The BBC Newsgathering team at Park Western wanted a supersize wall map of London so they could visualise where their teams were but more importantly where they needed to be. Looking at a map on a computer screen has many advantages but sometimes when you need to see the big picture you need to see a big picture, hence the reason A-Z Maps and About Signs produced this beast.
The 3m x 2.2m map was printed on our hi definition latex printer, sealed with an anti scratch laminate then mounted to a 10mm pvc backing panel.
The only problem (other than the mysterious fire alarm bell that just appeared) was that that the doors at the BBC were not big enough to get a map panel of this size through. With this in mind we decided to make the map in two sections with a hidden specially designed mechanical locking section that would be able to line up the two very detailed images perfectly.

One revolving door at the Broadcast Centre is broken, the other is extremely difficult to rotate. (It's apparently going to be months before the spare parts arrive.) This sign went up on the one regular door yesterday morning. I thought the wording might be intentional since, well, it *is* more convenient, but it was replaced with the more traditional "inconvenient" yesterday night.

An illegal radio receiver built to pick up foreign broadcasts. After May 1943 most Dutch people were supposed to hand in their radios to the Germans. The only exceptions were members of the Dutch nazi party. So some people built radios like this one out of spare parts. This one has been built into a matchbox. People who handed in their radios were given a receipt by the Germans so that after the Germans had won the war they could present their receipt and get their radio back. That was the theory.
This photostream has been created as supporting material for a documentary called " Ottringham Calling " first broadcast on BBC Radio Humberside at Christmas 2013. This photostream is not however operated by the BBC.
You can now hear the programme via the internet. Go to soundcloud dot com and put "BBC Ottringham " into the searchbox. Look for a black and white picture of a German confiscating radios.
