built 1840s, 1890s

Richmond, Virginia

37º32'40" N, 77º27'7" W

(These buildings were demolished May 2018.)

Although these buildings are within the Oregon Hill Historic District, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, they are currently threatened with demolition. In response, residents of the Oregon Hill community and others have mounted a defense of the buildings, urging that any development on that site incorportate the old buildings rather than raze them. A petition at change.org is titled "No805W—Save Oregon Hill Historic Buildings".

Historic Richmond identifies five structures:

801 W. Cary St. 1890s semi-detached brick Victorian Italianate pharmacy

803 W. Cary St. 1840s semi-detached gable-roofed commercial/residential building

805 W. Cary St. 1890s semi-detached brick Colonial Revival dwelling

807 W. Cary St. 1840s semi-detached gable-roofed brick dwelling on raised basement

June 10, 2021 - Demolition of the Lazarus (Macy's) Department Store which was built in 1970. Located at 3180 Kingsdale Center, Upper Arlington, Ohio.

"The Lazarus Department Store was founded in downtown Columbus in 1851. This structure is a good example of the suburban Lazarus store design of the mid-20th century. The entrance is emphasized by three ground-to-roof bays of pebble-embedded rock defined by New Formalism style white pilasters and arches. Designed using the same glazed multi-colored blue bricks as the Lazarus Eastland and Northland stores, these materials were selected “not only for their handsome color and sparkle, but for their durability and quality of never needing cleaning.” The design was influenced by Raymond Loewy, considered the father of industrial design, who had a decades-long working relationship with Robert Lazarus." Previous text from the following website: www.columbuslandmarks.org/former-lazarus-kingsdale/

The Broadway Corridor, which encompasses the downtown Portland U.S. Postal Service site, is a key opportunity site for high-density employment, mixed-income housing, and signature city attractions and amenities. This project will connect the Old Town/Chinatown and Pearl District neighborhoods, with the goal to maximize community benefits, particularly to those groups that haven’t benefitted from other urban projects.

The old stucco covered building fell into disuse a number of years ago. I passed it just a few days ago. While shopping this past Sunday I noticed that it was no more. Demolished completely, I'd say. Shot with my Sony DSC-RX100 in the Standard Panorama mode. I cropped it a bit on the right. Note, a breeze caused the caution/cuidado yellow tape to move a lot. It's sliced and diced condition is an artifact of automatic pans.

Does anyone know when this building was constructed or what bank occupied it? Please comment if you know.
