The Northern Lights/Aurora Borealis. What a great night, eventually went to bed at 0345hrs! Taken across the field at our back door. I really should make the effort and visit Balgavies Loch and get reflections in the water too.
We went back out tonight. Got a few nice shots before the clouds rolled in. The official activity level was "5," which indicates a "geomagnetic storm."
I will be heading back out to Norway and Sweden next January and February so if anyone is interested in a trip to shoot the Auroras and wonderful landscapes of this stunning area send me a Flickr mail and I will get back to you with details.
I was a little disappointed with our views of this week's northern lights display. Without a cellphone camera, it was pretty much a faint glow in distance, a far cry from what I seen south and west of here. This was actually taken the following night and is heavily edited to bring out any details. No beautiful red or pinks here, but interesting nonetheless the less. My biggest thrill was catching a Starlilnk satellite array, that was even more awesome. Should of took a video of that but I was so surprised the thought never entered my mind...

A backpacking trip turned into an unforgettable moment when the night sky caught fire with green. The crazy part is that we were the only backpackers in this part of Lake Superior Provincial Park. We had this unspoiled view all to ourselves. (Explored # 364) www.rossellet.com
One of the most awesome show I have attended... I love Northern Lights... :-)

Had this season’s first experience with the auroras last night, and what a show we got! In this picture I think it looks like the auroras are forming an angel in the sky. No wonder that back in the days some people thought that the auroras were spirits flying over the sky! This one is best seen in large and on black background, all comments and favs are greatly appreciated! Have a nice weekend folks!

View on black please!
If you think that the aurora is just green, then think again. There are a whole multitude of colours found in the northern lights, with green simply being the most commonly seen. Here you can see quite a spectrum above Jökulsárlón ice lagoon in southern Iceland.
Heading back to Iceland in two weeks with Greg Annandale and we'll be meeting up with one of my photographic heros, Dave Morrow.

The last Arctic trip was probably the best in terms of consistent evenings filled with aurora and clear skies I have had in many trips over the last few years. This solar storm was the result of a large solar flare on the sun, a flare that actually exploded as we made our way to the airport in the early hours of the morning on the 23rd January.
I was immediately getting excited and planning a location to ensure we got to clear skies to witness this event. We headed straight for the Lofoten Islands only to find the weather was looking too unpredictable so grabbed a few hours sleep before heading straight into Sweden to an incredible frozen forest. Some of the auroral formations and patterns were fantastic here, I spent ages trying to find relationships between the needles and needle type tree tops but this was the best burst I saw all evening for shape and structure.
It was stupendously cold here, the temperature hit -35C but it was worth it for the incredible display, crystal clear skies and the images we managed during the few daylight hours the next day.
Cant wait to do this all again in just two weeks time!

Always wish to capture aurora borealis when traveling to the northern part of Norway during winter. No guarantee but a fair chance.
Not the most spectacular shot I made, but the one I like the most.
An unexpected combination of Aurora Australis and a storm in the distance. I never thought i'd see the auroras where I live, but have been so lucky to capture them both in the last 3 months..
This is an image from a few of years ago in Norway.
I am taking a small group back out to the Lofoten Islands in early February next winter and have a couple of places left anyone interested in joining us could send me a Flickrmail and I will give you more info on the trip.
