Sometimes you have to take care of and pamper your inner self. A few hours of visiting the Japanese gardens strolling around on a nice day in a pretty dress does it for me! Others are there for the same reason and while passing people they have smiles on their faces and either nod or say hello. Take time to do whatever makes you feel good!

A day passes so fast that it must be weeks before I realize I still eat fast foods even though I do cook everyday. Not necessarily KFC's kind, but it's food to go, which means fast.
More often than not I miss a meal of vegetables and fish. Things that are fresh. Farm-to-fork stuff. Some foreign guys are curious about what an authentic Vietnamese meal is like when I tell them they wouldn't find it in any Vietnamese restaurant around the world. "You either cook by yourself, or sit with villagers in the countryside," I said. I missed one thing - my favorite hiding place in the middle of the bustling city. Except for the music, I like everything that smells and sounds and looks and feels purely authentic and unique here. Even their tiny sugar jar.
"Enjoy" is a strange word. Not an extravaganza, not even expensive, it is simple but just can't be bought. It has to be from somewhere inside that you didn't even know it exists. Till it comes.
Locomotive #2024 was built back in 1944 by Lima Loccomotive. I never get tired of watching the train make it's loop around Heritage Park or listening to it's whistle.
This PA-36HD was basically built straight out of the box - but the "special" thing about this model is its paint scheme: it is an authentic color version from the Dorvack TV series that has not been released officially (yet).
I found this color scheme in a (very) short scene in episode 14, showing this PA-36HD in a field camp (with 2x R2 hand lasers as armament). It never appears again, is just a still, but at last it is the proof that Powered Armors actually wear camouflage ...weird camaouflage!

Anyway, the wacky colors inspired me to build a model of this 'side role' TV star. The kit itself went through standard modifications, like opening the air intakes on the shoulders or wrapping the air hose on the right shoulder in paper tissue to give it an insulated look.
The armament became a bit of a problem, but I found a solution in my mecha junkyard: after the modification of a PA-36K "Berlon" kit into the "Guntos" kit conversion a couple of weeks ago (see there), most of the spare "Berlon"'s weapons were left over - including a long gun that is attached to the lower right arm in the original kit and has a spring mechanism to actually shoot bullets(!).
Being less voluminous than the PA-36K, I decided to adapt the long MR-99 gun as a hand weapon. I omitted the toy mechanism inside and did some modifications to make it rifle, including a nozzle brake (which is actually the engine exhaust from an 1:72 Italieri A-4M "Skyhawk") and a gun shaft wrapped in tissue to simulate a cover that reduces heat emissions (against IR detection and to prolong the barrel's life). On top, a laser pointer was added, and the magazine went to the underside of the gun. It now looks like a kind of sniper rifle.
To set the kit and its huge rifle in scene in a believable pose, I modified the hands/fingers of the standard kit to grab/hold the MR-99 gun when it is either standing upright, or to hold it in both hands for carrying and firing. The required alternative closed hand comes from a Macross Gerwalk Valkyrie by Arii in 1:100 scale - these are perfect in size and dimensions for the PA-36!
For painting I chose stock colors from Humbrol and Testors that would come close to the tones in the TV series still. I wanted to avoid mixing. The chosen colors seem to be e a bit lighter than the 'original' tones, but with weathering they'd tone down, anyway:
- Testors 1591 "Olive Green" (RAL 6003)
- Humbrol 90 "Beige Green" (color used by the RAF in early WWII)
- Humbrol 63 "Sand"
The still also became the guide for the disruptive camouflage pattern, which had to be guessed for the many invisible areas, though. In the end, however, it reminds me much of the famous Swedish "Meadows & Fields" pattern which had been applied to the Saab AJ 37 Viggen fighter aircraft and other air and ground vehicles?
The chest box was painted in Humbrol 196 "Light Grey" (instead of pure White, which would have looked too bright and clean). Since all PA-36HD's I have seen so far have a colored stripe on the in- and outsides of their lower legs, I added such an element in Light Grey on this one, too, even though it gets lost in the disruptive pattern and the dirt.
The joints were simply painted in Gun Metal (Humbrol 53), even though the still seems to show them with the camouflage pattern.
The visor was laid out with silver and a coat of medium blue translucent paint applied over it.
Most of the decals come from the original PA-36N kit, but some elements had to be improvised. This includes the red "21" in the typical retro-SF typo, which comes from a PAM-74M stock kit (which waits for assembly and probably conversion). Being original 20 year old Gunze Sangyo decals, these were brittle and hard to apply... And the current Aoshima decals were not printed cleanly, too. :(
The badge on the right knee is a 1:72 emblem from a German WWII airplane, it comes from a small German decal specialist (Peddinghaus Decals). The chevrons (rank markings?) are hand-cut, the small nose art is a 1:87 scale graffiti from a model railroad accessory decal sheet. Small, but gives it a personal touch, and I have even seen PAs in the TV series with the unavoidable Playboy bunny on the bulk head!.
Finally, the kit received a thorough black ink wash, overall dry brushing with light grey, ochre (Humbrol 64 and 83) and some Gun Metal plus Olive Drab in certain areas. To give it a really worn and battered look, I sanded the surface with a very fine wet sand paper in some areas and rubbed surfaces and edges with grinded, soft pencil mine (8B - it is SO soft that you can write on glass with it!). The soft graphite creates a metallic, dark shine that looks like bare and scorched metal or grime and oil. It also points out edges and details - a nice trick if you want to give a stock toy a worn look. Finally, a matte varnish coat protects the whole surface, since the soft pencil dust is very touchy.
The MR-99 hand gun was painted in overall Humbrol 32 (Dark Grey), and then weathered with Light Grey (Humbrol 64) and some Gun Metal, too. The barrel isolation was painted in Ochre (Humbrol 83), then received a black ink wash, and was finally dry-painted in 83 again. The nozzle also received the pencil mine treatment.
