Val d'Isère is a French commune located in the Savoy department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.

Val-d'Isère is a famous ski resort just 5 kilometers from the Italian border. It is located at the edge of the Vanoise National Park, in the heart of the Alps.

The Bellavarde slope was the setting for four of the five men's downhill alpine skiing events at the 1992 Albertville Olympic Games. In addition, Val-d'Isère was the venue for the 2009 Alpine Ski World Championships, also hosting regular for alpine skiing World Cup events.

Val-d'Isère is located in one of the most popular ski areas in Europe. Together with its neighboring town of Tignes, it forms part of the so-called Killy Space, named after the French skier Jean-Claude Killy, and calls itself "The most beautiful ski area in the world". Apart from the beauty of the place, the area is one of the largest ski areas in the world.

Skiing in Val-d'Isère dates back to the 1930s, when a lift was built on the slopes of Mont Solaise. This lift was followed by the installation of a cable car.

The Pissaillas Glacier also makes skiing possible in summer, although in recent times the summer season has been restricted due to the shrinking of the glacier as a result of rising temperatures caused by climate change. The ski slopes are equipped with snow cannons and a large number of chair lifts, in addition to the funicular that connects the La Daille area with the top of Bellavarde. The station also has two slopes to practice freeride, extreme skiing along really steep routes.

A large part of the skiers who make use of the resort come from the eastern parts of France, as well as from other countries such as Italy, Switzerland or Germany, due to its popularity and proximity to the French border. The economy of the town clearly depends on the activity of the station, with a high role of the tertiary sector.

During the Byzantine period the Emperor Justinian had a tower erected in what was to become Galata. This tower was destroyed by the Crusaders during the Sack of Constantinople in 1204.

In 1267 a Genoese colony was established in the Galata part of Constantinople. It was surrounded by walls and the Galata Tower was first built at their highest point as the Christea Turris (Tower of Christ) in Romanesque style[1][3] in 1348 during an expansion of the colony. At the time the Galata Tower, at 219.5 ft (66.9 m), was the tallest building in the city.[4]

After the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453, the Genoese colony was abolished and most of the walls of the citadel were later pulled down in the 19th century, during the northward expansion of the city in the districts of Beyoğlu and Beşiktaş; though small parts of the Genoese walls in Galata have survived.[5][6][7] The tower was allowed to survive and was turned into a prison. It was from its roof that, in 1638, Hezarfen Ahmed Çelebi supposedly strapped on wings and made the first intercontinental flight, landing in the Doğancılar Meydanı in Üsküdar on the Asian side of the city, a story of doubtful authenticity recounted by the Ottoman travel writer, Evliya Çelebi.

From 1717, the Ottomans used the tower to look out for fires (on the Old Istanbul side of the city the Beyazıt Tower served the same function). In 1794, during the reign of Sultan Selim III, the roof was reinforced in lead and wood, but the stairs were severely damaged by a fire. Another fire damaged the building in 1831, after which further restoration work took place.

In 1875, the tower's conical roof was destroyed during a storm.[8][9] It remained without this roof for the rest of the Ottoman period but, many years later, during restoration work between 1965 and 1967, the conical roof was reconstructed.[8][9] At the same time the tower's wooden interior was replaced with a concrete structure and it was opened to the public.[10][11]

In 2020, the Tower was restored then reopened as a museum now open for the public and tourists.[12]

In 2023, restoration work began on the conical roof, with a focus on extending the lifecycle of the copper finial it once had as well. Other structural reinforcements were achieved on reinforced concrete elements and around the masonry walls, enabling improvements to the building's earthquake resiliency. A 3-meter-high protection tunnel was built around the tower to ensure the safety of visitors and the surrounding area. Galata Tower reopened to the visiting public on May 25, 2024, with a new visitor policy that capped visitor entry at 100 per hour.[13]

The tower is mainly popular for the 360-degree view of Istanbul visible from its observation deck.

First chronicled in 862, Belozersk was one of five original Russian towns (the other being Ladoga, Novgorod, Polotsk, and Rostov).

Umbria is an Italian region bordering Tuscany, Lazio and Le Marche. Often called the country's green heart, it’s known for its medieval hill towns, dense forests and local cuisine, particularly foraged truffles and wines. Hilltop Perugia, the regional capital, is the site of medieval Palazzo dei Priori, housing the Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria art museum. Pedestrianized Corso Vannucci is the focus of city life.

The Enchanted City is a Spanish natural area of calcareous or limestone rock formations formed over thousands of years. It is located near Valdecabras, in the municipality of Cuenca (Spain), in a wide area of pine forests in the southern part of the Cuenca mountains and at an altitude of 1,500 meters.

It was declared a Natural Site of National Interest on June 11, 1929. The action of water, wind and ice has made this karstic phenomenon possible. The heterogeneity of the rocks in terms of their morphology, chemical composition and degree of hardness is what has allowed their uneven wear by atmospheric elements, resulting in a surprising sample of picturesque art from nature itself. To the whimsical and spectacular existing formations we must add lapiaces, torques and sinkholes.

It shares these characteristics especially with "Los Callejones", a place located in the municipality of Las Majadas. Both places are part of the Serranía de Cuenca Natural Park, created by the Law of the Autonomous Community of Castilla-La Mancha 5/2007.

This statue has an inscription reading; "Erected by the Inhabitants of Hove to Commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the Accession of Queen Victoria June 20 AD 1897". Although it was ordered to commemorate the Queen's Jubilee in 1897, the statue was not completed until 1901, the year of her death.

Biarritz, Aquitaine, France.

Biarritz is a city and commune in southwestern France, located in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department, in the New Aquitaine region. It is one of the main towns of the historical province of the French Basque Country of Labort and is part of the agglomeration community of the Basque Country.

It is bordered to the west by the Cantabrian Sea, to the north and east by Anglet, to the south by Arcangues, Arbonne and Bidart, near Bayonne and 20 km from the border with Spain. At a distance of 40 km is the Spanish city of San Sebastian, developed as a spa town by Spanish royalty on the model of Biarritz. Its beaches make the city a tourist center. Surfing finds in Biarritz one of the most important points for its practice. It was originally a whaling town.

Well-known spa town since the 19th century. It was made up of a whale-fishing town when Victor Hugo "discovered" it in 1843. He already mentioned the risk of becoming a spa town. It was established as a whale fishing port from the 11th century. It consisted of two settlements: the neighborhood of the church of Saint Martin and the fishing port (Port-Vieux) defended by the castle of Belay or Ferragus. The original name of the city (in the Middle Ages) was Beariz. Its coat of arms shows a large whaling boat, which is still the symbol of the city. The population is of Basque origin, with the introduction of Gascon elements from the 14th century. Biarritz was part of Labort until 1790. The first lighthouse was built in 1650.

In the 19th century, doctors recommended sea bathing in Biarritz for its therapeutic properties. In 1854, Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III, had a palace built on the beach today known as the Hôtel du Palais. The Biarritz casino was inaugurated on August 10, 1901. The British royal family spent time in Biarritz.

Day 3 is all about my niece, Arya. It was awesome to take instant pictures of her, she was fascinated (and a little confused) with the whole process. After it ejected, she would look at it and tell me to put it back in the camera. :)
