A young boxer is training in the Rafael Trejo Gimnasio, the oldest boxing school on the island. Cuba has dominated international amateur boxing for decades, taking home more gold medals than any other country.
Action is kind of rare in Cuba. It is only at night in the dance clubs that the Cubans really get into gear. I was thrilled with the dynamics of the boxing school I visited and wanted to photograph the action.
I underexposed one full stop and used a TTL flash which I slightly overexposed for the correct exposure of the subject. TTL means that light is measured "Through The Lens". The advantage of this set up is that the flash will freeze the action against a relatively dark (- 1,0 ev) background, drawing more attention to the subject. A wide angle lens is essential because the flash needs to be close to the subject and away from the background (it shouldn't expose any of the background).
To further enhance the sense of action, I also zoomed out while I was
releasing the shutter. This only works in combination with a low shutter
speed, low enough to create a motion blur but high enough to avoid camera
shake. I synced my flash with the second or rear curtain, meaning the flash
will fire just before the second curtain closes. This creates the effect of
motion blur trailing the action.

An action packed show full of some of Britain’s top fighters was set to unfold on Saturday 16th July. Myself; Kailem Sims; of Boxing Media UK sat ringside at the Cardiff Ice Arena and watched carefully at a barrage of exciting bouts which took place in a packed arena at Cardiff Bay.
Clydach Vale’s very own Liam ‘Dully’ Williams headlined the show against his bitter domestic rival Gary Corcoran in the first defence of his British and Commonwealth Super-Welterweight Titles.
Pound-for-Pound megastar Guillermo Rigondeaux came to the UK to fight on our shores for the first time as he took on Liverpool’s James ‘Jazza’ Dickens for the WBA Super-Bantamweight World Championship.
We also got to see Manchester Lightweight hotshot Terry ‘Turbo’ Flanagan come up against the veteran 135 pounder Mzonke Fana. A wide selection of boxing matches which did not let us down
Dawn (Wild One_) and I took a drive last week to try and find some hares to photograph. As luck would have it we saw some in a distance field but no way of getting near. A very nice lady saw us looking and kindly let us park in her driveway and allowed us to walk along the edge of her field to see if we could get some photos. We ended up in a small woodland looking out to the field but there was not a hare to be seen but as we walked back a hare ran across the field in front of us and then another close behind. They were completely unaware of us hidden at the edge of the wood and spent the next few minutes running, jumping, boxing and head butting each other! Definitely worth the walk in the freezing cold wind. :)
