Richard Serra's 2004 sculpture Wake in the Olympic Sculpture Park in Seattle.

The sculpture is made of giant curved steel S's which were designed using a computer that used to help make French nuclear submarines.

There are five steel S's in all, which can be walked in and around to get different feels of it.

The Olympic Sculpture Park in Seattle is a nine-acre site belonging to the Seattle Art Museum which includes 20-plus outdoor sculptures and works of art which people can wander into and around.

Built on former industrial land between the Seattle Center (home of the Space Needle) and Puget Sound, the sculptures are located among plants and trees and seem part of the natural landscape itself.

There are works by Alexander Calder – whose Eagle is very similar to the Flamingo in Chicago – Richard Serra and Claes Oldenburg, among others.

Day 34 of 365 - Awake

After yesterday's ordeal at work I had a pretty long day. I decided that I'd, ultimately, not go to bed until my normal time. So, I didn't. In total, when I my head hit the pillow last night, I had been up for about 35 hours straight. I was pretty tired. But, today I'm awake again!

This was taken in my car, on my way home from work (a regular 3-11 shift, thank-you-very-much). I didn't have too much time to get my photo in, so I decided to try something a little different. I think it worked out pretty well. It's definitely not the greatest photo, but I don't think it's the worst, either. I didn't do too much editing on this one - just a little fiddling around with Levels and a little retouching.

I'm excited because I now get my three-days-straight off from work - a co-worker wondered if I would be able to switch with him, so I did. I think I'm going out of town on Wednesday. I don't know where, yet. I just think I need some time away from here. I plan on taking some pretty good photos, no matter where I go!

Surviving cancer and using art as a tool for healing, reflection and understanding has infused my art with a sense of energy and optimism that has a universal appeal. The process of making the art as well as the meaning of it, are both an integral part of the end result and for me there is always a battle to harmonize between the two – to evoke the emotion of the piece and to empower the viewer.

I love combining traditional and new media painting techniques where one feeds off the energy of the other. The visual collaboration of both medias often celebrates a bold expressionism and optimistic edge regardless of subject matter.

My work has evolved from a mashing of referenced pop art and iconic imagery into elaborate multilayered portraits and scenes that depict a more personal interpretation of my life experience, battles and passions. My goal is to lead the observer to dramatic action, putting them on the edge between what we know and what is unknowable. I’ve learned that something new will always come about when you push hard enough and the result is the revelation of a “new identity”.

The motivation for me to keep going is to gain an understanding of how this “new identity or rebirth or truth” actually reflects my life as well as the world we live in – or not.

Just having the first gin and tonic in bar under Eiffel Tower and it's lush! It's a warm evening and we saw the Bellagio fountain show on our walk down the strip. Played some 21 and won before even leaving the Luxor. Need food to stay awake so going back to hotel for buffet! From goody.

Little Bear finally woke up when we got home and spent fun time with toys before bed. It was a late night.
