B.R.A.T. stood for 'Bi-drive Recreational All-Terrain Transporter'. Obviously BRAT was much easier to say and to write. This Subaru Leone Coupe-Utility derivative was known by many names, it was known in my native Australia as the 'Brumby' - a type of wild mountain horse, kind of like a Mustang. In other markets it was known variously as the '284', 'Shifter', 'MV' and 'Targa'.
The BRAT Adopted Subaru's all-wheel-drive systems, a relatively straight-forward installation afforded by the flat-four engine mounted longitudinally ahead of the front axle. The BRAT's intent wasn't maximum on-road performance, but more flexible offroad terrain. To this end the car also road higher than the standard Leone.
The BRAT style arrived in 1977, a number of years after the development of the base car. This first generation vehicle continued until 1982, despite the Leone being replaced by a new car in 1979.
The body style is what Americans had known as the 'Couep-Utility', a passenger car monocoque body with an open tray. This had a single-cab style, though oddly it was imported into the US with additional jump seats welded into the cargo area to overcome the tariff on light trucks popularly known as the 'chicken tax'.

RD26576vs. SPA VALLEY RAILWAY.
Class 2 2-6-0 78019 and Class 4 2-6-4T 80078 depart from Groombridge bound for Tunbridge Wells West on the Spa Valley heritage railway. The Spa Valley Railway is south east of London and runs between Eridge in East Sussex to Tunbridge Wells West in Kent.
This photo is a still shot that I've taken from a video* that I took that day and it was filmed on Saturday, 10th February, 2024 during the Winter Steam Gala.

37612 sits at the head of a test train berthed at Nemesis Rail, due to the Derby blockade, surrounded by former BR locos and carraiges in varying stages of restoration or decomposition. 170103 rolls by on 1M64 Cardiff to Nottingham whilst a stacker truck moves steel around the Maurice Haulage yard delivered from Cardiff Tidal.

English Electric Vulcan Works 0-6-0 diesel-hydraulic 'Elementary' (Works No.D1229 built in 1967), and rebuilt by Hunslet (Works No.8900 rebuilt in 1967) shunting the B.R. exchange sidings serving Queenborough Rolling Mill Co. Ltd. on 10th May 1990. The erstwhile Ford Motor Company 380hp Dagenham factory shunter, which arrived on the Isle of Sheppey in 1989, was another Queenborough casualty, being cut up on site during 2003

37 186 at Bodmin General, then just part of a soon to be closed freight line. British Rail Western Region got on board the railtour bandwagon in 1983 with a superb railtour of load 7 top and tailed by class 37186 and 37 187. The train left Bristol TM at 08.15 and headed via the now long gone Taunton Goods Line to Carne Point, Parkandillack and Boscarne Junction. This was advertised as the penultimate passenger train to Boscarne Junction before the closure of the freight line from Bodmin Parkway to Wenford Bridge. The next day would see BR run the final train with a DMU from St Austell visiting the same Cornish branches. Even though there is a short platform at Bodmin General unused by passengers since the late 1960s most of us on this railtour just baled straight out onto the tracks like we already had done at Fowey, Parkandillack and Boscarne Junction. You can just see someone disembarking in the third carriage.
On 31st August 1971 'Amazon' raises the echoes across the valley towards Distington as it slogs away from the B.R. exchange sidings at Bains with four loaded hopper wagons of coal from Solway Colliery, Workington, for washing at Harrington Coal Preparation Plant. Built by Vulcan Foundry, works No.5297, and delivered new to the Longmoor Military Railway in August 1946 as Ministry of Supply No.75307, it was sold the following year to Richard Evans & Co. Haydock Colliery, Lancashire as 'Amazon'. After use at Haydock and Sutton Manor Collieries up until the mid-1960s, it moved north to Harrington where it worked up until closure of the washery in May 1973. A move to nearby Ladysmith serving Haig Colliery, Whitehaven proved fateful and it was derelict by the following May, eventually being scrapped on site by T.W.Ward during May 1976.
