Last night I went to sleep and could see grass. This morning...winter happened!
While I was walking through the woods (and while taking this) the snow kept falling in HUGE clumps off the tree tops. Every so often you could just look out into the forest and see these bombs of white snow crash through the branches. Thankfully I only found myself in the middle of two.....

These are thick, layered bundles of paper. each layer is a picture, drawing, collage or interesting piece of paper, but they are layered up ridiculously thick so there are hundreds of unviewable pieces all on top of each other, like a book you cannot open. Secret layers that make up a whole, just like a person. notes, pieces of wire, moths, leather bindings from books, scraps of lace I found in a skip, paper from my childhood or ruined books or sealing wax and wooden blocks. 42 were made in total, and most were datestamped. all are exactly 2 inches by 3 inches, some are very thick, some not so.

I wonder what this bundle of trees will be like in 10 or 20 years, assuming it is left alone. Will the small trees fuse into a single large one? Or will they just choke each other out?

Ema (絵馬) are small wooden plaques on which Shinto worshippers write their prayers or wishes. The ema are then left hanging up at the shrine, where the kami (spirits or gods) receive them. They bear various pictures, often of animals or other Shinto imagery, and many have the word gan'i (願意), meaning "wish", written along the side. In ancient times people would donate horses to the shrines for good favor; over time this was transferred to a wooden plaque with a picture of a horse, and later still to the various wooden plaques sold today for the same purpose.
Ema are sold for various wishes. Common reasons for buying a plaque are for success in work or on exams, marital bliss, to have children, and health. Some shrines specialize in certain types of these plaques, and the larger shrines may offer more than one. Sales of ema help support the shrine financially.
