Augmented Reality, or AR, is a general term for manipulating our experience of the world around us with technology. Today it means pointing your smartphone camera at a restaurant and getting reviews. Tomorrow it might mean complete immersion into a customizable version of reality via 3D stereoscopic camera/video headsets.

After selecting one of the overlayed icons, if there is more than one thing to choose from, the app displays a scrolling list of choices. In this instance I think I pressed the ".me" one. Selecting an option then takes you to a new overlay.

Testing a augmented reality marketing campaign on web. In my hand I'm holding a paper with a orientation mark. Everything else is created by the web page. The 3D scenery moves as I move the paper.
To try it out, you need a web cam and Flash 10 plugin in your browser.
The bright spot is not a camera flash reflection, but a virtual sun moving over the virtual scene
This is an application for AR that's fun and helps extend the card experience. Augmented Reality has some practical applications too as demonstrated using several smartphone apps that tap this technology.
Shwarzenegger's publisher has added augmented reality to add. Arnold has strong credentials in virtual realities.
Rather similar compared to version 1.0, but a major difference is the lack of a camera. If you want to film, put a GoPro on your head. Wearable devices like these are meant as contextual tools, to provide access to the (invisible) world of data surrounding us. No camera needed for that! My guess: the camera will become a miniature detachable add-on to be worn somewhere else on your body, inobtrusively.

Using FLAR (Flash Augmented Reality) I've managed to get 2 markers reacting to one another in 3D space, in real time. The opportunities for interactive 3D animations are amazing.

When I was a kid I loved Outrun. The arcade game made me feel I was driving a real car like. Nowadays I have a real car. But the rides aren't as exciting as the virtual experience back in the days. Thanks to augmented reality, I'm now able to combine the best of both worlds!
