Of course I attended the auction on November 6. In some ways it was more painful than being there on the last night.

After all these years I finally got to go into the kitchen!

After the performance, there was an auction of the gloves that Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster wore during the show, with the proceeds going to Broadway Cares. The bidding went up to about $35,000, at which point they declared it a tie and gave each of the three bidders something.

When one can't afford the real pieces, staring at beautiful pictures quells the desire sometimes.

The only thing I bought from the Strand Bookstore (a well-known used book store in New York city) is this Pandolfini silver and jewellery auction catalog/ catalogue. Jewellery auction catalogues have little re-sale market or value. After going through the entire table for 30 minutes, I only found this one. And while other catalogues go for between USD $3 to USD $5 and up, this one is only USD $2.

Good, I like it when things are inexpensive!

Auction set up in Homesteaders (Tasty Minstrel). Who's the top guy in the wild west?

Syston Hall Lincolnshire, demolished 1925. This is the west garden front with spectacular views across the park and lake. A new house stands on the site today with some interesting architectural elements but the view is now blocked by trees. Syston hall was first built in 1760. Repairs and enlargement of the house were made as the first commission of the architect Lewis Vulliamy in 1822–24 when he added the famous library wing, which was just to the right of this picture, overlooking the same view. The Offenburg-Syston Park-Makellar copy of the Gutenberg Bible was here until it was auctioned off in 1898. One of the pages of this copy which was forged was replaced with another page from another incomplete Gutenberg Bible. In 1978, this sold for $2.2 million to the Württembergische Landesbibliothek in Stuttgart, Germany.Note the decorative row of statue busts in the foreground. The porch around the back (main entrance) by Charles Kirk was moved to Fulbeck Hall when the house was demolished.

Hong Kong Transport - Misc. Vehicles

The Hong Kong Van Culture and some oddities

Quite a number of these vehicles are listed | shown in other albums ie Trucks

This is for vehicles that do not fit into the obvious catagories such as large trucks, buses, etc and I should point out that quite a few brands that offer VANS also sell them as a CAR making it hard to categorise, Mercedes Benz, Hyundai, Toyota and Volkswagen are an example.

☛ This list of Misc. Vehicles can include:

Hearses ✚ Tow Trucks ✚ Armoured Vans ✚ Garbage Trucks ✚ Delivery Vehicles ✚ Ice Cream Vans ✚ Bucket Crane Trucks ✚ Road Cleaning Trucks ✚ Parcel Delivery Vehicles ✚ Utility Company Vehicles ✚ Medium Sized Company Vehicles ✚ Village Vehicles ( seen on our Outlying Islands ) ✚ Company Vans such as the popular Toyota Hiace + Nissan Urvan to name 2 brands ✚ Vans with NO company markings which get involved in anything and everything if you get my meaning.

☛Note that there are some oddities such as Rickshaws, Steamrollers, Diggers and Fork Lift Trucks and such

These are privately owned vehicles although a lot of vehicles are owned by companies with contracts with the Hong Kong Government.

Any Government OWNED Vehicle in this section has a licence plate starting AM

Naturally some of these vehicles have personalized licence plates which they buy at Government Auction!

The upfront writing on this window reminded me of Milwaukee and it contrasts greatly to its neighboring shops that are more tame and conservative about their presentation.

Zoute Grand Prix 2018

October 2018

Based on a FIAT Topolino and powered by a SIATA engine, the car offered here was built in 1948 by a Mr Bertolini, proprietor of a garage and body shop in Parma that made several small competition cars during the post-war period (see the book Le Sport by Curami). Needless to say, much more is known about SIATA than Mr Bertolini.

Founded in 1926 in Turin, Italy by Giorgio Ambrosini, SIATA (Societa Italiana Auto Trasformazioni Accessori) began life as a tuning firm specialising in the modification of FIATs. When the company, now renamed SIATA Auto Spa, eventually introduced its first production car in 1949, FIAT components, in this case sourced from the Topolino, were the logical choice for the new Amica cabriolet. During the 1950s and on into the '60s, a variety of US engines including Crosley, Ford, and Chrysler V8s was adopted in addition to FIAT's home-grown motors.

SIATA was active in racing from its earliest days, and a Daina Gran Sport driven by Dick Irish and Bob Fergus won its class in the inaugural Sebring 12 Hours race of 1952, finishing 3rd overall ahead of many larger-engined cars. The nimble handling of these cars was highly regarded in the USA, where many were modified to accept larger engines. SIATA was also a regular competitor in the famed Mille Miglia race in Italy.

From arguably the most evocative period of post-war sports car racing, this particular car was made in 1948 starting from a FIAT Topolino chassis frame that was modified with additional tubular reinforcement. The engine is a SIATA 750 Type B fitted with Weber carburettors DR32, aluminium oil sump and inclined exhaust. The car was sold to Mr Musa, a gentleman driver from Parma, and entered in the 1948 Mille Miglia, Mr Musa's co-driver being one E Maestri. They hit trouble during the race and did not finish. Later in 1948 the car was given to Mr Giuseppe Gilera, founder of the eponymous motorcycle company. Mr Gilera raced the car in the 1948 Coppa delle Dolomiti, and in 1950 it participated in several races including the Parma-Berceto. On the Italian registration documents we can trace changes of ownership in 1968, 1985 and 2012. It was around that time that this SIATA was completely restored by the famous KCA workshop in Milan, the engine being rebuilt by the renowned specialist, Facetti. The restoration was finished in 2013. Guaranteed entry into the Mille Miglia Storica, this charming little Italian sports car comes with continuous history since 1948 and a large book of photos and original documents including copies its old Italian registration papers.

(Joyner Spring Auction of Important Canadian Art - November 22nd, 1988)

Painted circa 1923-1924.

In 1935 Vincent Massey was appointed High Commissioner for Canada in London. The Massey’s collection of Canadian paintings, including Lake Superior III, accompanied them to the official residence in Hyde Park Gardens. Hubbard writes that in 1938 “Canadian art received an important showing at the Tate Gallery, London, the first occasion on which recognition was given to our earlier art. A number of the Massey pictures were included in the modern section of the exhibition.”

Paul Duval, in an essay in the catalogue of the 1963 Harris retrospective, states: “Harris found a new and heady creative wine in the rockscapes of the north shore of Lake Superior. His mind and eye responded eagerly to the uninhabited spaces and the endless curtain of silver sky.” He continues: “Out of the seemingly unpromising material of Lake Superior’s barren rock and open sky and withered trees, Harris composed a number of masterpieces. In painting them, he cast aside colour almost completely and abolished surface textures from his canvases. He had found that shapes on the Superior shore stood our starkly in the crisp air and he drew their hard contours with an unrelenting respect.” Duval concludes that “remote and pristine are words that ideally describe the best of the Lake Superior canvases... (they) remain compositions of impressive power and startling originality... “

Dennis Reid, commenting on the works which Harris painted from his trips to the North Shore from 1921-24, points out that the artist “produced a long series of monumental canvases during these years. The North Shore seemed to trigger a rich and deep response in him... Some of his very finest canvases are the result of these later trips to Lake Superior.”

Jeremy Adamson, in his chapter on the Lake Superior works, observes that the “canvases of stark, wilderness landscapes made from sketches along the North Shore between 1922 and 1924 are among Harris’ most powerful compositions.”

The oil sketch for this canvas is in the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, Kleinburg. Today, very few large canvases from this period of Harris’ career remain in private collections.

On June 1st, 1999, Joyner Canadian Fine Art sold Lake Superior III for $1,056,000, a new auction record for a work by Lawren Harris at auction. Additionally, the painting became the first Canadian work of art to fetch more than one million dollars at auction.
