Early spring visits to the preserve are so exciting, for many reminders this beautiful season can be seen all about. The roar of the waterfalls--the Great Falls--is such a nice backdrop sound when exploring the immediate area . . .
The late, Doris Duke, had left a wonderful legacy in converting a good portion of her magnificent estate into a Natural Wildlife Preserve for the public’s education and enjoyment—just short of 1,000 of the almost 3,000 acres is open to visitors. The other area is restricted to staff and for a wide range of projects. The paths throughout the estate offer such splendid scenery. One is forever exploring, always seeing something beautiful. There are so many pleasant surprises, from the general landscape scenery with the many lakes, ponds, and waterfalls, plus old stone structures in bridges and buildings, to the world of birds and other wildlife, including furry critters, tiny insects, and wonderful plants, from fascinating wildflowers to such impressive trees. The bucolic nature of the preserve is so relaxing—akin to meditating while experiencing the preserve. There is no best time to visit, for throughout the year’s seasonal changes, visitors will never leave disappointed, for each trip offers something memorable.

These 1.5m high ceramics were all made in China, but while 79 of them were decorated at the factory using transfers, one was hand decorated by Royal Crown Derby using 18 carat gold. The latter took longer to complete than the 21 days it took to complete the 79. They were made in Jingdezhen, China's leading porcelain production city. Porcelain goods have been produced here for nearly 2,000 years.
The Harley Gallery was constructed within the ruins of the Welbeck Estate gasworks in 1994. The gasworks were originally built c1870 by the 5th Duke of Portland to light his network of underground tunnels and apartments. They finally closed in 1928 when the Estate moved over to electricity, and the building was then used as storage until 1990 when The Harley Gallery project began.
Taking inspiration from the industrial history of the original building, local architect Leo Godlewski created a building that reflected its industrial past, captured the grandeur of Welbeck and provided a beautiful backdrop for exhibitions.
This is the only space dedicated to showcasing ceramics, furniture and silver from the historic Portland Collection of fine and decorative arts for over 400 years. A new gallery dedicated to the Portland Collection opened in 2016.
The Harley Gallery is part of The Harley Foundation, a charitable trust set up in 1977 by Ivy, Duchess of Portland.
An Alaska Airlines 737-400 Combi is about to touch down on RWY 15 as the Chugach Mountains provide a nice backdrop.
Alaska Airlines operates 5 of these Combi 737s which are half passenger, half freight. They can carry 72 passengers and 4 pallets. As you can see based on the windows, the passengers sit in the back. There's a permanent bulkhead which separates the passenger compartment from the cargo compartment.
Because the passengers sit in the back, that means they enter at the rear up stairs from the ramp...there's no heated jetway to walk down. And having had the pleasure of flying on one of these in December to Fairbanks, it's an experience. It was below 0F when I departed Anchorage, but when I stepped out of the plane to walk down the stairs and across the ramp to the terminal at Fairbanks, it was a brisk -36F (not counting the windchill). Regardless, it was a cool (no pun intended) experience to fly on one of these -400Cs!

A Unique wedding backdrop idea behind the wedding party table that was created for a wedding in Michigan and provided by Kims Gifts. With the lights down low in the reception hall and the can lighting behind the backdrop and the winged sprays, this backdrop became the talk of the evening from the bridal party and all guest.
I finally bought a photographic backdrop and it arrived today, (I've been meaning to buy some for absolutely years!) so I've had my first go at using it. I've learned a few things:
1) I need to stand the dolls further forward from the backdrop
2) I need to use it when it's NOT windy outside!!
3) I also need to get it straight so that the 'deck' they're standing on, has a straight edge.
4) I need to avoid using flash
It was fun though and gives me a bit of variety, especially as I have another on it's way!!!!
