Last night I went to sleep and could see grass. This morning...winter happened!
While I was walking through the woods (and while taking this) the snow kept falling in HUGE clumps off the tree tops. Every so often you could just look out into the forest and see these bombs of white snow crash through the branches. Thankfully I only found myself in the middle of two.....
I wonder what this bundle of trees will be like in 10 or 20 years, assuming it is left alone. Will the small trees fuse into a single large one? Or will they just choke each other out?

Lake Memphremagog which skirts Newport, VT and Magog, Quebec is certainly known for its cold winds and freezing temperatures in the winter. CP Rail's line to Richford and Farnham begins at Newport having many twists and curves departing town climbing it's way to the top at Vance Hill. The wind chill was about -10 this March 1993 day as MLW RS-18's 1856-1801 lead a heavy train for the HK Webster mill in Richford, VT. Once the train cleared the cautionary limits in Newport, it was a flat out white knuckle chase to Richford with track speeds around 40 mph.
These bundles of dried lavender were outside a florists in Amsterdam, near a market square. I was on a valentines day treat with my partner.

Ema (絵馬) are small wooden plaques on which Shinto worshippers write their prayers or wishes. The ema are then left hanging up at the shrine, where the kami (spirits or gods) receive them. They bear various pictures, often of animals or other Shinto imagery, and many have the word gan'i (願意), meaning "wish", written along the side. In ancient times people would donate horses to the shrines for good favor; over time this was transferred to a wooden plaque with a picture of a horse, and later still to the various wooden plaques sold today for the same purpose.
Ema are sold for various wishes. Common reasons for buying a plaque are for success in work or on exams, marital bliss, to have children, and health. Some shrines specialize in certain types of these plaques, and the larger shrines may offer more than one. Sales of ema help support the shrine financially.

White sage (Salvia apiana) has been used by Natives for many moons to clear impurities and bad spirits from the air of new homes. A wonderful reminder of the arid Eastern Sierra.
I received this gift when moving to a new home in the East Bay. I love its soft, pubescent foliage, stems and can't bear to burn it!
