Returning from fishing, a manu o ku serves up a breakfast of colorful, translucent larval fish to its nestling. The manu o KÅ«, bird of the war god KÅ«, catches fish and squid, often alternating heads and tails after multiple sequential captures. Manu o KÅ« is also known throughout the tropics as the white tern (Gygis alba). They are arboreal nesting seabirds, though no nest is actually constructed. These terns lay a single egg in a hollow or forked branch of a tree to incubate and raise a chick. Strong sharp claws and reduced webbing on their feet facilitate clutching the bare branch.

A weekend in France is perfect to relax. That's my excuse to go, at least :). The weekend of October 24th I headed to the region north of Strasbourg, to make some photos of the Eurocity trains that were running their last kilometers.

I first stopped in Wilwisheim, also home to an awesome bakery, to eat breakfast and wait for what was going to come. Among the many trains I saw before the Eurocity was this Europorte train, in soft autumn light.

To see the photo of the Eurocity, go to my blog and scroll down ;).

Notice, in the back, the new high speed line, which was the final reason to stop running the Belgium - Switzerland Eurocity services.

A street vendor selling various fish and chicken balls, tofu squares and chicken sausages, all served with various sweet and spicy sauces in the fishing village of Hua Thanon on Koh Samui. Also pictured on the left is various pastries and sticky rice with a shredded coconut topping.

This was my view having a cup of tea and a cereal bar at breakfast on Hitter Hill.

I made the visit here on an early morning Peak District recce. It was great to take in the sight of Chrome and Parkhouse Hills, a vista I have looked forward to viewing, having seen many a picture of them. The view is every bit as good as I expected. Sadly it was clear blue skies at this time and the location does lack any foreground interest, but that is more than compensated with the sight of these two "limestone reef" crags rearing up from the surrounding countryside. I will definitely return to capture this sight in better photographic conditions.

I went out this morning to put out the food for the birds. Came back in and washed my hands. Saw 10 Starlings arrive.

Looked down and then up and there was this Sparrowhawk with its breakfast of Starling. I hadn't even made my first cup of tea! Had it been lurking in our Portuguese laurel while I watered the runner beans and put out the bird food or had it just swooped through on the off chance?

Have to go back to calling our garden "The Raptor Restaurant".

An early misty morning walk

The Mexican Sage draws not only the Spinebill to our garden. The big and heavy Red Wattlebird has broken several stems but they wouldn't be wasted...

A good helping of brown sauce spices up the breakfast nicely.

I was so happy to see the sun shining this morning after experiencing so many days of fog here in Morro Bay. I went with my camera to the Marina to look for hunting Terns. Yes! It was a joy to observe and photograph them. Much to my surprise, I discovered a few adults that were still feeding their little ones.

This snowy egret would stick its beak under the water and jiggle it, creating ripples. Curious fish swim by and become breakfast. Its a small fish, but this guy seemed to have a pretty good hit rate, so I'm sure it got its fill.

Gotta love a hubby who makes Sunday breakfast:)

Last time I saw the Barn Owl on this visit as he flies back to his nest with a freshly caught vole/mouse after a mornings hunting.

Since we moved I have wanted to catch a train on the Churnet Valley Railway. Lockdown caused them to close and they have only recently reopened. Luckily this is close to home and on one of my dog walking routes.

Even though they only travel at 20mph I had little time to catch the shot. Lots to learn but hopefully with a more regular service I can improve.
