No matter what the weather, Moraine Lake is still my favourite place in Banff to visit

Looking towards the Banff hotel in Alberta Canada

The Fairmont Banff Springs, formerly and commonly known as the Banff Springs Hotel, is a historic hotel located in Banff, Alberta, Canada. The entire town including the hotel, is situated in Banff National Park, a national park managed by Parks Canada. The hotel overlooks a valley towards Mount Rundle, both of which are situated within the Rocky Mountain mountain range. The hotel is located at an altitude of 1,414 metres (4,639 ft).

The hotel opened in 1888 by the Canadian Pacific Railway, as one of the earliest of Canada's grand railway hotels. The hotel property has undergone several stages of growth and redevelopment. The original hotel structure was designed by Bruce Price, with another structure completed in 1914. In 1926, a fire destroyed the original structure on the hotel property, although a replacement structure was later completed in 1928. The building was designated as a National Historic Site of Canada in 1988. The hotel property is presently managed by Fairmont Hotels and Resorts. (Wikipedia)

Banff Springs Hotel on the Bow River

At the top of the Banff Gondola, great views of the surrounding mountains. We even had some snow! This from our month long adventure around the West of Canada, from BC to Alberta, staying in an RV. Still very cold at this time of year.

Looking out from a viewpoint near the top Tunnel Mountain Trail over the landscape just outside of the town of Banff in the Banff National Park. The Tunnel Mountain Trail is a short family walk from the town of Banff up to some fabulous viewpoints.

Banff, Alberta from Sulfur Mountain

Banff is always a great place to shoot. Certainly no shortage of beauty. I am most fortunate to be able spend a couple of weekends there every year....except of course last year. Hopefully will be able to travel again this Fall!

It was a beautiful, bloody cold fall night in Banff. This was my second attempt to shoot the Milky Way. And I froze my touche off talking this series. But whats photography without a little suffering! And oh what a joy!

I was fortunate on the day we went up in the Banff Gondola to have dome dynamic clouds. Once up there you can leave the big structure at the top with restaurants, museums, and shops and take one of many trails all over the top of the mountain. My wife is apparently more adventurous than me because she wanted to take off on a dirt trail. With weather like this, I did not think that was so wise. So we stuck to the wooden boardwalk that went out quite a ways to this hill-top fire lookout. It was not used for that anymore, but had a neat exhibit inside to say what life was like living on the mountain.

I liked the way this walkway beckoned the traveler to the top. Whomever built the trail did a great job designing the walkway to beg, almost dare you to approach. The treeless mountain top created a stony look that also seemed bleak, almost hopeless. On top of that the air was cold, and the sky was foreboding. I wanted to capture the walkway, the call to march on, the look out, the weather that day, all blending to create a neat atmosphere. This was my attempt to capture that moment. Approach if you dare.
