View of Ali Qapu Palace at dawn, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, standing on the western side of Naqsh-e Jahan Square, in Isfahan, Isfahan province of Iran.

Built at the very end of the 16th century as a residence for Shah Abbas I, this six-storey palace also served as a monumental gateway to the royal palaces that lay in the parklands beyond (Ali Qapu means ‘Gate of Ali’). Named after Abbas’ hero, the Imam Ali, it was built to make an impression, and at six storeys and 38m tall, with its impressive elevated terrace featuring 18 slender columns, it dominates one side of Naqsh-e Jahan (Imam) Square.

This sweeping, purpose-built structure on the Keele University campus is home to one of the most highly ranked medical schools in the United Kingdom — and bears the name of one of Britain's most distinguished physicians.

The Man Behind the Name

Sir David John Weatherall (9 March 1933 — 8 December 2018) was a British physician and researcher in molecular genetics, haematology, pathology and clinical medicine. After finishing medical school, David joined the Army for two years and was sent to Singapore, where he treated a young girl with the serious blood disease thalassaemia — an experience that sparked a lifelong dedication to researching the condition. He later became Regius Professor of Medicine at Oxford — one of the most prestigious academic chairs in Britain — and founded the Institute of Molecular Medicine, which was renamed the Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine upon his retirement in 2000.

In 2010 he was awarded the Lasker Award, the most significant US prize for medical research, being the only person outside America to receive it that year. He was knighted in 1987 and appointed Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire for his services to medicine in the 2017 Birthday Honours.

His Connection to Keele

Sir David joined Keele in 2002 as Chancellor and was invaluable in helping set up the new School of Medicine, particularly in recognising the importance of developing Primary Care research. In 2012, Keele University named this Medical School building in his honour.

The School Itself

Keele was awarded an undergraduate medical school in 2001 in partnership with Manchester University, with its own medical school finally opening in 2007 and the first cohort graduating in 2012. The school is ranked among the very best in the UK, placing ahead of several American Ivy League universities in global rankings. The building houses modern, purpose-built facilities including lecture theatres, seminar rooms, a first-class anatomy suite, multi-user laboratories and a fully equipped paramedic training ambulance.

Bonus Info

Keele University is one of the highest universities above sea level in the country (along with Bath). If you travel due east, you will not encounter higher ground until you reach the Ural Mountains in Russia.

The living proof of Vladimir's former greatness is the unique monument of antiquity - the Golden Gate. The gate was built in 1164 during the reign of Alexander Bogolyubsky In the old days, when the city was surrounded by thick walls and the Gate served as the main entrance to the city, a kind of Arc de Triomphe of the capital. It was from there that foreign ambassadors and distinguished guests entered the city, the warriors returned from military campaigns.

There, the people met the future Grand Princes, Alexander Nevsky and Dmitry Donskoy. The Golden Gate was built of white stone; its heavy oak sections were covered with gilded copper sheets.

The Bai Harir ni Vav is located 15 km from the center of Ahmedabad city. This stepwell was built in 1499 under the supervision of Sultan Begada’s harem. It has steps down through five levels of carved stone columns leading to two small wells, which are now often dry. The depths are cool even on the hottest day, making it a fascinating and eerie place. Overflow channels at the top serve as a reminder of the times when water tables were much higher than today. Behind the stepwell, the 16th-century Dai Halima Mosque contains the mausoleum of a royal midwife, Halima, with elegant jali screens. This monument, off the beaten track, is one of the most soothing locations in the city. Persian and Sanskrit inscriptions on the walls tell the legends of the monument. According to the legend, Dhai Harir (also known as Bai Harir Sultani), a household lady of Mahmud Begada, commissioned this stepwell. She built a mosque alongside a small tomb, in which she was buried.

All visitors of Burano remain intrigued by the many colours and the colorful houses that are reflected into the green waters of channels, by the leaning bell tower, by the tranquility and the calmness with which the elderly ladies embroider original Burano lace by their tombolo (or lace pillow), while they are laughing and chatting in squares among them. It seems to be in paradise.

Palazzo Mezzanotte was built in 1932 to centralise all the market trading places which were spread allover Milan. The new Stock Exchange building fits in a complex urban project planned by the Architect Paolo Mezzanotte. It became an architectural symbol of Fascism. The original structure still maintains its impressive façade of 36 meters. The travertine blocks are combined with allegoric figures symbolising wealth and abundance designed by Leone Lodi e Gemignano Cibau. The sides of the building are adorned with a series of bricks and travertine blocks and an inscription plaque of marble stands out. It represents the Roman Ruins which were discovered during the excavation phase. The final result was a triumph of rationalism which also encompasses classical elements.

At the intersection of legend, tradition, and history stands the Basilica di Sant'Eustorgio. The foundation of this 4th century basilica is built upon the spot where, according to tradition, the apostle Barnabas baptized the first Christians in Milan. Eustorgio I, the city bishop from 344 AD, had the church built to house the relics of the Three Kings; legend has it that the animals pulling the cart of relics reached the spot and refused to continue. It may also coincide with a cemetery of early Christians martyred prior to the Edict of Milan. Whatever lies beneath it, today the church is filled with works by Lombard artists from the 13th to the 15th centuries. The main attraction, however, is the Cappella Portinari next door, built in the mid-1400s, and the earliest true Renaissance work in the city. It is a striking combination of classical forms and typical Lombard fresco decoration, and houses the intricate Ark of St Peter Martyr.

В XII в.

Sivasubramania Swami Kovil

A tower made up of intricate carvings of small statues rises high a height of about 80 feet and looms over you as if to protect the sacred temple underneath This Hindu temple is known as the Arulmihu Sivasubramania Swami Kovil. This temple has a long history of about 125 years and was built to worship Lord Muruga, otherwise known as God Kataragama. This is of great importance to the Hindu people as well as the Buddhist people who are found travelling in great numbers to devoutly worship at the shrine of Kataragama on the south of the island.

The most outstanding sight is the tower known as raja gopuram. This tower was built in 1994 fully embellished with colourful statues of Hindu deities. It is also accompanied by two smaller towers and a clock house.

The construction of this tower was followed by a celebration called Kumbabishekam which is a traditional ceremony that is held after rehabilitation or a reconstruction of a temple.

Remains of scheduled monument in the Torre district of Torquay.

Probably 14c.

From Historic England website:

The monument includes the medieval St Michael's Chapel, a rectangular stone- built structure considered to be of 14th century date. The chapel is situated on the summit of Chapel Hill, on the edge of a steep sided limestone cliff which may be a former quarry face. The location is a commanding one with extensive views over Torbay. The chapel, which is a Grade II Listed Building, survives as a standing building built of limestone rubble with contrasting red sandstone quoins, and entrance and window dressings also of sandstone; the roof is of local stone slate carried on a barrel vault. A large Bathstone cross of mid-19th century date surmounts the east gable end. The chapel is orientated east-west and consists of a single aisleless cell with external dimensions of 11.2m east- west by 6.6m north-south and with walls 1.2m thick. It has a single arched entrance 1.4m wide in the south wall fronted by the remains of a later stone porch; the entrance is barred by a modern iron grill. The floor of the chapel is provided by the unhewn rock upon which the building stands; this rock floor, which rises from west to east, shows considerable signs of wear close to the entrance indicating many years of use and suggesting also that the rock had never been sealed by an artificial floor covering. Internal features include traces of original wall plaster, a niche in the south wall which may have been a piscina, and opposing windows in the north and south walls. The north facing window has been blocked whilst the south facing window has been partly blocked. Two further small windows on contrasting levels are set into the west wall. The chapel may have belonged to the Premonstratensian house of Torre Abbey which was founded in 1196 and which lies about 1.5km to the south although direct supporting evidence for its connection with Torre Abbey only exists for the post-medieval period. The exposed rock floor within the building has been taken to suggest that the chapel may mark the site of a religious vision. The site is shown as St Marie's Chapel on the 16th century map of Devon produced by John Speed and an earlier dedication of the chapel to St Mary survives in 17th century records, suggesting that the dedication to St Michael is of more recent origin. The post-medieval boundary walls to the north and south of the chapel, where these lie within the monument's 2m margin of protection, and the stone access steps on the north east exterior corner of the chapel, which also lie within the 2m margin of protection, and the iron grill across the entrance to the chapel, are excluded from the scheduling, although the ground beneath these features or to which they are attached is included.
