The slaves that came into Fredericksburg were sold from this spot. They would be told to stand on the upper level and auctioned off to the highest bidder.
Much of America's treatment of slaves is airbrushed out of American history. Many people owned them but in historic buildings they're described as servants.
Incidentally the damage to the auction block is recent. It was attacked last year. No one knows who did it.

It is ironic that I only recently showed a photo of this old bit of stone as a symbul of how our priorities have changed. Now it has returned to become a focal point of anger over generations of injustice. Whether or not this is a "slave auction block" is as doubtful as it is unimportant . As a tangible symbol of the past it has once again become a reminder of the past and of how the past is not really past at all.

I have entered this image in to the Flickr group Charity Print Auctions:
www.flickr.com/groups/charityprintauctions/
for the Haiti Earthquake Appeal.
The print that is for auction is 30x30cm (12x12 in). It will be printed by a pro lab on Fuji DP Professional paper in lustre finish...
To bid, you need to comment below the image with the amount that you would like to bid.
When the auction closes, the person that has bid the most, wins the print.
The auction will close on Friday 22nd January 2010 at midnight GMT time...
The winning bidder has to pay that amount to the Red Cross:
www.redcross.org.uk/emergencysite/default.aspx?id=88916
When they do this, they MUST make a screen grab of the donation confirmation page to send to the photographer. This is the only way the photographer knows that you have paid and can arrange for the print to be sent to you.
I hope you will be many to bid. It is a small price to pay compared to those who have lost everything. To the winner if there is a photo in my stream that you prefer I will have that one sent to you...
If you do not have a Flickr account, please email your bid to me: oriche (at) yahoo.com and I will place a bid on your behalf.
Many thanks in advance...
