Caterpillar CAT 226B Skid Steer Loader - Building Demolition - PHSH - Abandoned Hospital (Presidio, San Francisco)
A skid steer do not have a driving wheel and orientable wheels like cars. In order to turn (i.e. steer), the driver uses levers to change the rotation speed of the two wheels on one side vs the other side, causing it to skid. By having the wheels on one side turning in one direction and the other side in the other direction, a skid steer can turn on the spot. Skid steers use the same technique as tanks or crawlers excavators, except that they use wheels rather than tracks. This technique allows for a much simpler and more robust drive train and increase maneuverability, but does not allow driving it at high speed and it only works well when the front and back wheels are close, i.e. on very short wheels base vehicles.

Lots of rubble, debris or whatever you’d like to call it, spilling out of what was left of the old library earlier this month. This shot was filtered and cropped using Snapseed. Made it with my Panasonic DMC-LX100.
I used my Sony’s Partial Yellow Filter to bring out the main subject of this shot. Our old library is largely demolished now. The “cruncher” on this machine has replaced the more common shovel. Makes for amazingly short work knocking down structures.

Bobcat Skid Steer Loader - Building Demolition

June 10, 2021 - Demolition of the Lazarus (Macy's) Department Store which was built in 1970. Located at 3180 Kingsdale Center, Upper Arlington, Ohio.
"The Lazarus Department Store was founded in downtown Columbus in 1851. This structure is a good example of the suburban Lazarus store design of the mid-20th century. The entrance is emphasized by three ground-to-roof bays of pebble-embedded rock defined by New Formalism style white pilasters and arches. Designed using the same glazed multi-colored blue bricks as the Lazarus Eastland and Northland stores, these materials were selected “not only for their handsome color and sparkle, but for their durability and quality of never needing cleaning.” The design was influenced by Raymond Loewy, considered the father of industrial design, who had a decades-long working relationship with Robert Lazarus." Warren Hall, a 13 story building on the Cal State East Bay campus in Hayward, California, was imploded on Saturday August 17 2013, it was built in 1970 but has sat empty for the last 2 years after being deemed seismically unsafe by modern earthquake standards. It was located at the top of a ridge just uphill from the Hayward Fault, a major fault in the East Bay Area. Geologists placed ground sensors all around the area to study the effects of the blast, which they estimate would be similar to a 2.5 quake.
