At this time of year, the country is very hot and dry, leading to a great many bush fires. Earlier in the trip I had to abandon plans to visit one national park in search of Dipodium for the simple fact that the whole northern half was on fire. Here I was trying to take back roads south to Mallacoota from the eastern edge of Snowy River National Park but was turned around by road closures due to bush fires. The only detour available took me east well into New South Wales and then south to Mallacoota. Many hours wasted!
This is the Bush Compound. The family is not there. When the family is in, in addition to the US flag, they also fly a Texas and Main flay, in that order.

Through natural selection this bush has evolved a defense mechanism that most other bushes do not have. It has thorns on its branches which protect it from predators. Natural Selection does not cause the thorns to evolve. They are the product of random mutations with in the plant and many generations of growth.
