Jay and I were in Bahrain for two and a half years while I was teaching at the Bahraini Air Force. I arrived in January of 1989 and we ventured onward to Dubai in the middle of 1991. We lived in several locations during our time on the island.

Set against the backdrop of palm trees and the sea, the Grand Mosque strikes a beautiful picture. With its exquisite Bahraini architecture, crowned by the world's largest fibreglass dome and blessed with a tranquillity reserved for the holiest of holy places, the Grand Mosque truly lives up to its name.
Though non-Moslem visitors are welcome, it is important that you dress modestly, cover your head and take your shoes off before entering.

Thee Grand Mosque in Bahrain was one of the most welcoming I have ever been in. We met a lovely guide who was very clear and educated in her delivery. A really fine building and more subdued than that in Abu Dhabi!
In Bahrain, witnesses say riot police have tried to disperse protesters with tear gas and rubber bullets.
The clashes took place as officers attempted to stop people gathering for a major rally in the capital, Manama.
It follows demonstrations on Sunday, with protesters calling for reform in the island kingdom.
Bahrain has Sunni muslim rulers but the population is 70 per cent Shia, who claim they are regularly discriminated against.
