There was a gap in the fence; I couldn't help myself! The rubble was calling to me, as was an advantageous angle to the pool.
I was very careful. I walked on the well-compacted tracks of the huge backhoe, and I didn't climb on the masonry piles.
Leonard Natatorium (Macalester College, Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA) was a fairly recent addition (late 70s or early 80s) to the original gym building (1927), which will come down last. The field house is already gone.
The natatorium will be rebuilt, retaining the same name, and will have an 8-lane pool to replace the 6-lane pool here. The new pool will have up-to-date timing equipment, and will not suffer -- one hopes -- from measurement problems that this one had. This pool is a couple of inches short of 25m, so there was a limit to what level of NCAA swimming meets could be held here. Such a lovely mistake by the architect and/or contractor, no?
This rather decrepit looking machine was once the pride of the local council. Now it spends its life running round digging and lifting...with varying degrees of aptitude.

Some awesome super big toys playing in the street. These guys make construction and demolition look like a ballet. It is sweet.
This was a hole dad was digging to repair a crushed 15 inch tile. That repair was no fun. I had to wade in the mud.
Watch out for that bucket! I remember the hired hand we used to have working here. The bucket just about hit him one time, and he saw it coming. I've never seen him react so fast. He was a big guy and he just dropped flat in a blink of an eye. It probably kept him from having a "bonk" on the head.
