Oodnadatta Track

Stilt water tank and desalination plant

The 600 km long Oodnadatta Track is one of the most famous outback routes that runs north from Marree along the Old Ghan Railway Line to end in Marla on the Stuart Highway. The track follows an ancient Australian Aboriginal trade route.

There are no paved sections on the Oodnadatta Track, and it is mostly impassable in the rainy season. The heat in the outback can be brutal and there may be no significant rainfall for many months or even years. On the other hand, real flash floods can suddenly occur, which are just as dangerous. Then the dried up creeks become torrential streams. Despite the destructive forces of nature, it is astonishing how much evidence of the history of the telegraph route and the Old Ghan railway line can still be found today. The outback along this path is full of the past in barren, red grassland. A very small glimpse of the hardship of the first explorers and settlers, which was characterized by scurvy and blindness, lack of water and heat, non-healing wounds and battles with Aborigines , imagine in this hostile environment - if you take some time for the journey.

So NS is going to have "heritage" locomotives, why not BNSF? They can start with something like this. Get 'er done BNSF!

In September 1964 while bumming around the CB&Q coach yard in Aurora, IL, I happened upon something unique, CB&Q Coach 6000 "Silver Pendulum" (first photo).

In rrpicturearchives.net I found these statements. Robert Bullerman wrote: "Unique pendular suspension 60 seat chair built in 1940 by the Pacific Railway Equipment Company. 1 of 3 such cars, 1 each owned by the Burlington Route, Great Northern, and Santa Fe." And Chuck Zeiler wrote: "A pendulum car truck is designed to support the car body 14 inches above the center of gravity and secure easy riding around curves at high speed". This is very different from say the Talgo Pendular cars in Oregon and Washington.

A little more research led me to this photo: searcharchives.vancouver.ca/uploads/r/null/9/2/923232/0c6...

And years ago I purchased a slide (see next photo), photographer unknown, taken January 1, 1955 in in St. Joseph, MO. of CB&Q Doodlebug 9767 (built by EMD-Pullman) pulling, unbelievably, Silver Pendulum. What an odd combination. Not exactly high-speed. The doodlebug like many of CB&Q's was recycled. It became the Beardstown Engineers Locker Room.

In Reiher.

How the saltwater crocodile was born (a legend from the dream time)

The natives of Bathurst Island, an island in northern Western Australia, in the Timor Sea, tell about the formation of the saltwater crocodile another dreamtime legend:

In this long and creative period, which many call the Dream time, lived on a freshwater lagoon Jirakuipai. He had married his two sisters Kuraruna and Jaknia. Jirakuipai was considered an outstanding expert in the production of spears. He mastered the art of making large spears for the men with many barbs on one side. And he was also able to make the handy little spears for women. They then had a double set of barbs.

He had just completed the production of a larger number of spears when a group of natives from the neighboring island of Melville Island stormed his camp and seriously injured him in the back with numerous spear wounds.

Jirakuipai was a strong man. He pulled the spears out of his body and threw them, as an act of retaliation, at the attackers. Then he saves himself by jumping into the water and diving away.

To escape capture, his two wives turned into two birds. In herons. Kuraruna became a night heron (Night Heron) and Jaknia a brown heron (Brown Heron). Such birds lived in large numbers in the mangrove swamps.

And the next morning, from a hiding place, Jirakuipai watches his enemies swam in the water full of arrogance. And while he was still thinking about revenge, he was suddenly no longer a man. He had turned into a crocodile. From the many wounds on his back became the back comb, his mouth changed to a long muzzle with sharp teeth and the whole bundle of spears in his lower back became a tail, at the far end of which one of his male spears, with the barbever only on one side, could be seen.

Legend does not report what Jirakuipai did to the enemies. But it is clear!
