While trying to avoid people for two entirely different reasons the fox and I did manage to cross paths near St.John's, NL, Canada.

Setting is the beautiful and famous Tollymore Forest, Northern Ireland.

Visit as many museums as you possibly can. The images you see (painted, drawn, etched or photographed) will stay with you for the rest of your life. They will help you to discover good pictures in real life. Suppress any silly ambitions of becoming a great artist. Being a good photographer is difficult enough :-)

Drove right up, rolled down the window and took a picture. These birds are dumber than ditch water. They walk all over the roads and narrowly avoid getting flattened.

Or in this case avoiding lens contact.

I think he was more worried about the photographer to my left with a huge telephoto lens (I can never understand why a photographer would walk around town with a full frame 400mm lens and use it).

In the past I have carried a Nikon D7100 with a Sigma 150-500mm zoom attached - trust me its not ideal for general street photography.

Even taking shots of a riot in Buenos Aires all it did was make me feel like a target (It did keep me a bit further from the "tear gas" - but not far enough). To be honest I wish I had stayed out of the way all together, you need to have a damned good reason to get "in amongst the action" .

(You know your shots or your presence is going to upset one side or the other).

The quieter side of life: Sea front Sidmouth, Devon, UK.

As much as I try to avoid using my drone whenever possible, there are some times when I'm just too intrigued as to what it would look like. I didn't expect the view of the Battle River Valley, looking northeast, to be half as pretty as this - but I couldn't help but feel amazed looking at the drone controller. A westbound grain train led by a newly rebuilt AC44C6M set the stage, as they rolled across the expanse. Although the trestle looks smaller from the sky, the true size of it is amplified when you can see the whole train in one image. I try not to fall in love with drone images too often, as I think they're kind of cheating… but I couldn't think of a better photo to end the trip with.

Les deux Frères (The Two Brothers) facing Cap Sicié - The Two Brothers are two rocks emerging at the tip of Cap Sicié (Var, France) and visible from the Sablettes beach in La Seyne-sur-Mer. It is a place that welcomes many boaters as well as diving clubs whose objective is to visit a wreck located in the immediate vicinity.

The myth of “Les Deux Frères” has given rise to various interpretations. One of them speaks of two fishermen brothers who were inseparable until a mermaid seduced the youngest and lured him down into the depths of the sea. In an attempt to save him, his elder was also dragged to his death, unable to resist the charm of the sea creature. During his agonising final minutes, he begged the god Apollo to save them and ensure they were forever together. And that is how they came to be transformed into two rocks located offshore of Cape Sicié.

The second myth evokes an injured mermaid washed up on the beach, whom the two sailors tried to save. But as misfortune would have it, they both fell madly in love with her and fought to the death. When the mermaid swam back out to sea, she begged Poseidon to bless them with a visible and immutable form in memory of their shared passion. The god of seas and oceans answered her wish by transforming the two unfortunate sailors into two rocks.

Legend tells also that a giant octopus devours careless visitors… In the Sixties, it was even said that the authorities erected a fence around the little island to avoid overly-curious divers meeting their demise.

47274 crosses the Duddingston Park road as it approaches Niddrie Junction West, on the Edinburgh suburban line, in November 1978.

It’s the middle of the day on an autumn day in 1978. The young boy with his lollipop and perhaps his grandmother are waiting at a temporary bus stop, presumably for a bus from Dalkeith heading into Edinburgh.

The visible billboards give an intriguing window into life in the late 1970s. From the left, there is a poster for vodka, followed by a public health message showing an overweight middle aged man with a tinny proclaiming ’Slow down when you get home’. Next across is a poster showing the delights of Espana, followed by a poster advertising Old Holborn leaf tobacco.

The contents of the billboards that the boy is staring at are lost to history.

Currently being used as a storage building for Strathspey Steam Railway Volunteers.

Broomhill railway station or Broomhill for Nethy Bridge railway station is a reconstructed railway station on the former Highland Railway main line which was originally built to serve the small villages of Nethy Bridge and Dulnain Bridge in Strathspey. It is at present the eastern terminus of the Strathspey Steam Railway.

The railway station was opened by the Inverness and Perth Junction Railway (I&PJR) on its line to Forres in 1863, via Grantown-on-Spey (West), Dava, etc.

In 1923 the HR became part of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway and at nationalisation in 1948 became part of British Railways. The line was recommended for closure by Dr Beeching's report "The Reshaping of British Railways" and closed on 18 October 1965.

Following closure in 1965 the station was demolished leaving only the platform and the nearby stationmaster's house. On 31 May 2002 the Strathspey Railway (preserved) re-opened the old station following its reconstruction.

The Great North of Scotland Railway's (GNoSR) Broomhill Junction lay on the line towards Boat of Garten and at this point the original GNoSR Strathspey Railway diverged, crossing the River Spey to reach Nethy Bridge, Grantown-on-Spey, Aberlour, Cromdale, Craigellachie, etc. The Highland Railway (HR) line ran parallel from Boat of Garten station to avoid the cost of a signal box and famously the two lines had different coloured ballast.

Finally, victory from the jaws of defeat, Owner tracked down a pride of seven lions laying in the grass beneath a copse of trees on a small hill. You can see four of the lions in this shot. Below, an extract from this morning's Journal:

After our break we drove in silence until we came to a small hill beside the road, it was covered in trees, and lions. Owner drove around the hill and told us about the 7 lions in that pride. Owner knew the life history of every animal, it was fascinating to learn about them and their individual histories.

As photo opportunities go, this was not a good find. The lions were concealed in the long grass and they were difficult to see, but Mary was thrilled. This is what she had come to Africa to see, and now Owner was her hero, even if he didn’t speak American. At lunch Mary told anybody who would listen that she had seen at least 20 lions. Joe said nothing.

After lunch I left Kanana along with several other guests. Among them were Bob and Bonkers, who arrived with me. I'd avoided them until now, but as we waited for our transfer to the airstrip Bonkers showed me some of her outstanding photo; she was an accomplished photographer. She declared everybody should come to Africa, because she'd learned so much in just a few days. It's true, she'd really blossomed and I was happy for her. Bob still struck me as a dummy.

Packed into a tiny aircraft, we made two short hops to dusty isolated airstrips where passengers got off or on. At the second stop I transferred to a second plane for a short hop to Okuti, I was their only passenger. I was met at the airstrip and whisked away to a rendezvous with my new guide, Chachos, who was conducting an afternoon game drive in the Moremi Game Reserve.

This was quite a culture shock, first the roads are incredibly rough, and secondly we are sharing with vehicles from different lodges, along with private vehicles.

Chachos had found a leopard in the morning, and was keen to show me the animal. When we arrived at the spot, about a dozen vehicles were gathered around and it was impossible to see the leopard which was in a tree. We waited and eventually Chachos got a spot and I had my photos.

Apart from the truly awful roads with potholes big enough to swallow a small car, this is a very different landscape from Kanana. It's more heavily wooded, there's much less ground water and many dry water courses. There are the same animals and much less sage bush. I found myself missing Owner with his vast knowledge and wonderfully dry sense of humour, but not the mosquitoes; those I can do without.

The accommodation here is even better than at Kanana. The rooms are on stilts and connected to the main building by an elevated walkway. I have a very spacious room built of thatch and brick, the roof is thatched. There is a large balcony with a comfortable seat, a table and chairs, and it all looks out over the Xudum River with papyrus reeds on the far bank. It's all very lovely.

It's been several years since I've seen one of these beauties, so this sighting made me very happy!

The foreground is 5 shots for an HDR composite. The sky is 10 photos shot with an Olympus 12mm at f2, 20 second exposures at ISO 1600. The sky shots were composited in Photoshop for noise reduction and the HDR was done in Lightroom. The Milky Way was actually 180 degrees in the opposite direction of this view of the church building. The Milky way photos were taken about 20 yards away to avoid light from passing cars. The overall composite was done in Photoshop.

Eastern Screech Owl

The Eastern Screech Owl or Eastern screech-owl (Megascops asio) is a small owl that is relatively common in Eastern North America, from Mexico to Canada. This species is native to most wooded environments of its distribution and, more so than any other owl in its range, has adapted well to manmade development, although it frequently avoids detection due to its strictly nocturnal habits.

Leavenworth, WA

My brother, Samwise and I took a last minute day trip to Leavenworth today and took an easy little hike on the Icicle Gorge Trail. The mists, clouds, rushing waters, and snow powdered mountain tops were all a recipe for a great day (and we somehow avoided the rain during our meandering, bonus!). Alas most of the fall colors that make this hike famous are gone by now, but there were a lot of golden trees in our landscapes still. Not sure what this lovely mountain is called, but I'll try to figure it out and post an update soon. Cheers!

My great grandmother told me, my grandmother told me, and my mother told me too. I laugh now when I think of all the tricks I invented to avoid eating lima beans, mushy peas, and over cooked zucchini. These days, I eat them all without reservation--okay I've never jelled with the lima beans but I'm okay with the rest. Of course everything looks so much better these days. Just check out this organic veggie display I saw in a store along the San Francisco Embarcadero. Looks almost good enough to eat me thinks.

Here is my entry for the "Your Best Shot 2022 group". I have been chasing an image like this for years at this location and finally grabbed one I am happy with. It takes just the right tide and swell to be able to shoot low enough to the water to see through the arch, while also having enough water to hide the algae covered rocks. Taken while standing in knee to waist deep water, and constantly lifting my tripod above my head to avoid drenching my camera, then re-placing the tripod in time to snap a photo between waves. This spot does not directly face sunrise or sunset so it takes quite the sky to get color above. Hope you enjoy.

I don't recall when exactly I began to take an interest in the bridges of Yosemite Valley. Still, I have always felt that they would make excellent subjects to capture through photography, provided the lighting conditions were just right. Usually, when my family and I visit Yosemite, we focus on the more popular viewpoints, such as Valley View and Artist's Point. However, on our most recent trip, I had some free time during mid-day, which I spent photographing some of the gorgeous bridges within the park.

Fortunately, the low water levels of the Merced River meant that I had a lot of luck with it acting as a reflection pool in many locations. One spot where the reflections worked exceptionally well with the fall colors was the Pohono Bridge. My main challenge was timing my shots to avoid getting cars in the frame, as this is a busy part of the loop road. In terms of composition, my main goal was to minimize the amount of sky in the shots since the timing meant that the sky would be overexposed mainly due to the wide dynamic range of the scene.
