Jay and I were in Bahrain for two and a half years while I was teaching at the Bahraini Air Force. I arrived in January of 1989 and we ventured onward to Dubai in the middle of 1991. We lived in several locations during our time on the island.

"Historically, this is one of the most important sites in Bahrain. The fort, located on the north coast, was built in the 14th century, but excavations in the area reveal it to be the site of settlements dating back to the Dilmun era, or around 3000 BC. The fort itself is very much a part of Bahrain's history. In the early 1500s, the Portuguese saw Bahrain as a key point to protect their trade routes between India, Africa and Europe. They invaded the island and set up military base at the Bahrain Fort. They strengthened the perimeter and erected new stone towers. The fort is still sometimes referred to as the Portuguese Fort." - from Bahrainguide.org

In 2006, just before I started my first "real" job, we went on a trip to the Middle-East: Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, back to the Emirates, to Oman and back to the Emirates.
I went with a Dutch friend from school with Moroccan roots and who could speak Arabic and another Dutch friend that I met during an internship in South-Africa in 2003.
At that time, tourism wasn't that big in these countries. What I can remember is that the flight was around €500. We flew on a old ass Alitalia B767: Amsterdam - Rome - Dubai.
Air Arabia: Dubai - Bahrain was €40. Al Jazeera Airlines: Bahrain to Kuwait was €40 and €50 back to Dubai. We rented a car in Bahrain and Emirates and drove to Oman.
It was a fantastic trip. We didn't have a plan. Holidays were much more relaxed and much more an adventure in those days.

I have found that when in a foreign country, it's best to know a local who is willing to show you the sights, take you to the best restaurants, and keep you out of trouble. I've been in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia on a business trip. I met Faris in the hotel restaurant. He asked me about what we had planned for the day. I told him that we wanted to get out and do some shopping and see the sights. He said he had a lot of questions (about America), so I invited him to join us.
It was quite the stroke of luck. He helped me pick out a hookah and several other items, negotiated prices with the vendors, took us to a fabulous restaurant, and introduced us to Saudi culture. He did have questions about our country, but I'm quite sure I learned much more from him.

In Bahrain, witnesses say riot police have tried to disperse protesters with tear gas and rubber bullets.
The clashes took place as officers attempted to stop people gathering for a major rally in the capital, Manama.
It follows demonstrations on Sunday, with protesters calling for reform in the island kingdom.
Bahrain has Sunni muslim rulers but the population is 70 per cent Shia, who claim they are regularly discriminated against.

Inauguration of BFH ( Bahrain Financial Harbor) . Everyone expected a lot of fireworks but to our dismay it just lasted 5 mins, but for a place where fireworks are illegal to be used other than the govt, it was definitely worth the wait and a beautiful sight.
