The state championship Backhoe Rodeo was held in Greenville on a blocked off section of North Main Street. The competition was among regional winners of the South Carolina chapter of the American Public Works Association. The challenges measured the ability to control the equipment in fine detail.
This test consisted of moving a baseball at the end of a chain into the slot in center of the pipe, then picking up the pipe to place into a stand. It is as tricky as it sounds!
This rather decrepit looking machine was once the pride of the local council. Now it spends its life running round digging and lifting...with varying degrees of aptitude.

This was a hole dad was digging to repair a crushed 15 inch tile. That repair was no fun. I had to wade in the mud.
Watch out for that bucket! I remember the hired hand we used to have working here. The bucket just about hit him one time, and he saw it coming. I've never seen him react so fast. He was a big guy and he just dropped flat in a blink of an eye. It probably kept him from having a "bonk" on the head.
At the very back of the parking lot on the north side of Little Lake Auto Parts, a small sign advertises backhoe services.

Backhoe stalled and lost it's brakes on a steep hill. Ran out of control down the hill, across two streets and a green belt before crashing into a detached garage. Luckily, no humans, animals or backhoes were hurt in the incident
The company that did the "W" to the former dam site apparently did it for free. Other towns are considering doing the same thing, and I guess they wanted to use Dimondale as an example of what could be.
