This ticket was used to speed up the boarding of OPO buses. They were also available on any route that travelled into the Havering Area: Route 193 from Barking; 370 from Upminster. There was a machine on the OPO bus to clip the ticket and a number stamped on the card. The number on the ticket indicated 1) the fare taken. 2) What stage the ticket had been cancelled. This number was rotated via the drivers ticket machine. On crew buses it was down to the conductor to clip the ticket with a hand held clipper, this had a single ID number. It was down to the Conductor to ascertain the journey from the passenger and take the right amount of clips from the card. I never did find out what happened if the card was over clipped.
To those of us of a 'certain age' the name Williamson of Ashton used to be seen on a regular basis - on the bottom edge of our bus tickets. The Ashton-Under-Lyne based printers had specialised in tickets for transport, entrance and, in the original meaning of the word for price tags, since been founded in 1835. For many years various corporation transport departments and private operators used Williamson's for ticket stock as well as the machines they branched out into. The latter included machines for enterainment venues such as cinemas and greyhound racing tracks. In many ways their output somewhat echoed the larger Bell Punch Company who had, in Victorian days, somewhat cornered the market for pre-printed tickets allied to a cancelling and totaliser punch machine and this catalogue contains Williamson's version of this that was possibly introduced after the Bell Punch patents lapsed?
In later years as well as the pre-printed tickets seen here, Willaimson's made ticket rolls to fit other types of hand held machines such as the Bell Punch Ultimate. Undated this catalagie has a feel of the pre-WW2 era and contains a couple of inset slips one of which is dated to 1937. The company was finally wound up in 1985.
Various items of ancilliary equipment for bus, coach, train and tramway operation were available. This also shows one of the various types of multi-part tickets that were available for use by motor coach operators; this would have allowed a stub to be retained by the booking clerk, one for the driver or conductor when boarding and one for retention by the passenger.
“Warm & Welcoming #Homestay :)”
Reviewed 3 April 2014
Such a lovely welcoming family, Joseph and Elizabeth are such genuine caring people who are interested in their visitors and enjoy sharing stories and information about Fort Kochi and the Kerala area. The Homestay itself was very clean and tidy, I stayed in a front room with a balcony which had air-con, ceiling fan and an en-suite and was very comfortable. The homestay is situated in a very convenient spot, walking distance to most of the main sites.
As a solo traveler I felt very at home and safe at Aroma and in Fort Kochi. Joseph and Elizabeth went out of their way to provide exceptional service with daily home cooked local meals (delicious) and organized a yoga lesson for me with a great local instructor and escorted me all the way to the door so I wouldn't get lost! :) There is also a very good and affordable Ayurveda massage place straight across the road.
I had a fantastic stay here and would highly recommend #Aroma #Homestay to anyone travelling to Kochi who is looking for that authentic warm and welcoming family homestay.

These colour pages show the variety of pre-printed, numbered tickets of various denominations that could be removed from a stapled bundle and 'clipped' or punched according to the stage boarded. Williamson's also printed waybills against which ticket sales and money tendered could be reconciled. Most names here are fictitious with one obvious 'real' name; the SHMD Trans and Buses being the neighbouring Joint Committee of the Stalybridge, Mossley, Hyde & Dukinfield transport and electricity undertaking. The Lees & Stanhope ticket also borrows stage points from neighbouring Oldham Corporation routes!

Issued on the last day of operation of Barrow-in-Furness Corporation Transport ..... all these tickets had the same serial number (!) and were given to passengers at no cost along with their normal ticket.

Full set of all Barrow-in-Furness Corporation decimal issue 'Ultimate' bus tickets.
6-roll Ultimate ticket machines were introduced in Barrow circa 1961 and eventually replaced by Wayfarers in December 1985.
Note the 2p Concessionary ticket, the introduction of which must have reduced the Ultimate machines' usefulness by about a sixth !
Note also two different print runs for 5p, 12p and 30p. I am not certain which of each value came first.
The 38p issue is the highest value Ultimate ticket I have ever seen ... if you know of a higher value I would love to know about it.

Return fare system available to workmen compulsary rehoused in newly built estate on the fringe of the City where a feeder bus service was provided to link with the 'main line' tram services, thus allowing them to travel at the (lower) tram fares.
Reading left to right:
(Nm3480) issued from the Estate to the connecting tram stop.
(Zm3279) issued on board the tram in exchange for the first ticket.
(Vm7280) issued on board the returning tram in exchange for the second ticket.
(On5202) issued on the final bus journey to the estate in exchange for the third ticket.
The first three tickets were retained by the respective conductors on the second, third and fourth journeys to be paid in as cash.
Confusing? Maybe it is at first but it was certainly effective!
Wall-e and I took our first ride on the bus in Halifax today. We didn't miss our stop, and recognized some landmarks on our way downtown, which made things a lot less stressful. Not bad for only living in this city for a week and a half!
