At some point the Okanogan Glacier pushed southwards, terminating in a moraine which blocked further megaflooding within Moses Coulee. Thereafter, the megafloods coursed through the Grand Coulee, not both.

The alkaline coarse-grained basalt formation with a structure of radial joints, at Hanasaki cape, Nemuro, Hokkaido, Japan. Such pillow lava is formed when dolerite magma flows into the mud deposited on the sea floor. This national natural monument, with a diameter of 6m, is called “Kurumaishi” because of its wheel-like structure.

Am 16. Juni 2019 präsentierte sich Fulda mit leicht bewölktem Himmel und Temperaturen um 20 Grad Celsius. Es herrschten angenehme Bedingungen für einen ausgedehnten Stadtrundgang sowie Erkundungen im Umland. Die Straßen der Altstadt waren belebt, Grünflächen und Gärten zeigten sich in voller Frühsommerpracht.

Fulda, im heutigen Bundesland Hessen gelegen, blickt auf eine über zwölfhundertjährige Geschichte zurück. Die Stadt entstand im Zusammenhang mit dem Kloster Fulda, das 744 von Sturmius, einem Schüler des Missionars Bonifatius, gegründet wurde. Dieses Benediktinerkloster entwickelte sich bald zu einem bedeutenden religiösen, kulturellen und wissenschaftlichen Zentrum des Frankenreichs. Im Jahr 1752 wurde Fulda zum Bistum erhoben, was die Stellung als kirchliches Zentrum weiter stärkte. Die barocke Stadtstruktur, die große Teile des historischen Kerns bestimmt, stammt größtenteils aus dem 18. Jahrhundert. Besonders auffällig ist der Fuldaer Dom St. Salvator, dessen heutiger Bau unter Fürstabt Adalbert von Schleifras nach Plänen von Johann Dientzenhofer entstand und zwischen 1704 und 1712 errichtet wurde. Der Dom ist eine der bedeutendsten Barockkirchen Deutschlands und beherbergt das Grab des heiligen Bonifatius. In unmittelbarer Nähe liegt das ehemalige Stadtschloss der Fuldaer Fürstäbte und späteren Fürstbischöfe. Der barocke Schlossbau umfasst mehrere Flügel und ist von einem weitläufigen Schlossgarten mit Orangerie umgeben. Das Interieur mit seinen prächtigen Sälen, Salons und der Schlosskapelle ist teilweise museal zugänglich. Die Altstadt weist zahlreiche erhaltene Fachwerkhäuser, barocke Bürgerhäuser und Kirchen auf, darunter die Stadtpfarrkirche St. Blasius und die Severikirche, deren Ursprünge bis ins 9. Jahrhundert zurückreichen. Auch das Paulustor, Teil der ehemaligen Stadtbefestigung, ist erhalten. Ein weiteres historisch relevantes Bauwerk ist das ehemalige Kloster Frauenberg mit zugehöriger Kirche, das auf eine Gründung im 17. Jahrhundert zurückgeht und heute als Franziskanerkloster geführt wird. Einblick in die städtische Geschichte gibt das Vonderau Museum mit Ausstellungen zur Archäologie, Stadtgeschichte und sakralen Kunst. Im Umfeld der Stadt befinden sich zudem kleinere historische Ortschaften mit romanischen Kirchen, alten Höfen und Zeugnissen früherer Landwirtschaft und Handwerkskunst.

Die Stadt Fulda liegt am gleichnamigen Fluss und wird von verschiedenen naturräumlichen Gegebenheiten geprägt. Das Fuldaer Becken bildet eine Senke zwischen Rhön, Vogelsberg und Knüllgebirge. Diese Lage bringt eine vielfältige Landschaft mit sich, die von Flusstälern, Hügeln, Ackerflächen und Waldgebieten bestimmt wird. Der Fluss Fulda durchzieht das Stadtgebiet von Süden nach Norden. Die Ufer sind in weiten Teilen renaturiert und bieten Lebensräume für Wasservögel, Fische und Amphibien. Biber und Eisvögel finden sich ebenso wie zahlreiche Insektenarten. In den Auenbereichen wachsen Weiden, Eschen und Erlen. Der Schlossgarten Fulda enthält neben barocker Gartengestaltung auch naturnahe Flächen mit alten Bäumen, Wiesen und Teichen. Die Umgebung weist eine abwechslungsreiche Flora und Fauna auf. Besonders erwähnenswert ist das nahegelegene Biosphärenreservat Rhön, das sich südöstlich der Stadt erstreckt. Es gehört zu den UNESCO-Biosphärenreservaten und zeichnet sich durch Hochmoore, Basaltformationen, Magerrasen und artenreiche Bergwiesen aus. Diese Regionen beherbergen seltene Arten wie das Schwarzkehlchen, den Rotmilan, das Knabenkraut und verschiedene Fledermausarten. Wanderwege wie der Milseburgradweg oder der Hochrhöner führen durch abwechslungsreiche Naturräume. In den höher gelegenen Bereichen der Rhön dominiert montaner Buchenwald, während in den Talbereichen Feldgehölze, Heckenlandschaften und Feuchtwiesen auftreten. Auch die Geologie ist vielfältig: Basaltkuppen, Muschelkalkböden und Lössauflagen bilden ein differenziertes Relief. Entlang der Flusstäler haben sich infolge landwirtschaftlicher Nutzung artenreiche Wiesenbiotope erhalten. Im Bereich der Fuldaaue wurden Teile renaturiert, um Überschwemmungsräume zu sichern und Lebensräume für bedrohte Arten zurückzugewinnen. Darüber hinaus existieren zahlreiche Streuobstwiesen mit alten Apfel- und Birnensorten, die Insekten und Vögeln Nahrung und Nistmöglichkeiten bieten. Besonders im Frühjahr und Frühsommer zeigt sich die Region mit intensiver Blüte und vielfältigem Insektenleben. In den Gärten, Parks und Stadtgrünflächen finden sich neben Zierpflanzen auch heimische Gehölze wie Hasel, Hainbuche, Linde und Wildrosen. Umweltinitiativen setzen sich für Erhalt und Pflege dieser ökologisch wertvollen Räume ein. Neben der Rhön ist auch der Vogelsberg mit seinen Wäldern und Basaltkuppen östlich der Stadt ein bedeutender Naturraum, der durch Wanderrouten, Schutzgebiete und Naturlehrpfade erschlossen ist.

Fulda ist regelmäßig Bestandteil kultureller und historischer Reiserouten und wird im Rahmen von Tages- und Mehrtagestouren besucht.
