Continuing on with the exploration of complex new software ( "Affinity for Mac" ) that I recently purchased, incorporating two major new elements into my work - Layers and Text.
The inclusion of text for me in Art pieces was for a long time something of an anathema. I hated seeing it done and rejected doing in my own paintings as it shackled the abstract work to the ground, so to speak, to the everyday, mundane world of human talk.
Then came a long a patron who challenged me to give him my abstract painting style ALONG WITH incorporated text. I have a penchant for accepting all challenges and even though it was tough for me at first I soon learned to see the words and letters as just more formal or graphic elements in the total image. It opened up my artistic world by getting me to step out of my comfort zone.
When I presented said Mr. Taylor with the finished canvas, he immediately ordered a second one to hang next to it as a diptych. 3 more text-based pieces followed, all for the same patron.
For this image and the previous one, "Time and Time, Again" I wrote the text in the process of creating the image. I looked at the image, composited of a shot of the rubble of a building demolition and one of amaryllis growing in a greenhouse in January, and let the words come to me.
What came forward seems to say something about our current times when there's a tremendous threat of the demolition of much of what we once felt was safe and secure - things like freedom of thought and expression, freedom of assembly, freedom from hate and systemic persecution, freedom from the forces of ignorance.
Our current world view is dying. It has to. It quite clearly no longer serves us. Yet, out of every death comes some form of life, new life and perhaps a life that surprises us. And as surprising as it may be it will be something we did not expect. That's the beauty of it.
I learned recently, reading Rupert Sheldrake, that when cells die they produce a substance that enables new cells to be born. Without that substance new life can't come forth. If our old "world" is dying then there's some cause for joy - something new and unforeseen will be born out of it. So my message here is one of Hope in Dark Times.

After doing some research, using Google’s Street View Maps, I’ve determined that the structure being knocked down is the PowerCo Federal Credit Union. It’s near the eastern end of the East Lake Shopping Center on Roswell Road (GA Hwy. 120)
Although it looks like a panorama, it’s not. It’s a 24mm wide- angle photo made with my minuscule Sony DSC-WX220. The top and bottom edges were cropped out.

I used a different Prisma filter on this shot at their lower resolution. This really serves more as an experiment than anything else.

Still far from finished gutting this old building, but at least you can see the floor now.

It was interesting watching these few building come down this summer. The work took a while a to get underway and more than a few days to complete. this allowed me to watch (& campture) different parts of the process on the way to work each morning.

The small, gray building in front of the excavator was my Curious Buildings subject back in September 2020, when, ominously, a commenter predicted this building's short future. Now, one week after I took this photo, the gray building is a pile of rubble, and the blue one will follow in the next few days. Curiously, someone painted over the gray building's barely legible Autosports sign before laying waste to the structure.
She'll be running the Skid-Steer, smashing stuff, and an expert on salvage operations in no time.

Before Kixmiller Construction can convert this old dilapidated building into a newly refurbished storage building facility, Big Gunn Demolition has got to remove all the old machinery, plumbing, electrical, and HVAC.

When a scaffolding mishap causes a few men to take a tumble and wind up entangled in a pile of debris, workers try to dig them out on their own, but soon realize they're in over their head.
They agree to call 911, but insist she avoid terms like collapse, emergency, and trapped.

After a minor incident involving a scaffolding collapse, three workers wind up in a pile of rubble during a demolition job.
There not so much trapped, but just entangled in the mess, and it looks like only bumps and bruises so far... Hallelujah!

So, the new federal carbon tax was implemented today, I was hoping it was going to be an April Fool's joke but apparently not. Right now it seems to have raised gas prices by about 5 cents per litre in Ontario and we can expect that expense to more than double in a few years over the life of its implementation. We will see how the tax affects the costs to heat our homes and how over the long term it also increases the already rapidly rising costs of everyday goods such as groceries and clothing. One thing is for sure, everyone is definitely going to less spending power with these new taxes, the coming October federal election cannot come soon enough.
So apparently the manufacturing of cement accounts for 8% of the world's CO2 emissions, 900 kg of CO2 are emitted for the fabrication of every ton of cement, yet this a topic that never seems to come up when talking about climate change. There is also the issue of concrete demolition which releases harmful dusts into the air, not to mention that some concrete was also created with asbestos embedded into the mixture. Everyone is so environmentally conscious but when it comes to ripping down buildings they don't even think twice.
So my question is, why does this 11 storey office tower need to torn down in the first place, could it not be repurposed into the new development?
As I was setting up my camera to take this photo a guy walked passed me, he didn't see me so I watched him to see what he was doing. He went inside the shell of the building and a few minutes later I could hear the sound of a grinder, he was one of the many copper thieves I have encountered while visiting these places. He was not at all aware of my presence even when standing only feet away from him, he was working just behind the pile of rubble that I was standing on while taking this photo.

An aerial view of a temporary layout looking into the warehouse used in the demolition job set-up. This is actually a 1:87 scale Walthers Cornerstone rail car shop. I added some details, and changed a few things around. Although I normally don't use figures, I did for a few of these shots.... it's easy to hide the bases or stand them up amidst the1:64 scale junk.

This Backhoe Loader, after an illustrious military career, is showing it's stuff for Big Gunn Salvage & Demolition now.
Developed specially for the US Army for deployment in Iraq and Afghanistan, the HMEE can support fast moving, long range operations without the need of a trailer.
The HMEE has a wide array of attachments and the vehicle can be fitted with an armored cab, which provides protection against small arms fire, artillery shell splinters, landmines and IEDs.

Big Gunn Salvage & Demolition is getting an early start in hopes of stripping out all the old pipe, conduit and duct work before they run out of daylight. When they do stop to take a break, that creeper makes a decent lounge chair.
I sure hope they're taking all the proper safety precautions...

This is a cropped, edited and converted to an RNI Films simulation of my original b+w image of this photo. I actually like this version a lot. The film simulation dates it further in the past than it originally was, but in time it won’t mean as much.
LEGO Design Building 19-02 one week after the demolition began.
For everyone who ever asked me to take a picture of the inside of the Design Buildings! Taken 10 minutes ago this is LEGO Design building 19-02 coming down.
Until six months ago this building housed the LEGO IT servers and our back-up generator and most importantly the rubble in the foreground was the LEGO deleted element storage with parts that dated back to the early 1980's packed carefully away in hudreds of cardboard boxes with dozens of bags of elements in each one. Now it's being torn down to make way for a new canteen and office block. Don't worry - the elements are safe in their new home!
(This is the last time I'll add a picture of this to the LEGO removable panel group - it's just funny to subvert the groups purpose so much!)
