My wing-it version of the amazing Kinderkram castle blocks. The blade in my bandsaw couldn't handle the arcs in the castle on the real set (the red arc is all that's left of my first attempt), so I made a set of doors and a flat piece (behind the doors) that's sort of a drawbridge. I may go back and redrill the "wheel" (well) if I get a larger diameter forstner bit. Not sure I'll attempt the people- the kids don't seem to miss them. Will be easy to add onto this set as we go- they all have similar dimensions, so they stack nicely. I chose to give them a pretty minimal finish (one coat of watered down acrylic, super fine sanding, and a beeswax/oil finish) so they match the rainbow stacker- and I figure it wasn't worth it to fight the knotty/bumpy/grainy/ nature of the uber cheap 2x6 "dimensional lumber" with a more polished finish. Bonus? The damage that's sure to come, is already disguised. ;)
Italian butcher block that was used by the famous Macelleria (butcher) Falorni in Greve. Antique knife is from the 1800's and we have just included this because it looks great with the piece.

2009-FEB-23; It is strangely comforting to know that my kin are buried near Dan Blocker. He was reportedly as nice in person as his character was in the "Bonanza" series.
One of the most notable historic landmarks in Cincinnati is the Carew Tower, which is a part of a larger complex that fills almost the entire block between 4th Street, 5th Street, Vine Street, and Race Street in Downtown Cincinnati. Constructed between 1927 and 1930, the Art Deco-Style complex was designed by the firms W.W. Ahlschlager & Associates and Delano & Aldrich, and was developed by John J. Emery to replace the old Mabley & Carew Department Store and the Hotel Emery, and provide high-quality hotel accommodation, as well as top-notch office space in downtown. The complex includes the 49-floor, 574-foot (175 meter)-tall Carew Tower, which was the city’s tallest building from 1930 until 2010, and the Cincinnati Hilton Netherland Plaza Hotel, one of the finest accommodations in the city. The building is considered to be a prototype for large-scale mixed-use development as was later seen with Rockefeller Center in New York City, as well as the basis for the design of the Empire State Building. The tower features the city’s most notable observation deck atop the 49th floor, which allows for spectacular views of the city, the Ohio River, and Northern Kentucky. The complex features ornate Art Deco ornamentation throughout, most notably around the entryways, in the Palm Court, Lobby, and Continental Room of the Hotel, and the lobby of the tower. The complex originally included a third tower with an advanced mechanical automated car storage system, something unseen and unheard of today outside of the world’s largest cities, which later fell out of favor as self-service parking garages were built in the mid-20th Century, eventually being demolished in 1980. Today, the Carew Tower and Netherland Plaza Hotel are listed as National Historic Landmarks, owing to their artistic merit, design, and history, having been designated in 1994. The complex is one of twelve national historic landmarks in the city, and is one of the city’s most significant places.

Some blocks I started making from a pattern in the latest American Patchwork & Quilting magazine from my Verna by Kate Spain layer cake & some coordinating Bella solids. I love these! I'll probably keep making them with the entire layer cake.
Also, "60 blocks of summer" #'s 3, 4, 5 & 6.
I love meeting my neighbors and having a chat and a couple of drinks, along with food, a feel-good experience.
I wanted to do a Amortentia Potion but I needed space to do the smoke spirals above it so I squished the cauldron down rather than make it smaller. I amde the smake spirals out of ribbon and put on some love hearts so it would be obvious it was a love potion. The potion itself is meant to be mother of pearl in colour.

People in the Africa south of the Sahara, in the Americas, and in Australia never invented the wheel. This device, one of six simple machines, was unknown on this coast until Europeans brought it with them on ships in the form of blocks, as sailors call pulleys.
The title of this picture might have been "block and tackle," except that you can't see the tackle, which is the other pulley in the system.
