Our area has been avoiding the snow all these weeks. Thinking about all that missed snow, here is a snowy owl. There are two snowy owls on exhibit at ZooAmerica. This is the male, Nash, arrived at ZooAmerica in March of 2019 from the Nashville Zoo. He hatched in June of 2010. The female, Rinna, hatched in captivity at Tallinn Zoo in Estonia. Her hatch date is 2007 and she arrived at ZooAmerica in 2009.Rinna is the larger owl with distinctive black barring while Nash is almost completely white in color with few black markings. Here is a video of them. youtu.be/YdWSMVluUvI

"Each fall, white-crowned sparrows hop off branches in Alaska and begin journeys toward California, Arizona, New Mexico and west Texas. On their trip of several weeks, flying mostly at night, the tiny songbirds may cut back on their sleep by two-thirds....

Rattenborg and his colleagues wanted to see if the white-crowned sparrows that were sleeping less during migration were punch-drunk while awake, so they set up a test in which birds learned and repeated a three-response sequence of key pecks. The caged birds performed best on the test during fall migration time, when they were getting the least sleep....

When urges to migrate kick in, white-crowned sparrows and other songbirds begin flying perhaps as much as 300 miles at night while staying active during the day. Their ability to navigate, avoid predators and find food in different locations while sleep-deprived is a mystery ..."

Another fishing boat docked for the night in the small village of Alma on the Bay of Funday. Now this name of “Fundy Fury”, I can understand as I have experienced some of the fierce winds of the Maritimes. We actually drove down just after a light hurricane breezed through the Atlantic Provinces. That is another bonus of being retired. We can change our plans to avoid the bad weather! Then we get to enjoy the peaceful side of Fundy; like this scene.

This image didn’t go as planned, for the balloon I thought was a part of the setup was flown by the man sitting on the edge of the balloon and he did avoid the ship, but I was winded down by the balloon. So maybe I should have called the image for:

2020 was really starting to get to me. . .I tried to find ways to avoid thinking about the frustrating madness of the world during that year. . .So playing around with old photos became one of the ways I avoided "the world". A good name for what I ended up with would be. . ."The Result of Idle Time".

Here's some more of it. . .

I usually avoid taking photos of a scene that I have seen photographed by so many before me. However not the other day. We finished a hike in the redwoods and when walking back to the car the sun broke through the clouds for a moment before setting so I set up my tripod and took this panorama.

HANDLEY PAGE VICTOR XL231_Yorkshire Air Museum_former RAF Elvington

The Handley Page Victor is a British jet-powered strategic bomber, developed and produced by the Handley Page Aircraft Company, which served during the Cold War. It was the third and final V-bomber to be operated by the Royal Air Force (RAF), the other two being the Avro Vulcan and the Vickers Valiant. The Victor had been developed as part of the United Kingdom's airborne nuclear deterrent. In 1968, it was retired from the nuclear mission following the discovery of fatigue cracks, which had been exacerbated by the RAF's adoption of a low-altitude flight profile to avoid interception.

A number of Victors were modified for strategic reconnaissance, using a combination of radar, cameras, and other sensors. As the nuclear deterrence mission was given to the Royal Navy's submarine-launched Polaris missiles in 1969, a large V-bomber fleet could not be justified. Consequently, many of the surviving Victors were converted into aerial refuelling tankers. During the Falklands War, Victor tankers were used in the airborne logistics operation to repeatedly refuel Vulcan bombers on their way to and from the Black Buck raids.

The Victor was the last of the V-bombers to be retired, the final aircraft being removed from service on 15 October 1993. In its refuelling role, it was replaced by the Vickers VC10 and the Lockheed Tristar.

Amsterdam is highly walkable just avoid walking on anything looking like a bike path and instantly freeze when you hear the ominous sound of the bike bell, an even easier and faster way to get around is to bike if you have the courage to join the fray but be warned the Dutch suffer no fools on their bikeways.

For those faint of heart the city also has one of the best public transportation systems in Europe though no underground exists trams, buses and trains make their way overland in a very efficient and orderly manner at a very reasonable cost.

After many many visits I discovered on my last trip the OV-Chipkart, an anonymous reloadable plastic card that can be found at the train station, at a newsagent or at a supermarket just look for the pink OV-chipkaart logo and best place to purchase one is at the start of your journey at Schiphol Airport.

The initial purchase price is 7,50 euro and can be loaded or reloaded at terminals with the logo but beware that not all terminals use credit cards, once you have loaded what you feel is enough for your use the card is ready to go not just in Amsterdam but all of the Netherlands on public transport, here ends the PSA.

This shot was taken on the evening tour with the Dam Boat Guys and is a good illustration of urban life on the move and also that some of your better shots come from lesser subject matter.

To avoid predators a lot of caterpillars rely on camourflage, but some, like this Grey Dagger Moth caterpillar, advertise warning signs. Apart from the obvious dagger, by its striking red and yellow colouration it also signals it's poisonous to eat. This one appeared on a blackthorn bush in my garden, one of its host plants.

Many thanks for your comments. Wishing you well in all your undertakings.

To avoid any chance of the Woodland Pulp, LLC pulp and tissue paper mill shutting down as a result of the longer than normal period without rail service, Eastern Maine Railway rounded up enough manpower, including three supervisors, to operate the Jordan Spreader from Milltown to Woodland on Sunday to break the line open and spread the mill yard. The former Maine Central Woodland Branch is now owned by the mill with Irving's EMR subsidiary contracted to operate the line. Up until 2012 the branch was owned and operated by Pan Am Railways, isolated from the rest of their system when the Calais Branch was abandoned in 1985. The extra is about to pass under the Neilds Avenue overpass with the road to the new international border crossing in the background.

Avoid the annoyance, maintain social distancing. This Canada Goose wasn't too happy when the Osprey ventured too close after catching a fish from the pond. This is the sort of muttering others may make if you happen to come too close during your outdoor walk.

A northbound Lake States Railway train arrives at Saginaw MI. My trip trip to Michigan was decided due to the fact that it was one of very few states us New Yorkers were "allowed" to travel to at the time due to Covid. We went by Frankenmouth on the w/e and tourist were crammed into the village. We went back on a weekday. A few days after we returned, MI was added to the long list of places with high positives rates.

From the Heligoland cliff edge path you can photograph birds at a height of 50m from a parallel position. There are not many places where you can achieve this special perspective so easily.

Comp. Detail: In the uncropped image I have more sky than water and I normally avoid having the horizon running through the middle of the image. In this case, however, the sky and the North Sea fade into the blurred background and supported by the bird's almost X-shape the viewer's gaze is drawn to the middle or foreground of the image. The horizon itself can only be guessed at. It doesn't cut through the image. That's why I chose the crop so that two elements of the northern gannet's habitat, sky and ocean, are represented together and equally.
