"Football's Fabulous Females" - 2013 Oakland Raiderettes Leah & Rachel go pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
From the Museum's website:
Richard Schreder of Bryan, Ohio designed this single-seat high performance sailplane in the early 1960s. The prototype flew in 1962 in time for the US Nationals in which Mr. Schreder placed third and made the longest flight. A total of 42 were subsequently built. with many variations and modifications.
Our example was completed in 1969 and was flown competitively by Horst Dahlem of Saskatoon. It was donated to the BCAM by Mr. Dahlem in August 2008 after a distinguished period of competitive gliding. With its 52 ft. span, this sailplane is dramatically displayed against the south wall of the Henderson Hangar.
From the Museum's website:
Trans Canada Airlines started operations with the first of fifty-one that it purchased in early 1955. Our “Viscount” was delivered in 1957 and served until 1974. It was then owned briefly by Harrison Airways. It was subsequently used by the British Columbia Institute of Technology as an instructional airframe at Vancouver International Airport, before being acquired by the BCAM. “Recovery” was relatively straightforward, with the aircraft being carried by barge from Vancouver International to the seaplane ramp at Patricia Bay. Restoration was by an enthusiastic and skilled team under the leadership of former “Viscount” pilots Al Catterall, Bob Hallworth and Dave Peters. Our “Viscount” takes pride of place in the new Henderson Hangar.

During Breast Cancer Awareness Month each October, people raise money by organizing activities such as theme parties or a "pink day" (when employees wear pink clothing or accessories) at work. The money raised is donated to the organizers' choice of breast cancer care or research programs.
I am actually wearing something pink every day during october :)

Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM), also referred to in America as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM), is an annual international health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities every October to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure. The campaign also offers information and support to those affected by breast cancer.
Richard Serra sculpture panels for "Sequence " sitting at LACMA lot outside of newly built "BCAM" building. 2007. Photo taken with my Mamiya 645 AF and Kodak 320TXP film. I got to shoot part of the installation thanks to RS since he was working at Gemini GEL with me making etchings at the same time the LACMA install was happening.
Urban Light is new installation at BCAM by Chris Burden that incorporates more than two hundred restored cast-iron lampposts from Los Angeles County. Also, my second Flickr Explore picture.
This year's PINK Basketball games were a huge sucess in part to the hard work put in by Student Activities, the coaches, and players.
The night started with a fantastic tailgate party filled with pizza, games, and music, followed-up by the Men's and Women's Basektball teams taking on Ohio State Lima.
There were a few special treats during the games - including Trotwood Madison Middle School and Trotwood-Madison High School students who joined us for sevral performances! The gym was packed with cheers as their perfomance dance team, flag team, cheerleaders and band absoutley killed it! They did an awesome job and made the gym come alive!
Several special guests who overcame breast cancer were honored during half-time as well.
We thank everyone involved for making the night such a huge success -- and Go Tartan Pride!!!!
BMW Art Car photo by Lydia Marcus
Photographed February 24, 2009 at Los Angeles Country Museum of Art (LACMA)
As seen on my blog: fotonomous.blogspot.com/2009/02/bmw-art-cars-lacma.html
For Andy Warhol, the actual painting of the car became a performance piece, done by his own hand live before cameras as a publicity event. Warhol approached the car with a carefree spirit and an uncharacteristic interest in a sort of "action painting." The car, a BMW M1, is covered with multicolored areas of paint that suggest movement (blurred particularly at racing speeds), but also perhaps individual side panels taken from different cars. This greatly oscures the overall form of the car. With the handle edge of the brush, Warhol scraped lines into the painted surfaces, implying wind moving over the surface but also further de-materializing the surface of this fine racing car. "I adore the car," Warhol said after he'd finished. "It's much better than a work of art." Certainly from a formal perspective much differs from Warhol's paintings, which were often achieved with the use of stencils or silkscreens with a prescribed order. - Christopher Mount, Design Historian and Curator (From the LACMA catalogue BMW ART CARS February 12-24, 2009)
On 09.10.11 radio collective dublab turns LACMA into a sonic adventure with this exclusive, after-hours event. Tour the museum’s galleries with a tailor-made soundtrack, with performances and interactive projects along the way. Then check out an exploration of sound, both amplified and silent, in front of LACMA’s iconic Urban Light sculpture. This event is curated by dublab and presented by LACMA Muse, the museum’s premier group for young art patrons.

”Toil & Trouble," as inspired by the phenomenal Tim Burton Retrospective at LACMA thru Halloween; is an attempt to evoke some of the very disparate forces at play and playful in Mr. Burton's oeuvre. Here is a gentleman that has crossed every creative boundary with iconic style, so a daunting task indeed to try and reveal his unique spirit in song, but with much joy in my attempt. Deciding to have this mix be a sort of counter-soundtrack for the installation, as well a meditation on his considerable style. You'll find ancient and classic tracks with some modern musics from the likes of Shlohmo, Airhead, Flying Lotus with MatthewDavid, and much much more. I do so hope you enjoy, or at least revel in the airs solely Tim Burton." - Daedelus

BMW Art Car photo by Lydia Marcus
Photographed February 24, 2009 at Los Angeles Country Museum of Art (LACMA)
As seen on my blog: fotonomous.blogspot.com/2009/02/bmw-art-cars-lacma.html
I'm not alone when I say that I view many cars as art. BMW has produced plenty of cars that fit into this category (take a look at a 70's era 3.0 CSI or an 80's era 635 CSI and you'll know what I'm talking about). In 1975 BMW decided to put their artwork into the hands of major artists to turn the cars into one-of-a-kind vehicles called BMW Art Cars. I look at it as art squared.
The BMW Art Car Project was originally conceived by the French racecar driver Hervé Poulain, who in 1975 commissioned American artist Alexander Calder to paint his BMW racing car. Since then, prominent artists throughout the world have designed sixteen BMW Art Cars, based on both racing and production vehicles.
I'm really excited that I'll be able to view and photograph four of these special cars at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). Cars designed by Andy Warhol, Frank Stella, Roy Lichtenstein, and Robert Rauschenberg will be briefly on display from Feb 12 to Feb 24, 2009 outside at the BP Grand Entrance. Get there soon before they race off! - Lydia Marcus
As seen on my blog: fotonomous.blogspot.com/2009/02/motoring-imagination.html
LACMA is the first U.S. venue stop in a major, worldwide tour of the cars; they next appear in New York City's historic Grand Central Terminal before heading to a three-city museum tour in Mexico.
Robert Rauschenberg took a completely different approach, not attempting to play with the materiality or non-materiality of the car or suggest speed, wind, or movement like the others. Instead his painting is static and approaches a painted car from an almost educational point of view. "I think mobile museums would be a good idea," he said. "This car is the fulfillment of my dream." Renowned for his use of collage and a multiplicity of materials and forms, Rauschenberg employed a kind of appropriation in his BMW 635 CSi. The most humorous of the automobiles, Rauschenberg painted the hubcaps as though they were fragile antique plates and reproduced Bronzino's famous Portrait of a Young Man on one side of the car and Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres' Le Grande Odalisque on the other. In a reference to the posssible ecological damage caused by the proliferation of automobiles, the artist included his own photographs of flowers, trees, and swamp grass to the hood and roof. - Christopher Mount, Design Historian and Curator (From the LACMA catalogue BMW ART CARS February 12-24, 2009)
A car enthusiast and collector, Frank Stella employed the most rational approach to the painting of his BMW 3.0 CSL. "My design is like a blueprint transferred to the bodywork," he said, and in fact the graph paper-inspired decoration suggests a two-dimensional drawing inflated to three dimensions. Stella sought inspiration from the car's technical drawings and found this to be the "most agreeable solution." However, this is not truly a technical exercise, and Stella references his own sculptures and drawings with the recurring appearance of the French curve and other forms taken from an architect's drawing table. - Christopher Mount, Design Historian and Curator (From the LACMA catalogue BMW ART CARS February 12-24, 2009)
Like the Stella, Roy Lichtenstein's automobile (BMW 320i) incorporates an artistic vocabulary familiar to him (including Benday dots and flat areas of color), but also adapts to the unusualness of the assignment. He said, "I pondered on it for a long time and put as much into it as I possibly could....I wanted the lines I painted to be a depiction, the road showing the car where to go." Again the modulated strip of color indicates movement and wind traveling from front to back of the car. However, Lichtenstein goes further conceptually: "the design also shows the countryside through which the car has traveled....One could cal it an enumeration of eveyrthing a car experiences - only that this car reflects all of these things before they actually have been on the road." On one side a rising sun, and over the rest a depiction of the natural and physical forces that car encounters on its daily journeys. - Christopher Mount, Design Historian and Curator (From the LACMA catalogue BMW ART CARS February 12-24, 2009)
From the Museum's website;
The Westwind IV is a much-modified Beechcraft 18; a small transport and trainer first flown in January, 1937. The Beechcraft 18 was built in large numbers and remained in production until 1967. It featured two Pratt & Whitney R-985 “Wasp” engines, a tailwheel undercarriage and twin end-plate fins. The RCAF had 394 in service as the “Expeditor” between 1941 and 1968.
Our Westwind IV was an ex-RCAF Beechcraft 18 built in 1943. It was used as a trainer in the 1950s before becoming a BC Government transport. It was extensively modified in the mid-1960s by B.C. Government Air Services to “Tradewind” standards. Two Pratt & Whitney PT-6 turboprops replaced the radial engines. A tricycle undercarriage was installed, and a single-piece swept fin and rudder replaced the twin tail. This airplane was assigned to the well-known Highways Minister of the day, Phil Gaglardi. It was subsequently sold to Keewatin Air of Manitoba as a light transport, and was damaged by fire. The damaged airframe was donated to BCAM in 1990, without engines.
Wow. Boobs! Bit lopsided thanks to the fact I had to raise my arm to take the photo!! But yeah.. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month so due to the massive family history of breast cancer and my own fears I thought I'd raise awareness the best way I know how!! Heres to BCAM! XD
Didnt do as many this year as I wanted:S And just C/P the description from last year:
I know, it is halloween and I should be doing a halloween image like probably most of you are doing today. Hehe well this is my halloween photo ;)
And it is also the last day of Breast Cancer awareness month and I decided to rather make a tribute to that.
Thing is, that my mom died from breast cancer some years ago, two years later my sister died from cancer and 1 year after that my other sister ( I have/had 4 sister) got cancer but she is a surviver. I usually do everything I can to make people aware of how bad this can be... So at least I can do is to remind you, girls, women sisters mothers to do a regular check on your self.
1. get em squueeeezed, 2. take care of them girls, 3. dont hide, 4. thinking of you..., 5. pinkkkkkeeee, 6. the pink ninja..., 7. girl in the mirror..., 8. one..., 9. mother nature, father time...

I do truly believe in the cure for cancer. And I believe I do something to wake awareness of how serious this is. I hope you girls are getting em squeezed and that you guys are pushing your girls to get em checked. And I also believe that you are sick and tired of me spamming you with all this pink right now so, until next year ;)

both men and women have breast tissue. In 2002 there were around 42,000 new cases of breast cancer diagnosed in the UK. (N.B. The exact figures are 42,023 for the whole population, 41,724 for women and 299 for men.)
changes to look out for:
change in size - one breast may have become noticeably larger or lower
nipple change - if it becomes inverted (pulled in) or changes its position or shape
rash - on or around the nipple
discharge - from one or both nipples
puckering or dimpling - around nipple
swelling - under your armpit or around your collarbone (from lymph nodes)
lump or thickening - that feels different from the rest of the breast tissue
constant pain - in one part of your breast or in your armpit.
If you've noticed a change.. don't bury your head in the sand, get to your doctor and have it checked out. it could be nothing or it could be cancer. You can also contact breast cancer care on 0800 800 6000 or visit www.breastcancercare.org.uk
Its the scariest thing to go through but if caught early it will be treated and you can have a higher success rate for beating it. just like my mum. she found a lump 5 years ago. it was breast cancer. She had her operation, they removed the cancer and now, she's been in remission and nearly finished her course of treatment .... love your boobs.... they need that little bit of TLC

October is the Breat Cancer Awareness Month.. Awareness isn't enough.. do something! You can just do it. It's for you.
This year, Pink Ribbon Day is Monday, October 25th

Breast self-exam should be part of your monthly
health care routine, and you should visit your doctor
if you experience breast changes.
The earlier breast cancer is found
and diagnosed, the better
your chances of beating it.

I'm going to donate every single penny coming in to my account (for this picture during October), to a Breast Cancer Organization. Get a print here: portfolio.vida.de/p1036622963/e2786004e
