Finally an autofocus lens on my Sony A7. I was able to buy this lens for half the price charged on the second-hand market. I was skeptical about the bokeh coming off this lens. New modern lenses would not be able to make special bokeh is often said. Still, I am very surprised at what I get to see here. Most shots are cropped to cut out the beautiful parts. With a 35mm lens and a 35cm MFD, there is often too much present when it comes to close focusing. Razor-sharp results are very easy to achieve with autofocus. Many reviews are praising this lens and mine as well.

I shoot a lot from my bike, and this alley shot was going to be the kids-on-bikes photo of the year but autofocus understood things differently. Yes my hand looks like some kind of pirate's hand in this rendering. It's not your imagination.

An autofocus calibration tool that I made of Lego. I figure it should work much better than a sheet of paper at a 45 degree angle from the imaging plane.

In this profile view, you can see that the distance scale almost lines up the target with the line between the orange and yellow plates. It isn't perfect, but it is closer than the hight of a Lego stud. In this case, it works well enough because I couldn't find the right flat plates for the center of the target, so plates with studs are used.

Also visible is the red cylinder used to align the camera to make the imaging plane parallel with the target plane. To see it through the target requires a hole, which is why the plates in the center need to be round. Clear pieces connect the plate holding the cylinder to the structure with the target to keep them in the same relative position while allowing illumination for the cylinder.

Did I bother to switch my camera into manual focus mode so that these photos would be sharp? No. No I did not.

The red cylinder is seen through the hole in the center of the target. I found it helpful to focus on the closest part of the cylinder to get a better view of its position. It needs to be in the center of the hole to make the imaging plane parallel with the target plane. Assuming the lens provides a flat plane of focus (none actually do), this will make the distance scale useful, if you can use one that measures distance in studs times the square root of 2.

The Canon EF-M was a manual-focus 35mm film, SLR camera which used the Canon EF lens mount. It was introduced in 1991 for export to the non-Japanese market, and was the only manual focus camera in the EF line. It was not sold as part of the EOS range; the camera's official name was Canon EF-M rather than Canon EOS EF-M.

The EF-M was in essence a Canon EOS 1000 without an autofocus system, a built-in flash, or a top-deck LCD. It was priced slightly cheaper than the EOS 1000, and relatively few copies were sold. It was not directly available in Japan, though some were re-imported.

Uniquely amongst Canon EOS bodies it had an optical manual focus aid, a split-image focusing screen as well as a ring of microprisms. This system was common with manual focus SLRs but had since fallen out of use in the autofocus era. The screen can be installed in several autofocus EOS cameras, and can only be obtained by purchasing a used EF-M

Canon Type Hot-foot.

Orientation: you are looking at the pin layout of an ST-E2 inverted, looking down on the 'hot-foot'.

Pin layout:

It seems that to elicit Focus Assist from an old ST-E2, you need to apply c 5.0V across X to Y. I'll add polarity when I've doubled checked it Edit: X(-) & Y (+) & 4.5 volts is enough. But, you have to keep the ST-E2 awake - still working that one out . . . Edit: just making that circuit seems to be enough.

USB packs can deliver 5.5V, drops to 4.5V when resting.

Autofocus Tracking test.

And now something even more recent (1993 I think). Not as small and as cute as the Agfa Optima Sensor. The folding flash cover was a fairly good idea introduced by Kodak. It kept the flash so far from the lens that red-eye was no longer a problem, and at the same time the cover protected both finder and lens from dirt and fingerprints (ouch) when closed. Many cameras had no protection against finger-prints (not even the Leicas).
