We were quite excited to be able to try this new "Malaysian Cuisine" that appeared in Chinatown, especially after several false starts of it being closed for one-day renovations a few days after it's opening, and queues during lunchtime.

Maybe our expectations of it were too high, but our first impressions was that the coconut rice wasn't that "lemak". In other words, not rich enough in coconut milk and/or pandan leaves, or in their posh terminology, "pandanus". Aiya, call a pandan a pandan lah. The beef rendang was quite good, but wasn't that great. I think I prefer the rendang at Nelayan where the sauce is rich and unctuous. The sambal squid turned out quite well though, tender morsels of fat squid in a good tangy sambal. Julia failed the dish after tasting soggy peanuts and ikan bilis, the deep fried anchovies that are supposed to be crunchy.

Next came the "white coffee" that Old Town Kopitiam supposedly invented, so named after the White Cafe that was its birthplace, or so the story goes on the Old Town White Coffee website. One sip from both of us and our knowing glances at each other signalled, instant coffee. C'mon lah, brew the real stuff.

Our last dish was the Char Kuay Teow. They had ran out of blood cockles, or clams proclaimed the menu, even though it was a AUD2 addition to the dish. Authentic CKT comes with cockles. If you don't like it, exclude it, but perhaps in a nod to Western sensibilities, it is left out. Educate their palates I say. While the noodles and dish itself is not bad, with a faint whiff of smokiness from a hot wok, the noodles were thin, like Pad Thai noodles. Not entirely authentic, but not too bad either. And the prawns were decent sized.

The logo on the signage and menu suggests that it could be somehow related to Old Town White Coffee or Old Town Kopitiam in Malaysia. I should have asked a friendly waiter dressed in black, who i suspect might be the boss or shareholder. Then again, the service was very friendly overall.

Would we go back? Well, I'll at least give it a second chance for the curry laksa, assam laksa, chicken curry, or the nasi goreng fried rice. I didn't even manage an Ice Kacang or Cendol. Both sold out, apparently.

Cheeses being matured in the caves at Cheddar, Somerset

Some are matured here for three years!

Cheddar is trying to get the name copywrited, as in theory real Cheddar only comes from Cheddar.....but I think they may have a a bit of a fight on their hands!

'Tis a bit pongy....but really is the best Cheddar cheese!

Authentic Indonesian traditional art. Truly a vintage puppet theater show.

I forgot the local name of this delicious dish, but it consists mainly of squid rings, shrimp, raw fish (ceviche or tiradito style), clam, all made with coconut milk, fish sauce and a mix of ají (local pepper species).

Please anyone correct me if i'm wrong.

I am brazilian and we eat very well in Brazil. But Peru's cuisine is another world. You have to see it (and taste it) for yourself !!

I had a play with a polaroid land camera from the early 70's and some black and white film from the same period. Sure you can get polaroid camera now and they take good pictures, but there is something magical about the mechanical nature of the original - where springs are used to control the shutter and you have to "cock" it to take a shot...

This is a scan of a shot taken on original black and white 664 film in a 420 land camera. Tweaked a bit on Lightroom just to darken it as it took a few swings to get light working :)

I love this shot as it looks like a vintange miners maid from the mid-west during "gold rush"

William H. Johnson, Born Florence, SC 1901-

died Central Islip, NY 1970

Little Sweet, 1944, oil on paperboard, 28 x 22 in

Johnson spent decades traveling the world, searching for the authentic spirit of ordinary people from different cultures. In the late 1930s, he found what he was looking for in his own African American community.

By almost any standard, William H. Johnson (1901–1970) can be considered a major American artist. He produced hundreds of works in a virtuosic, eclectic career that spanned several decades as well as several continents. It was not until very recently, however, that his work began to receive the attention it deserves.

Born in South Carolina to a poor African-American family, Johnson moved to New York at age seventeen. Working a variety of jobs, he saved enough money to pay for an art education at the prestigious National Academy of Design. His mastery of the academy's rigorous standards gained him both numerous awards and the respect of his teachers and fellow students.

Johnson spent the late 1920s in France, absorbing the lessons of modernism. As a result, his work became more expressive and emotional. During this same period, he met and fell in love with Danish artist Holcha Krake, whom he married in 1930. The couple spent most of the '30s in Scandinavia, where Johnson's interest in primitivism and folk art began to have a noticeable impact on his work.

Returning with Holcha to the U.S. in 1938, Johnson immersed himself in the traditions of Afro-America, producing work characterized by its stunning, eloquent, folk art simplicity. A Greenwich Village resident, he became a familiar, if somewhat aloof, figure on the New York art scene. He was also a well-established part of the African-American artistic community at a time when most black artists were still riding the crest of the Harlem Renaissance.

Although Johnson enjoyed a certain degree of success as an artist in this country and abroad, financial security remained elusive. Following his wife's death in 1944, Johnson's physical and mental health declined dramatically. In a tragic and drawn-out conclusion to a life of immense creativity, Johnson spent his last twenty-three years in a state hospital on Long Island. By the time of his death in 1970, he had slipped into obscurity. After his death, his entire life's work was almost disposed of to save storage fees, but it was rescued by friends at the last moment. Over a thousand paintings by Johnson are now part of the collection of the Smithsonian Institution's Smithsonian American Art Museum.

The Smithsonian American Art Museum is the home to one of the most significant and most inclusive collections of American art in the world. Its artworks reveal America’s rich artistic and cultural history from the colonial period to today. The museum’s main building is located at Eighth and G streets N.W., above the Gallery Place/Chinatown Metrorail station. Admission is free.

The museum has been a leader in identifying and collecting significant aspects of American visual culture, including photography, modern folk and self-taught art, African American art, Latino art, and video games. The museum has the largest collection of New Deal art and exceptional collections of contemporary craft, American impressionist paintings and masterpieces from the Gilded Age. In recent years, the museum has focused on strengthening its contemporary art collection, and in particular media arts, through acquisitions, awards, curatorial appointments, endowments, and by commissioning new artworks.

Explore the sweep of the American imagination across four centuries at the nation's flagship museum for American art and craft. Dive into inspiring artworks, the reimagined collection, and an array of special exhibitions including Glenn Kaino: Bridge. Experience our offerings both online and in person at our two locations, including national educational programs, innovative research, video interviews with artists, virtual artist studio tours, lectures, audio guides, and more. Admission is always free.

Since 1968, the National Portrait Gallery has been housed in the former Patent Office building, a structure designed by Robert Mills in the neoclassical style and built between 1836-1867. This historic building, which is the third oldest government building in the city, is shared with another Smithsonian museum, the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The building's marble and granite porticos are inspired by those of the Parthenon in Athens, Greece.

An undulating steel and glass canopy wows visitors who enter the Kogod Courtyard. Inside you’ll find diners from the museum’s café, tourists soaking their weary feet in the shallow fountain running across the space, and students taking advantage of free Wi-Fi in the light and airy setting. The modern roof seals the center of the old Patent Office Building, currently shared by the National Portrait Gallery and American Art Museum. Architect Norman Foster designed the roof to have minimal impact on the building by creating a support system that prevents direct contact and weight placement on it. Unlike most of the other Smithsonian Museums located on the Mall, this gem is found in the busy Penn Quarter of downtown D.C. It is a favorite place to bring visitors, not only for the impressive courtyard space, but also for the preserved architecture of the patent offices on the top floor. Check the Smithsonian’s website for special courtyard workshops, concerts, or events. The museum is right near the Gallery Place/Chinatown Metro on the green, yellow, and red lines.

The Smithsonian American Art Museum showcases rotating exhibits, which have previously exposed visitors to work created in response to the Vietnam War, glasswork, native women artists and more. The Smithsonian American Art Museum also operates a separate branch, the Renwick Gallery, devoted to contemporary craft and decorative arts.

An Authentic Lie?

a series of images which explores and questions:

_A visual metaphor of the 'relationships' we see on Social Media

_The 'realities' we see and devour

_Are they 'truths'?

_Or perceived perfection, 'perfect' lives, a literal 'Authentic Lie?'
