Note the still blue and grey Mk1 buffet car, deemed essential even for just four coaches of customers.

I'd read in the "Motive Power Miscellany" column of Railway World that the 09:05 Paddington-Birmingham train was still regularly "Western"-hauled. In those days the information was probably a couple of months old by the time it got into print and into the newsagents' shops. We worked six-day weeks on the buses and weekday rest days normally occurred only on late turns. From the time I read the information in Railway World my duty pattern went: early, late (with a rare Saturday rest day), split, early; so a further four weeks had elapsed by the time I had an opportunity to travel on the train. On Monday 28th October 1974 I caught the 07:10 train from Temple Meads and changed at Swindon onto another originating at Cheltenham. I intended to hop aboard the Birmingham train at Reading.
Naturally I didn't want to buy a ticket for the next leg until I knew that there was a "Western" on the front. The plan was to wait until I saw the train approaching then, if it was Western-hauled, leg it double-quick over to the ticket hall to book for Brum. The train was overdue, but eventually the yellow front appeared, far up the line, and I stupidly sprinted off in the wrong direction. Turning as nonchalantly as possible and hoping that nobody had noticed, I ran on, this time in the direction of the subway. There was, of course, an enormous queue at the A-L ticket window. When I'd bought my single to New Street the train was already at its platform and had been for some minutes. It was late and they'd be wanting to get it on its way. I dived for the subway, almost knocking down a uniformed Heathrow Air Link hostess, clambered aboard and slammed the carriage door behind me. Remember that solid slam-door double snap? Always satisfying.
Still panting, I made my way along the corridor to the front of the train noting, with satisfaction, that the leading compartment was empty. There didn't seem to be any urgency about getting underway and doors were still open along the length of the train. I popped out to get this rather unsatisfactory shot. The locomotive was D1037 Western Empress. I noticed pursed lips and shrugging shoulders among the assembled BR staff. A man looked down at the coupling, shaking his head. The locomotive gave that wonderful high-revving "wizzo" growl as it was pressed against the buffers of the leading carriage to slacken the coupling. Now I understood: the loco was a "failure" and was being taken off the train. Brush 47 474 Isambard Kingdom Brunel was produced and hauled the train forward. Typical, bloody typical. So. Not a great success. At New Street I went up to Hudson's bookshop and bought O S Nock's Historic Railway Disasters, which I've still got, and a Bradford Barton, B. R. Diesels in Close-Up which has long gone the way of Nineveh and Tyre. The train back to Bristol was full of squaddies. I moved to a different carriage when one of them started playing a transistor. Eventually I worked out that if I did it the other way around and went firstly to Birmingham, I could catch the return working of this train and then transfer to the rock-solid Western-hauled 13:15 Paddington-Cardiff to get back to Bristol Parkway. I acted upon this credo on several subsequent occasions, always with total success.

This delightful picture was takn at Ripple Station, the station was on the line between Upton-on-Severn and Tewksbury.
The line left the Great Western at Malvern Junction, the first station being Malvern Wells (Midland). The line continued though to Ashchurch. Ripple Station closed 14/08/1961.
This monochrome negative shows the station and buildings much better then the colour transparency I uploaded 10 years ago.
Here we see a lady with 3 children waiting for the train to stop, they are behind a stoutly built porters trolley with a large wooden box upon it. Nearer to the camera is a neat LMS station sign next to an oil lamp, although at first sight it looks like a gas lamp it has no gas supply and has a distinctive chimney.
The loco was 41900, it was a W. Stanier 0-4-4 2P, built at Derby works for the LMS as 6400, it was renumbered in 1946 to 1900 and under B.R. it became 41900. the build date was December 1932. It was withdrawn 16/03/1962 and cut at Crewe works the following month.

66717 looks like its taking its work life very hard as it passes through Primrose Hill running as the 4Z81 Masbrough - Felixstowe .
