Blue hydrangeas are among my favorite garden plants. Hydrangeas are very sensitive to soil acidity. When I purchased this bush, the flowers were deep blue, but have come up pink every year afterwards. This year, after flowering had already begun, I added soil conditioners (traditionally aluminum sulfate is used) to lower the pH of the soil, making it weakly acidic. The hydrangea responded, with new buds producing a lavender/light blue flower. The pink flowers had already blossomed and the effect on them is minimal...the result, a hydrangea with both pink and blue flowers.

In April we expected Spring but we had a return to winter! And May has just repeated April weather patterns. Our coldest May on record!
By the end of the month some warmth and even heat has crept into the mix, and as May ends with the Bank Holiday Monday we have sunshine and blue skies.
The garden is beginning to bloom, and there is a feeling of 'catching up' and 'making up for lost time'. And I feel the same! The constant cold has kept us indoors too, and now we want to catch up and see how the world around us has fared during the long 8-9 months of winter. We had a week earmarked for outings in May, but never managed to brave the cold and the rain. Maybe we can try again in June? Fingers are crossed!!
In pandemic terms the talk is all of the new Indian variant. "We'll be led by the data not by dates" was the mantra of the last few months, but it seems that the dates are ruling everything, as England looks set for a June end to restrictions. Here in Scotland we have beaten down a local flare up in our neighbouring county of Moray, but are struggling to contain the new variant in Glasgow. Maybe a summer of vacations and sun is not to be? 'On a knife edge' probably sums it up as we move into June....
Once again, thanks to everyone who has visited my photostream and for the comments and faves. I hope the collage gives an enjoyable look back through May.

Still life - A wonderful book 'My Heart Wanders' if you can locate. This is how I would love to use some of my photographs with words.
Not an exotic Costa Rica plant but a nice looking Mophead Hydrangea at Doka Estate Coffee.
Mopheads (Hydrangea macrophylla) are the most popular hydrangeas grown in home gardens and landscapes. Most mopheads grown today are blue or pink. A few varieties are white.
A refreshing sight on a steamy hot day - The shrub in foreground is Mop-Head variety while the hydrangeas in background are Lace-Caps - both are pretty in blue
This blue hydrangea bloom is still dripping with water from the mornings sprinkler making the delicate petals look extra pretty.

Description: These beautiful flowers of the family of Hydrangeaceae are born of a very intense green, but little by little they are taking color. Although the pink and blue tones are the most frequent, we can also find them in other colors.
This image is SOOC, the fading/drying Hydrangea flower is in the boarder in a sheltered spot so it hasn't been shredded by the wind and weather to which it has been abandoned.

Colour scheme: the many colors of blue hydrangeas: 4 of an indeterminate number!
Grown by a neighbour, the variation in colour is astonishing.

I couldn't help myself.
Yesterday I was in Vancouver for an appointment with an eye specialist who I see for diabetic eye care. He gave me the best possible report regarding the state of my eyes and how well I am controlling my blood sugars. YAY!
Afterwards my sister and I went to a nursery (our favourite one). Because Vancouver nurseries are so much better than Squamish nurseries I just couldn't help myself. Let's just say my sister's SUV was quite full coming home.
Purchase photos to follow I'm sure.
