A couple of photographs of a new and fabulous addition to the British Columbia Aviation Museum in Victoria. The story is probably best written up by the article www.key.aero/article/convair-fire-bomber-flies-retirement:

"Canada’s BC Aviation Museum experienced a first on September 23 [2022] – the simultaneous retirement to the museum of both an aircraft and its pilot. The aircraft was Convair CV-580 C-FHKF, a machine that spent more than 20 years fighting fires – and making his farewell flight at the controls was Grahame Wilson, who has some 40 years’ experience in the role. In Grahame’s capable hands, the aircraft made a final flight from Abbotsford to the museum’s home at Victoria International Airport. Kilo-Foxtrot will now be put on static display, with Grahame volunteering as a tour guide, explaining to visitors how aviation shaped the province. Originally built in 1955 as a CV-440 ‘Metropolitan’ – an all-metal airliner – it first flew with Sabena Air of Belgium. Eventually exported to Canada, it was converted to an air tanker and began operations with Abbotsford-based Conair from 2000. Grahame fondly recalls that every year he spent with Conair was “special”, and that of all the aircraft he flew, the CV-580 was the most enjoyable and fulfilling."

From the aviation museum's webpage at www.bcam.net/the-modern-era-1970/, we have a history of this beautiful aircraft:

"Convair CV580 T[anker] 55 spent more than 20 years as an air tanker fighting fires in British Columbia and abroad. The aircraft was built in 1956 as a Convair 440 ‘Metropolitan’- a twin piston-engine, 34 passenger, all-metal airliner with pressurized cabin. In 1956 it entered service with Sabena Air of Belgium, where it operated for 12 years before being sold in 1968 to Frontier Airlines of Denver, Colorado, and modernized to a turboprop airliner designated the Convair 580. Frontier operated the airliner for 17 years until sold to Sierra Pacific Airlines of Tucson, Arizona, with whom it remained for a further 15 years. Exported to Canada, it was then converted to an air tanker configuration and in the year 2000 entered operations with Conair of Abbotsford, British Columbia. At the end of the 2022 fire season and following 22 years as an air tanker, the Convair 580 T[anker] 55 was donated to the BC Aviation Museum by Conair Group Inc."

Bringing awareness through food today - what better way? I find that people will gladly pay $5 for a pink cupcake when it's for a great cause.

I did not have a lot of time to do this shoot, so I think the quality is not that great. But there you go.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness (in women and men) month. Pink continues to be used in connection with Breast Cancer Awareness.

"Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM) (also referred to in America as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM)) is an annual international health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities every October to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure. The campaign also offers information and support to those affected by breast cancer. As well as providing a platform for breast cancer charities to raise awareness of their work and of the disease, BCAM is also a prime opportunity to remind women to be breast aware for earlier detection.

In 1993 Evelyn Lauder, Senior Corporate Vice President of the Estée Lauder Companies founded The Breast Cancer Research Foundation and established the pink ribbon as its symbol, though this was not the first time the ribbon was used to symbolize breast cancer. In the fall of 1991, the Susan G. Komen Foundation had handed out pink ribbons to participants in its New York City race for breast cancer survivors." From Wikipedia.

CANADIAN Y.M.C.A. / SPIRIT / MIND / BODY - corner card

Mind Body Spirit: The Triangle of Life: In 1891, 10 years after the first logo was settled upon, Luther Gulick introduced into the conversation the Spirit-Mind-Body triangle that represented the three-fold nature of man that he saw being emphasized in the Bible. Eventually this became a training presentation that he would give on what the triangle means. His explanation resonated with YMCA workers and leaders and the YMCA began to move out on the theme of developing people in—spirit—mind and body. PATRICIA BAY (PAT BAY) – 1939 to 1945 - In December of 1936, a reconnaissance party under F/L F.J. Mawdsley flew from Jerico Beach, Vancouver, to make initial preparations to establish an air station at Patricia Bay. Surveying for the Patricia Bay aerodrome and seaplane base started on March 29, 1939. In September 1939, the Royal Canadian Navy at Esquimalt, No. 111 Coast Artillery Co-operation (C.A.C.), was mobilized with Avro 626 aircraft. The Artillery took over the Jones Farm at Pat Bay for its initial base of operations. Meanwhile the air station was rushed into being. In November 1939, Western Air Command moved to Victoria to allow closer liaison with Military District No. 11. The station was initially intended for the Commonwealth Air Training Plan, but there were eventually three separate camps using the runways and control tower. The West Camp, housing the Royal Canadian Air Force No 3 Operational Training Unit, and fighter and bomber squadrons. The East Camp, housing the Royal Air Force No 32 Operational Training Unit. This unit trained aircrew from England, Australia and New Zealand. The Seaplane Base, which served also as a coastal patrol base and was part of Western Command's defence against Japanese submarines. In May 1940, the Royal Canadian Air Force moved into its West Camp with a strength of four Lysanders. At the end of the War, military activity at Pat Bay decreased. The Royal Canadian Air Force lingered until 1952. Today the airport is home to Canadian Armed Forces 443 Squadron. They fly Sea King helicopters and serve with the Canadian Navy aboard Canada’s Coastal Patrol Frigates. In its early days, the Patricia Bay facility was the third largest station in Canada. Approximately 10,000 military personnel passed through Pat Bay, and at any one time, 3,500 could be enrolled in the operational training programs. Aircrew, ground crew and support personnel participated in the training programs. This was the last step in their training, and graduates would be posted directly to operational squadrons. Female postal clerk enjoyed reading servicemen’s romantic — and corny — letters to lovers during WWII - Florence (Flo) Huttala served as a postal clerk in a post office in Patricia Bay, British Columbia during the Second World War. Huttala served in the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) Women’s Division during the war. She was stationed in Patricia (Pat) Bay, British Columbia — near Victoria — for the duration of the war, while she spent most of her time working at the post office. “We had an army sergeant in charge of the post. He was a good, nice friendly person,” said the 99-year-old. “We had to go get the mail from the delivery service. And if it was bad weather, he always went instead of sending us.” LINK to the complete article - www.moosejawtoday.com/local-news/female-postal-clerk-enjo...

"Football's Fabulous Females" - 2018 Oakland Raiderettes Katie, Krishina, Angel & Maddy "Go Pink" for Cancer Awareness at Raiderville (October 28th vs Colts)

I had been meaning to do a tribute / awareness photo like this since the beginning of the month, but the right photo did not present itself until today.

I myself personally have lost a couple family members to cancer, same with Lisa, and we all know people who are either fighting cancer or have people close to them who are. It is a serious issue and one that awareness needs to be spread about.

My thoughts and prayers go out to all those worldwide who are dealing with cancer, and may you all be happy and healthy this Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2011!

Here is an excellent synopsis I pulled from a BCAM tribute photo posted by my dear friend Bushra, and I am sure she will not mind me borrowing it:

October is Breast Cancer awareness month. Survival Increased Significantly In Early Stage Breast Cancer After Treatment With Herceptin And Chemotherapy.

Breast cancer awareness is an effort to raise awareness of breast cancer and reduce the disease's stigma by educating people about its symptoms and treatment options. Supporters hope that greater knowledge will lead to earlier detection of breast cancer, which is associated with higher long-term survival rates, and that money raised for breast cancer will produce a reliable, permanent cure.

Breast cancer advocacy and awareness efforts are a type of health advocacy. Breast cancer advocates raise funds and lobby for better care, more knowledge, and more patient empowerment. They may conduct educational campaigns or provide free or low-cost services. Breast cancer culture, sometimes called pink ribbon culture, is the cultural outgrowth of breast cancer advocacy, the social movement that supports it, and the larger women's health movement.

So, enjoy the photo and thank you all for your support and awareness of this important issue!
