New York City Police Department (NYPD) Vehicles

The vehicle shown in the image is a Toyota Camry used by the New York City Police Department (NYPD). It is one of several models, including sedans and hybrids, that the NYPD uses for its fleet. Many of these cars are assigned to specific divisions, such as the Traffic Division. The department's vehicle fleet is the largest in the U.S. and includes a number of alternative-fuel vehicles, such as hybrids and fully electric cars.

We owned the first and third generation Camry and skipped this model, but you can see it as an evolutionary link between the two and keeping up fairly well with contemporary trends. The square-edged styling of the first-generation is dropped here for a bit of curvature (though the rear opera window and general upright nature of the rear light remains) and the C-Pillar here lends good visibility to the driver, commendably thin and, well, frankly, boring. It matched up well in the Toyota lineup, as if the decree from on high was to make sure that everyone knew it was part of a family of cars. Build quality shows few corners cut, too: look how well the alignment and brightwork are done, even 20-25 years later.

Brought from New Brunswick, Canada.

I'd have said this was an Executive judging by the two-tone paintwork. Can't check on Cartell as it's another dodgy registration that actually belonged to a Corolla!

A company I worked for in the late '80s had one as a company car, I remember the chintzy interior and mock stitching well.

I'd happily own one myself nowadays!

Not many of these around anymore. Saying that, when you look out for them, there are a few!

Toyota Camry at Soviet Square

These light poles are pretty strong - hardly even scratched it.

I bought the camry with 30,060 miles from claremont toyota back in 11/04. as of wednesday(3/24/10) this was the mileage. Really thought I was gonna miss this shot. But I didn't...!! LOL. 1-2-3-4-5-6

"This custom-fabricated Camry features rear doors that were molded to the body, while the front doors were extended and made up to open suicide (reverse) style. The pillar post was moved back four inches. The center portion of the roof was taken away for a panoramic view. The trunk deck lid was molded and the door handles and mirrors were shaved. All of the bodywork and modifications were performed at Camino Real Collision Center in Pico Rivera, California."

The second generation, V20 series Camry went on sale during August 1986 in Japan. As with the previous series, there was again a parallel Vista model for the home market that Toyota released simultaneously. V20 Camry and Vista sedans continued with the four-door sedan configuration. For overseas markets, Toyota issued a station wagon for the first time. The Vista also launched with a four-door pillared hardtop sedan with unique body panels all-round in lieu of the liftback offered with the previous car—a body extended to the Camry in August 1988. To attain a sportier appearance with lower and wider proportions, Toyota reduced the height of the hardtop by 25 millimeters (1 in) over the sedan. Not intended for export, this hardtop body with few changes would later form the basis of the upscale but hastily conceived Lexus ES 250 sold in North America from 1989 through to 1991. Toyota rushed the ES 250 as a stopgap measure to flesh out the fledgling Lexus lineup so not to launch the flagship LS 400 as a stand-alone model.

Another viewing, I'm hoping this one will work out. It's done 79k miles and is in pretty good condition, currently owned by a local Toyota enthusiast. He doesn't use it much, in fact it was off the road all last year and I think he needs the money for other projects.

To get his registration plate off it'll need to be taxed and MoTed, so that gets it sufficiently sorted for me to hopefully buy off him.

Just after a wash

Only 1 previous owner. Not a car I recognise, maybe not local as it was parked outside some hotels/guesthouses, so it could be a visitor from out of town. That's one of the positives about living in a seaside town, from a car spotters point of view. A lot of people visiting the town sometimes come in interesting cars.
