The archaeological site of Bahrain Fort is one of the largest in Bahrain. It is located on the north coast of the island. The area of this mound is about 400x700 meters and about 8 meters in height.
Qal'at Al-Bahrain site was inscribed on the UNESCO world Heritage list in 2005, based on its outstanding cultural value. As the capital of the ancient Silmun Civilization, the Qal'at Al-Bahrain site represents not only one of the most important ancient civilizations of the region, but also Bahrain's identity as a center of commerce and cultural exchange.
An Islamic fort dating back to the 16th century A.D. dominates the site and may be the location of the old capital of Delmon. It contains remains of cities which were inhabited during many periods, 4000- 5000 years ago. The study of these remains form the foundation of Bahrain's history that has played such a prominent role in Arabian Gulf archaeology.
Excavations by the Danish archaeological expedition have unveiled the remains of buildings of six cities located around the fort.

Bahrain is the Arabic term for "two seas", referring to the freshwater springs that are found within the salty seas surrounding it. Bahrain has been inhabited since ancient times. Its strategic location in the Persian Gulf has brought rule and influence from the Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, and the Arabs, under whom the island became Islamic.
Bahrain may have been associated with Dilmun which is mentioned by Mesopotamian civilizations. During its history it was called by different names such as Awal, then Mishmahig, when it was a part of the Persian Empire. From the 3rd to 6th century BC, Bahrain was included in Persian Empire by Achaemenians, an Iranian dynasty. From the 3rd century BC to the arrival of Islam in the 7th century AD, Bahrain was controlled by two other Iranian dynasties of Parthians and Sassanids. By about 250 BC, the Parthian dynasty brought the Persian Gulf under its control and extended its influence as far as Oman.
Bahrain was the last stop on our cruise before returning to Dubai and I have to say I liked it. It has a more traditional feel to it like Oman, it is less built up than Abu Dhabi or Dubai, although is does boast a a few pretty nice looking buildings, this one caught my eye.

For a long period of time Bahrain was under British rule, until 16th of December 1971 Bahrain got its independence. This day in the year of 1971 saw Bahrain emerge as an independent nation, wherein celebrated widely every year as the National Day in Bahrain. Set against the backdrop of palm trees and the sea, the Grand Mosque strikes a beautiful picture. With its exquisite Bahraini architecture, crowned by the world's largest fibreglass dome and blessed with a tranquillity reserved for the holiest of holy places, the Grand Mosque truly lives up to its name.
Though non-Moslem visitors are welcome, it is important that you dress modestly, cover your head and take your shoes off before entering.
