Tempura chicken bento box for lunch from my local Japanese restaurant.
This is my Lil'Chick's lunch for today ...
Top: whole wheat spaghetti w/shredded carrots, corn-on-the-cobb, cauliflower & green beans. Bottom; baby carrots, red grapes and hazelnut, dried cranberry & colorful chocolate covered sunflower seeds (they're sort of like m&m's, but a lot smaller).

Well, a mock piranha anyway. Spicy konnyaku and nametake too. I did replace the nametake container with a covered one to avoid spillage.

Finally got round to digging out this food flask for a Bs photo. Can't seem to find the mini helmet though, else I would have done the helmet too...
23rd October 2016., Japan
While traveling from Nagoya to Tokyo on a JR Rail High Speed Shinkansen train, I dined on this excellent Bento Box
We seem to spend a lot on groceries, so we try to have beans & rice once in awhile for a cheap meal. Although once you throw in some avocados, tomatoes, red peppers, green onions, etc, etc, it's not so cheap anymore! The Trader Joe's Cuban Black beans are GREAT for this purpose. They have a nice tasty sauce. Also good for veggie tacos, burritos, etc.
I think I have enough variety of bento boxes now. Had to have a sandwich basket and of course a Saba Man hot food bento for packing curry or stew or chili...
PS. I welcome any yummy bento sandwich recipes.
Color on a rubber stamp with a food marker. Obviously, you want to clean the stamp well before you do this to be sure no toxic ink is on there.

the lighter summer fare continues. i knew i wanted to do a brown rice salad this week to hit my carbs and with some chickpeas in it, that would be protein as well. but i was stumped with what else to do as far as sides, since i knew i would be packing the salad with veggies as well. then i realized i way too much frozen fruit in the freezer, and gee, cole slaw sounded good.
but the brown rice veggie salad is the star of the show, and this is going to become one of my favorite standbys, no doubt changing with the season and veggies available. i really love the different texture and crunch each of the veggies have from the tender zucchini to the super crunchy celery. in my usual lack of any recipe:
2 cups brown basmati rice, uncooked
GF temari
apple cider vinegar
olive oil
2 stalks celery
2 zucchini squash
1 bell pepper
pint grape tomatoes
2 cucumbers (or 1 seedless cucumber)
1 can chickpeas, drained
1 bunch green onions
large handful fresh basil
salt, pepper, celery seed, cumin seed
steam the brown rice as directed in rice cooker. whisk together a couple tablespoons of temari and about 1/4c. cider vinegar. stream in a tablespoon or so of olive oil. when rice is cooked , put into large bowl and dress immediately with soy/vinegar/oil. cover with towel and let cool.
slice zucchini into long quarters and toss with a little olive oil, salt and pepper and give a quick grill until tender. chop all other veggies. chop zucchini once cool.
combine all veggies and beans, and dress to taste with oil and vinegar. season with salt, pepper, celery seed and cumin seed (yes, unusual, but i love the smoky hint it gives, and is perfect with the chickpeas). combine veggies with rice and toss until thoroughly mixed. check seasonings and amount of dressing. mine was very dry and "blah" so i added some extra red wine vinegar and a little more temari until i got the tangy bite i was going for.
finish with finally chopped basil leaves and chill.
I have my brand new bento, a Mr. Bento from Zojirushi! It's supposed to act like a thermos, with the soup on the bottom staying hot and keeping the one above it warm. To see just how well that works, today's lunch involves black bean soup, a grilled cheese and spinach sandwich, roasted asparagus with parmesan cheese, and strawberries.
As I suspected, the sandwich ended up a little bit soggy but honestly, I wanted to dip it in my soup anyway so that's ok. And it was still warm and the cheese was soft and delicious so I'm declaring it a victory for my inaugural Mr. Bento outing.

I really like San-X characters and I just discovered this character so I decided to make a bento featuring Socks Nyanko. I don't know much about this character other than it loves socks.
Today's bento features spinach and carrot tamagoyaki, broccoli, red pepper and potato salad.
Eggplants from today's farmer's market Tamagoyaki, colorful carrots namasu, saturn peach, figs, champagne grapes.
