ODT - Box
More boxes from the collection.
By chance a few years ago we found we had a distant relative in Tasmania and as we were already going to Australia we decided to visit Tasmania too. He turned out to be a really interesting man and used to be the Chief Superintendent of Prisons. In July 1989 he confiscated these trinket boxes that were made "illegally" by one of the Prisoners at Risdon maximum security Prison. They are beautifully made albeit a bit rustic, completely made out of old matchsticks - it must have taken months if not years to collect that many sticks. The larger box has been lined, and has a mirror inside, plus 2 chains and hinges to stop the top falling too far back, these extra pieces also must have been hard to get hold of! I wonder who they were intended for?
He gave them to my husband because he knew he collected boxes :)
This was stamped on the box of a new purchase. I'm still trying to work out what it could possibly stand for.
So I finally finished a batch of mosaics. Have a few more that should be ready soon. I always wait for the grout to set for a couple of days before I put a clear coat on them. This is a trinket box.
71 SW Oak Street. Known as Dielschneider Building, it is the 3rd oldest standing building in Portland. Also, one of Portland's cast iron buildings, which have a pretty cool history as a collective and individually.
From two squares. Lid - 8 inches. Box - 7.75 inches. Box hem is folded inwards. The triangle shape is just a crease mark.
My first visit to these beach boxes, although I've been in Melbourne over 20 years. Was a beautiful day to visit.
Ah, kittens in a corrugated cardboard box: Internet gold.
For those who saw my earlier photograph of a pregnant cat outside my front door, I thought you might be interested in the result. They are now about two weeks old, and the next-door neighbor thoughtfully provided this box and blanket when the mother seemed confused about where to move her kittens next.

This is Malton Signal Box and is a NE S1a type from circa 1873. It has an IFS (Individual Function Switch) panel dating from 1966 but was extended 1993 when the box took over control of Heslerton and Rillington areas. All signals here are colour lights and the crossing is operated from a barrier control unit inside the box. The box works Absolute Block to Weaverthorpe and Kirkham Abbey.
By this point the snow was coming down fast but I think it is a nice addition to the shot.

The Pololu MD01B motor driver in it's new home. Have to use plastic screws because the plating around the mounting holes is hot. This small piece of aluminum fastens inside the box via the two countersunk holes visible above the buttons in the previous photo.
Diavolino board mounts on the opposite side.
Even very crude unlicensed Chinese diecasts are usually based on a real vehicle but this range of trucks by Little Ant really does allude me! Could it be an old Mercedes-Benz or something Soviet or even Japanese? Apparently its actually a heavily disguised Nissan Diesel Condor, its side window design and little rectangular shape above the front windscreen being the big giveaways.
Naturally fixtures and fittings are of pretty poor quality with crude detailing but at this bottom of the pile price point you can't expect too much! Part of a four vehicle Top Toys branded set. Mint and boxed.
