Die knapp 5 km südlich Freibergs gelegene Kleinstadt Brand-Erbisdorf zeigt mit ihrem Namen eine Doppelsiedlung an, die erst 1912 durch Vereinigung des ehemaligen Waldhufendorfs Erbisdorf mit der Bergmannssiedlung Brand. Das erstmals zum Jahr 1209 in Schriftquellen belegbare Erbisdorf, welches seinen Namen offenbar nach einem Lokator namens Erlwein erhielt, ist der ältere Ortsteil. Demgegenüber entstand der Ortsteil Brand mit dem Aufschwung des Silbererzbergbaus im südlichen Teil des Freiberger Reviers im Bereich einer Brand genannten Anhöhe, auf der intensiv Bergbau betrieben wurde. Die Bergarbeitersiedlung erhielt unter Herzog Georg dem Bärtigen im Jahr 1515 gewisse Rechte wie das Bierbrauen oder das Ausüben von Handwerken. Ein Jahrhundert später (1620) erlangte man sogar das Recht einen Wochenmarkt abzuhalten. Allerdings besaß Brand keine eigene Feldflur und auch kirchlich blieb die Siedlung dem benachbarten Erbisdorf zugeteilt.
Die nach der Vereinigung von Brand und Erbisdorf zur Stadtkirche aufgestiegene Erbisdorfer Kirche bewahrte ihren bereits im Mittelalter errichteten massiven Westturm. Im Kirchenschiff und 3/8-Chorabschluss erkennt man ebenfalls noch gotische Fenster. Im Inneren des mehrfach umgestalteten Kirchenbaus ist ein zinnernes Taufbecken aus dem Jahr 1516 bemerkenswert, welches aus der Dorfkirche im benachbarten St. Michaelis stammt. Die Orgel wurde 1770-74 von Adam Gottfried Oehme eingebaut.
Das 1834 mit Stadtrecht versehene Brand besitzt wenige auffällige Baudenkmale. Am Markt ist lediglich das ehemalige Erbgericht „Brander Hof“ hervorzuheben, welches Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts in frühklassizistischer Formensprache entstanden ist. Insbesondere südlich an den Markrplatz anschließend zeigt der Grundriss die unregelmäßige Struktur einer spätmittelalterlichen Bergmannssiedlung. Überprägt wurde die Stadtgestalt jedoch durch die starke Ansiedlung von Industrie an der Wende vom 19. zum 20. Jahrhundert. Damals versuchte man auf diesem Wege eine Alternative für den auslaufenden Bergbau zu schaffen, wobei Brand-Erbisdorf damals sogar zahlenmäßig die Produktionskapazität des benachbarten Freibergs übetraf!

It's Pioneer weekend here in Utah and a which is an official holiday celebrated on July 24. The holiday commemorates the arrival of Brigham Young and the first group of Mormon pioneers into the Salt Lake Valley on July 24, 1847. Parades, fireworks, rodeos, pioneer reenactments and other festivities help commemorate the event. Similar to Independence Day most governmental offices and many businesses are closed on Pioneer Day.

I received a brand new set of Ottos today. Due to a billing error, I lost a couple carts, but today, WM dropped off four brand new Ottos as a replacement. Really nice carts, and I'm happy to actually have a uniformed set of carts after so many years. I will definitely miss the old Turn Key. RIP Turn Key 800300 - you have serviced Arcadia well for 30+ years - and Rehrig 000031.
