"Pairs flights"
Sandhill crane pairs flying here and there at Bosque Del Apache National Wildlife refuge in New Mexico. I have photographed these birds for years and never tire of their beauty and personalities.
Bosque del Apache
Reportedly the 'hole' in the bill identifies this as a greater sandhill crane (and not a lesser) according to a volunteer affiliated with the visitor center there.
Bosque del Apache. He's getting tired of a dozen photographers inching across the road towards him. He's getting ready to go somewhere else/
Yet another series of Sandhill cranes from the Bosque Del Apache National Wildlife refuge in New Mexico. December 2022. Every day was truly unique and different. The number of cranes, the light, the ice, the temperature.....all varied daily.
The Chupadera Mountains start to glow as the Sandhill Cranes leave the safety of the pond to feed in nearby fields.

This was taken with a 10-22 lens (ultra wide angle) at a lookout point at Bosque. The small white things are a huge flock of geese! (I put the uwa lens on my Rebel and left the 100-400 on the 7D)
Sandhill Cranes are just amazing birds! They mate for life....Are incredibly social....Are absolutely beautiful.....Like to kick each other in the face.......Like to dance......Like to talk a lot!!! Here is another series from my trip to Bosque Del Apache National Wildlife refuge and Bernardo wildlife management area in New Mexico winter of 2025.
After a beautiful sunrise at the Bosque Del Apache National Wildlife refuge, we spent the next few hours driving many miles throughout the refuge and making numerous circles. At about 10:00am we found ourselves back where we started our morning. The clouds had remained with us all morning long and with the calm winds, the reflections were perfect. I composed this scene, and as luck would have it, four northern pintail ducks lined up in formation and flew into a perfect spot in my image.

One of my favorite things about photography, is just the ability to catch a fleeting moment. This image was taken at the Bosque Del Apache wildlife refuge in a moment when I was just out looking for some birds. The lenticular clouds and sky, along with the relatively calm water reflection caused me to grab my landscape lens and compose a few shots.
By day 3 of my Bosque del Apache experience, I knew I had paid no attention to the Snow Geese, so on this second morning lift-off, I tried a little harder. I have no idea how I managed to isolate this bird, just one of the 3 bazillion geese there. On this particular morning though, the alleged "blastoff" where everyone takes off at once didn't really happen - the birds spaced themselves out in smaller groups, and I think this one may have been a straggler.
