Exploring Historic Downtown Baker City Oregon
Baker City, Oregon’s historic downtown is one of the largest and most intact turn of the 20th century downtowns in the Northwest and is surrounded by historic neighborhoods. The downtown has been beautifully restored and revitalized over the years and is a vibrant and bustling district with lots of small locally owned shop. Throughout the year, and especially during the holiday season, the downtown hosts a number of festive celebrations and is simply a perfect backdrop for celebrating Christmas on Main Street

Our Daily Challenge - Aug 9, 2015 - "Organized"
... fabrics - a project from last month that was definitely worth the effort.
The top bin contains my main backdrop fabrics - everything you typically see in my stream except the all-important black stretchy velvet, which is hanging behind them. These are my workhorse fabrics and the first half-dozen or so images in my recently compiled "Backdrops" Album: www.flickr.com/photos/bztraining/sets/72157655444000498. In the middle of the bin are the sheer, shiny, and sparkly fabrics that don't wrinkle.
Next bin down contains the solid-color crushed velvets. It's great fabric as it is cheap, wrinkle proof, washable, and comes in a variety of colors. I've used it for backdrops, table cloths, capes, Santa Sacks... etc.
Third down are the seasonal and specialty print fabrics. Things I really should use more often, but don't. Paw prints, snow flakes, Christmas ivy... etc.
Last are the vinyl and heavy suede/faux leather fabrics. They are generally more expensive, although I buy as remnants and on sale). I always have great hopes for them but ultimately chicken out when it comes to cutting into the fabric, and so there they sit. (sigh)
What's missing?
All the fleece fabrics (in a very large bin in the garage) and the heavy-weight animal prints (mid-sized bin in the my closet).

Bluestone National Scenic River
This fall season had a glorious beginning for us as we took a long weekend among the iconic West Virginia three rivers. Even though the colors had just started settling in, the mountains already painted a magnificent backdrop for the Bluestone River Valley.

Olivia de Havilland won a Best Actress Oscar for the 1949 film "The Heiress," an adaptation of Henry James's novel "Washington Square," which focuses on Catherine Sloper, a rich woman in 19th century New York who is being romanced by a relatively poor young man played by the then amazingly handsome Montgomery Clift. Catherine's father believes that Morris is only interested in her wealth. Morris proposes to her, leading to dramatic and mysterious consequences for both....
19th century New York:
It had been many months since Catherine's belief in a life of love had been left in ruins when Morris Townsend stood her up on the night of their planned elopement. Catherine's devastation was often masked by stoicism. Even during the season when everyone professed goodwill and joy, Catherine attempted to cover her heartbreak with a facade of ice. This masquerade was made more difficult in December, the month not only of Christmas but her birthday.
Catherine demanded of her friends that no notice be given to her birthday. She ignored the upcoming day so much that she forgot about it.
Imagine her surprise when she entered the grand Christmas party hosted by her society friends the Vanderbilts and was greeted by the singing of "Happy Birthday." Though she was somewhat embarrassed, she was also moved that people cared enough about her to remember.
That would not be the only surprise of the night...
Within an hour, Catherine had wandered away from the ballroom where the rest of the guests congregated. The laughter and merriment that filled the ballroom was stifling, a piercing reminder of her grief over the death of her hopes of love...
As she stood alone, she felt a presence near her. Her heart beat faster and faster, for she felt that she knew who it was. But it could not be...could it?
Morris...Morris had returned, countless hours too late for Catherine's dream of marriage to be revived--not at that moment, at least.
What would happen, however, when they spoke?
Would they see each other again?
Could their romance be revived?
Or should it left forever buried?
So many questions whose answers would unfold over time.
TO BE CONTINUED

This is a backdrop I painted for The Central Lakes College Theater. The backdrop is 24' x 15' Muslin.
I prepped and painted this in about 8.5 hours.

A brilliant explosion of light! This high-energy abstract bokeh captures the pure, dazzling joy of the diwali festive season. The perfect backdrop for an elegant Diwali greeting or a luxurious New Year's Eve post. Where there is light, there is hope and new beginnings.

Phi Phi Island, Thailand.

Before our trip to Bamboo Island.
It was funny, this boat broke the engine in the middle of the ride to Bamboo Island.
Lucky, the weather was good.
We stayed more than 1 hour in the middle of no where in the Ocean!
(with no mobile phone, nothing!) But the good fisherman fixed the engine!
The Phi Phi Islands (Thai: หมู่เกาะพีพี) are located in Thailand, between the large island of Phuket and the western Andaman Sea coast of the mainland. Phi Phi Don, the larger and principal of the two Phi Phi islands, is located at [show location on an interactive map] 7°44′00″N, 98°46′00″E. Both Phi Phi Don, and Phi Phi Leh, the smaller, are administratively part of Krabi province, most of which is on the mainland, and is located at [show location on an interactive map] 8°02′30″N, 98°48′39″E.
Ko Phi Phi Don ("ko" (Thai: เกาะ) meaning "island" in the Thai language) is the largest island of the group, and is the only island with permanent inhabitants, although the beaches of the second largest island, Ko Phi Phi Lee (or "Ko Phi Phi Leh"), are visited by many people as well. There are no accommodation facilities on this island, but it is just a short boat ride from Ko Phi Phi Don. The rest of the islands in the group, including Bida Nok, Bida Noi, and Bamboo Island, are not much more than large limestone rocks jutting out of the sea.
Phi Phi Don was initially populated by Muslim fishermen during the late 1940s, and later became a coconut plantation. The Thai population of Phi Phi Don remains more than 80% Muslim. But the actual population if counting laborers, especially from the north-east, from the mainland is much more Buddhist these days.
Ko Phi Phi Leh was the backdrop for the 2000 movie The Beach. Phi Phi Leh also houses the 'Viking Cave', from which there is a thriving bird's nest soup industry. There was criticism during filming of 'The Beach' that the permission granted to the film company to physically alter the environment inside Phi Phi Islands National Park was illegal. [1] The controversy cooled down however, when it was discovered that the producers had done such a decent job of restoring the place that it finally looked better than it had done before.
Following the release of The Beach, tourism on Phi Phi Don increased dramatically, and with it the population of the island. Many buildings were constructed without planning permission.[citation needed]
Ko Phi Phi was devastated by the Indian Ocean tsunami of December 2004, when nearly all of the island's infrastructure was wiped out. Redevelopment has, however, been swift, and services like electricity, water, Internet access and ATMs are up and running again, but waste handling has been slower to come back online.
