Early wells were drilled using a spring pole apparatus - men would use their feet to "kick down" the drill bit and chip away at the rock (see: www.petroleumhistory.org/OilHistory/images/Cable/Sp_pole.jpg). Three feet of hole per day could be achieved using this method. As the oil industry developed, wells were drilled using cable tool rigs and later, rotary drill rigs. Most petroleum wells are drilled using rotary drill rigs - seen here is a drilling bit for this type of rig. This is a tri-cone bit. During drilling, the three cones rotate and the projections abrade and remove rock fragments. In addition to being used for drilling petroleum wells, tri-cone bits have also been used at some mines to drill holes. The holes are then packed with explosives and detonated (e.g., this was done in the iron mining districts of Minnesota).

Had a bit of a look at the new Brighton Transport Hub this afternoon [ still under construction ]. This view showing the new modest loco facilities. Off to the left is the marshalling yard. A large concrete apron straddles the area between the track on the right to the yard tracks on the left. Most of the trackwork appears to be in place. Thursday 23rd June 2011

I've used a lot of German Flott braces. They might not be the best looking braces you'll find but they are excellent users, well made and very solid.
This is the nicest example I have ever seen. For once I have only had to clean off some very light surface rust and then polished the steel parts with Autosol and a cloth. The ratchet mechanism works like a clock and the paintwork is original. Even the transfer decal logotype on the sweep handle is almost entirely intact.
The Flott braces comes with a variety of chuck jaws. This example has four jaws which are riveted to the chuck. The jaws are very well working. They will accept square as well as round shanks. The jaws are designed so that the square shank will fit inside a square hole in the bottom of the chuck and the jaws will the center and lock the bit.
A bit of tomfoolery before the ethnic Thai puppet show actually started stimulated the interest of the audience. Jokes and a comedy flirting sequence with the puppet drew much laughter from the audience downstairs. Sadly, I could not catch much of it from my first floor vantage point. I could see the performance dashing into and out of the crowds downstairs, meaning the main theatre downstairs would have been a lot more interactive. I had my guide covering that fore me- she managed a couple of interesting shots. Traditionally, Khon dramas (traditional Thai puppet shows) were performed at the court mostly for special occasions, i.e. weddings, funerals, births, etc. On rare occasions, there was the odd open-air performance which even the public could attend. With the change to a constitutional monarchy in 1932, royal support for Khon performances declined and there were no royal performances inside the palaces any more. The art began to slowly fade away into obscurity. Happily however, the Thailand Department of Fine Arts in Bangkok has now managed to revive the tradition and has been staging public Khon puppet show performances for a number of years now. Feeling a bit sorry for himself after a vet visit, apparently, as this was completely unstaged. I think it was all about the insult of wearing the cone home, he got a bit panicked by it a few times too when he couldn't look down to step over something, and when he couldn't understand why the mean coffee table was blocking him from getting to me.
He apparently copped an accidental finger in the eyeball last night while goofing around with 'Dad'. Knowing Zach he probably jumped into it! Dad didn't think there was any major damage or fingernail issues last night so we decided to see how he pulled up this morning as he was squinting at me after it happened (you can see the squint in one of the out takes below).
This morning he was still squinting at me, and he seemed to have a bit of swelling under his eye, so I packed him off to the vets. Our normal vet was booked (to the eyeballs! Har!) so they sent us off to another vet a few suburbs over. She was fairly nice and Zach was much better behaved for her after the controlling excitement work I've been doing with him lately, plus the fact it wasn't his most favourite person in the world - our main vet Justin.
After some yellow dye in the eye and an inspection for cuts under the flouro light he was given the all clear for scratches, some anti-inflamatories, and a tube of stuff to go in his eye twice a day. Dad, you're now banned from getting him excited indoors full-stop, that play session cost me the morning and over a hundred bucks! Lucky he's interstate for a couple of days...
Bit too much ink in the bottom left corner, but for a test print, it's pretty good :)
Less ink next time.
bit of a busy w/end so a bit of easy macro , seen a video on you tube about taking macros ,so thought i would try
Sharing a Little Bit of Albany History
By Joe Licavoli
On February 2nd, students from West Albany High School finally got to meet and know a little bit about their next-door neighbors from NETL’s Albany site. As part of continuing outreach efforts by both NETL and other community leaders, 28 advanced placement (AP) chemistry students attended a two-and-a-half hour set of talks at the Albany Regional Museum. These talks focused on Albany’s specialty metals history on the production of zirconium and titanium. In planning the event, NETL’s Joseph Licavoli worked with Sylvia Harvey (Teacher at West Albany High), Howard Poppleton (Retired—US Bureau of Mines), Mark Sidall (Retired—ATI Wah Chang), Dennis Emerson (Retired—ATI Wah Chang), Barry Valder (Retired—ATI Wah Chang), Judy Weissert (Director, Albany Regional Museum) and Mae Yih (Retired State Senator). The talks included an introduction to materials science, the history of specialty metals processing in Albany, and current/future uses of titanium, zirconium, hafnium, niobium, and tantalum.
After the talks, students and speakers held casual conversations about careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields and about specific research topics that had been discussed.
Mae Yih graciously offered to provide lunch for the students as well. Students were very engaged in the talks and grateful for the opportunity to discuss science with people that have helped make Albany a key player in metallurgy over the years. As part of her “Albany Renaissance” project, Mae Yih is sponsoring an essay contest for Albany area schools with this year’s topic focusing on the metal titanium and its uses. This essay contest and the high school visit are a part of ongoing efforts by members of the Albany community to help advance STEM education and bring more attention to the strong influence and positive effects that metallurgical processing facilities have had in shaping Albany’s history

8 Bit Balloons on the Fourth Plinth (One and Other) performance art in Trafalgar Square, London.
8 Bit Balloons is a construction of balloons organised into binary numbers. The letters of a message have been converted from their computer ASCII codes into binary numbers. Each group of 8 balloons in the binary code for a letter.
The balloons also have while LEDs inside them which can be seen in the closer shots.
