I spotted this big guy from my bike. I stopped to get a few shots and had taken off my camera backpack and laid it in the grass beside the trail. After a few minutes I put my pack back on and started feeling something biting me. I then realized there were ants all over me. Turns out that I had put my backpack down in a fire ant nest. After 40+ bites to my body I can safely say that I learned my lesson. I am feeling better today and most bites have already started to get better. My right arm was the worst and got pretty swollen a few hours after the episode.
She had been living in our pond for over two years. All the other frogs and toads started disappearing. Also, baby fish. She grew huge! We caught her and found her a new home a few months ago. We are already seeing tiny toads and baby fish.
I blinked first. He never did blink.

American Bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus).
Prey motion elicits feeding behavior. First, if necessary, the frog performs a single, orienting bodily rotation ending with the frog aimed towards the prey, followed by approaching leaps, if necessary. Once within striking distance, the bullfrog begins its feeding strike, which consists of a ballistic lunge (eyes closed as during all leaps) that ends with the mouth opening. At this stage, the fleshy, mucous-coated tongue is extended towards the prey, often engulfing it, while the jaws continue their forward travel to close (bite) just as the tongue is retracted. Large prey that do not fit entirely into the mouth are stuffed in with the hands.

and an adult pool frog (in the foreground, left) for size comparison. Bull frogs are non-native to the Upper Rhine valley (they come from Northern America). They reproduce extremely successfully and endanger domestic amphibians.
This bullfrog was giving off so many laid-back vibes that I almost nodded off myself while working a focus-stack on him. Photographed in one of the marshy ponds along the Chad Erickson Memorial Park Trail, La Crosse, Wisconsin.
