Symphony of the Seas is an Oasis-class cruise ship owned and operated by Royal Caribbean International. She was built in 2018 in the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France, the fourth in Royal Caribbean's Oasis class of cruise ships. At 228,081 GT, she is the largest cruise ship in the world by gross tonnage, surpassing her sister ship Harmony of the Seas, also owned by Royal Caribbean International.

Symphony of the Seas measures 361.011 meters (1,184 ft 5.0 in) in length and has a gross tonnage of 228,081 across 18 decks. She is able to accommodate 5,518 passengers at double occupancy up to a maximum capacity of 6,680 passengers, as well as a 2,200-person crew. There are 16 decks for guest use, 22 restaurants, 4 pools, and 2,759 cabins.

Symphony of the Seas is about 30 meters (98 feet) longer than the largest military ships ever built, the U.S. Nimitz-class aircraft carriers.

Facilities include a children's water park, a full-size basketball court, an ice-skating rink, a zip line that is 10 decks high, a 1400-seat theater, an outdoor aquatic theater with Olympic-height platforms, and two 43-foot (13 m) rock-climbing walls. There is also a park containing over 20,000 tropical plants.

Symphony of the Seas is powered onboard by six marine-diesel sets each composed of three 16-cylinder Wärtsilä 16V46D common rail engines and three 12-cylinder Wärtsilä 12V46D engines.

The energy-efficient design of Symphony of the Seas enables it to accomplish shipboard power generation with 85 MW versus the 100 MW normally found on Oasis-class ships. One of the key design features is the use of only LED or fluorescent lights in order to avoid the heat generation from incandescent bulbs, thereby reducing the load on air conditioning systems.

Additional energy efficiency is accomplished by using a 2 MW steam turbine to recover waste heat from the engines and converting it into energy to power a portion of the onboard hotel load.

For propulsion, Symphony of the Seas uses three 20,000 kilowatt azipod main engines, which are electric thrusters. These engines are mounted under the stern of the ship and they each drive 20 foot wide rotatable propellers. In addition to the three main engines, there are four bow thrusters used for docking, each with 5,500 kilowatts of power or 7,380 horsepower.

Among the Oasis-class ships, Symphony of the Seas uses 25% less fuel due to the implementation of a new system that releases tiny air bubbles under the hull to enable the vessel to glide more smoothly through the water. The air layer also reduces excitation from the propellers, which cuts noise and vibration levels in the aft part of the ship.

Kickstart the New Year than with our Annual Winter Steam Gala. Taking place on the 23- 26 January, this action-packed four-day event will feature an intensive timetable for both passenger and goods trains as well as THREE special guest locomotives for you to enjoy!

What To Expect...

6880 Betton Grange🚂

Be part of history as we introduce the youngest steam engine in the country! The Great Western 'Grange' Class No. 6880, Betton Grange, completed just this year, will make its first appearance at our gala. This remarkable locomotive was funded and built by dedicated enthusiasts after none of the original 80 'Grange' locomotives survived the 1960s. The first ‘Grange’ rolled out in 1936, so this new addition bridges nearly 90 years of steam history!

6695 Collett Tank 🚂

Experience a piece of railway history at our Winter Steam Gala with the Great Western Railway Collett Tank No. 6695, visiting from the Swindon and Cricklade Railway. Designed by Charles Collett, this robust and versatile tank engine was crucial for suburban and shunting duties across the GWR network.

Dressed in its classic GWR green livery, No. 6695 represents the golden era of steam with its operational capability and distinctive elegance. Join us to witness this iconic locomotive in action, pulling our period coaches for a true steam experience.

3850 GWR Heavy Freight 🚂

Don't miss the powerful Great Western Railway Heavy Freight No. 3850 at our Winter Steam Gala, courtesy of the Gloucester and Warwickshire Railway. This formidable locomotive exemplifies the strength and durability essential for mid-20th century heavy freight services.

No. 3850 showcases the classic design of GWR's heavy freight engines, built to manage demanding loads across rugged terrains. Adorned in the traditional GWR livery, it stands as a testament to the industrial might of the era. Experience this giant in steam engineering as it demonstrates its hauling capabilities on our heritage track.

Intensive Passenger & Goods Timetable

Get ready for a dynamic timetable, running an array of both passenger and goods services throughout the event. Whether you're a dedicated rail enthusiast or just looking for an unforgettable experience, there will be something for everyone.

'Long and low' Northern Counties-bodied Volvo Olympian 16149 was unique in Stagecoach's South Wales fleet. New to Selkent in dual-door configuration, she lost her centre door upon transfer, and spent all her tenure at Cwmbran depot, where her 80-seat capacity came in useful for school and college contracts. However, she would frequently venture on to Tuesdays only Service X20 (Newport-Cwmbran-Pontypool-Abergavenny) and the Severnside network until it passed to Newport Transport in July 2014.

Withdrawn in July 2014, she quickly passed to Ensignbus, and then on DA Coaches of Coatbridge, re-registered MIG 9522.

I caught up with her on a Tuesday in Pontypool in November 2011 when she was operating the aforementioned X20, not long after a fresh repaint.

Following the re-introduction of front door boarding, the maximum capacity of buses has changed due to social distancing. Therefore, even though this bus normally has a maximum capacity of 57 and has 31 seats, it can now only carry 10 passengers. Metroline West ADL Enviro200 DEL2145 (LK65EAA) shows off the new features whilst out on the 331.

In September 2019 Go-Coach purchased three ex-London United Optare Tempos these being, YJ11 EHN, YJ11 EHR and YJ11 EHX and were numbered 7801, 7802 and 7803 in the fleet. They are almost exclusively used on high capacity school routes which can only accomodate single deck vehicles.

A unique opportunity presented us on Saturday 19th September 2020 when all three Optare Tempo's were at Otford so a lineup was arranged this being the first time since they were repainted that all three have been together! So from the left we have 7801 YJ11 EHN, 7802 YJ11 EHR and 7803 YJ11 EHX at Otford Vestry Road.

If you were to go back 11 years, Edwards Coaches were operating four Dennis Tridents on school contracts and on the UniHall contract for Cardiff University. Three carried Alexander ALX400 bodies and a single example was fitted with Plaxton President bodywork.

Their additional seating capacity also made them ideal for operation on Service 400E (Gwaun Miskin-Beddau-Llantwit Fardre-Church Village-Treforest Industrial Estate-Cardiff) on Saturdays in November and December, particularly if Wales was playing an International Match at home.

Y8 EDW was one of the ALX400s, having been new to London United in dual-door configuration as SN53 KJV. She was acquired by Edwards from Holmeswood Coaches in September 2013 and has been fitted with a set of dual-purpose seats.

This November 2014 shot of her was taken at the Upper Boat Roundabout when heading to Cardiff with a good load.

With it now 5 months since lockdown restrictions were implemented due to COVID-19, airlines are very slowly starting to see demand returning although this maybe scuppered in part due to spikes in cases being reported.

For Finnair, the carrier was supposed to be operating 7 daily or 49 weekly flights for the S20 schedule with 2 wide-body (one Airbus A350-900 in the morning and one Airbus A330-300 in the evening) and 5 narrow-body flights providing the work. That hasn't happened as capacity has significantly dropped with only 15 weekly flights being provided with Airbus A321s being utilised.

Prior to this, Airbus A330-300s became a common sight at London Heathrow following the W18 schedule whereby between 19th November 2018 to 23rd November 2018, Airbus A330-300s replaced Airbus A350-900s on Monday and Friday, and later from 30th November 2018 until 15th March 2019, Airbus A330-300s operated on Fridays only with Airbus A350-900s operating for the rest of the week on AY1331/1332.

For the S19 schedule, Airbus A330-300s got their own dedicated flight from 31st March 2019 when AY1337/1338 was converted from Airbus A320 family aircraft whilst AY1331/1332 retained Airbus A350-900s on all days although Airbus A330-300s would often substitute.

Now, Finnair is only providing a skeleton service between London Heathrow and Helsinki with only 15 weekly flights provided by Airbus A320 family aircraft, mainly Airbus A321s. The vast majority of their Airbus A330-300s are currently in storage at Helsinki whilst their Airbus A350-900s see work providing cargo and limited commercial flights on long-haul sectors.

Currently, Finnair have 8 Airbus A330s, all of which are Airbus A330-300s. So far, 7 out of 8 Airbus A330-300s are currently in short-term storage.

Lima Tango November is one of 8 Airbus A330-300s currently in Finnair fleet, delivered new to the flag-carrier on 24th April 2009, later leased from Novus Aviation Capital between March 2014 until March 2019 where her lease transferred from DVB Bank and she is powered by 2 General Electric CF6-80E1A4 engines. She has not operated a commercial flight since 11th March 2020 and is currently in storage at Helsinki-Vantaa.

Friendship is a Blessing

by Emily Mathews

Friendship is a blessing ––

it's the best you have to share,

The talents and the wisdom,

the capacity to care...

It's being there to lend support,

whatever needs arise,

It's making sure that others know

they're special in your eyes...

Friendship is a blessing,

and, to all who have a friend,

It's one of the most precious gifts

that life could ever send.
