The Plasser & Theurer built Unimat Compact 08-275/3S universal tamping machine is leaving European soil. It is bound for Algeria, on board of the chartered BBC Anglia.
The theatre opened in 1909, with seating for 2,000. During its heyday in the 1940s and '50s it boasted acts such as Max Bygraves, Hilda Baker, Hattie Jacques, Morecambe and Wise and Des O'Connor. Performances were twice-nightly with a Saturday afternoon matinee. It hosted Repertory Companies and local drama and music groups. It declined in the late 1950s as audiences fell and switched between theatre and cinema. Eventually it closed and was left to decline until its demolition in 1975.
