Info from Wikipedia
Percé Rock (French Rocher Percé, "pierced rock") is a huge sheer rock formation in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence on the tip of the Gaspé Peninsula in Quebec, Canada, off Percé Bay. Percé Rock appears from a distance like a ship under sail. It is one of the world's largest natural arches located in water and is considered a geologically and historically rich natural icon of Quebec. It is a major attraction in the Gaspesie region.
The massive rocky cliff is called by several names, such as le Rocher Percé, Pierced Rock, Pierced Island, Split Rock or Percé Rock. The name is attributed to the pierced rock that formed an arch 15 metres (49 ft) high on its seaward southern end, as though a needle had cut through the rock.It was named Percé ("pierced rock") by Samuel de Champlain in 1607, in reference to the holes he had seen in the massive block of limestone, which over the years has become a major attraction in the region of Quebec.
The Percé Rock, described as "the monstrous giant; pierced through by an immense eye, now green, now gray, now blue or violet, according to the moods of the sea", is linked in legend to a young man of a noble French family.
Another version of the legend, which is also narrated by the local people of Percé town, is that they see the rock in the shape of a "phantom" during storms and hence call it "Le Génie deľisle Percé". This, however, could be interpreted to mean that the vapoury clouds that engulf the "vast flocks of water fowl" could give such an impression when viewed from a distance.

Built at a cost of $50,000, the 100 foot Blagen Block is the last remaining example of the rhythmic rows of columns and arches that once united hundreds of block fronts on Portland’s streets. Pattern and detail on the front façade and in the arcade include acanthus leaves, stars and stripes, arrows, and laurel leaves. Bracketed scrolls above the capitals are topped by projecting lions’ heads, a favorite ornament in buildings of the time. This building is also an example of the “T” style shoulder arches, popular for their compact stacking and ease of storage when constructing in a bustling city. Another advantage was less chance of warping and shrinkage that could result from larger “single pour” arches. The manufacturer is unknown but the components resemble those made by Willamette Iron Works.
The Dolmen de Kermario at the side of the alignments of Kermario, one of the three major groups of stone rows at the megalithic sites of Carnac, Brittany, France
Some background information:
The Carnac stones are an exceptionally dense collection of megalithic sites near the south coast of Brittany in in the French department of Morbihan. They consist of stone alignments, dolmens (stone tombs), tumuli (burial mounds) and single menhirs (standing stones). More than 3,000 prehistoric standing stones were hewn from local granite and erected by the pre-Celtic people of Brittany and form the largest such collection in the world. Most of the stones are within the Breton municipality of Carnac, but some to the east are within neighboring La Trinité-sur-Mer. The stones were erected at some stage during the Neolithic period, probably around 3300 BC, but some may date to as early as 4500 BC.
There are three major groups of stone rows – Ménec, Kermario and Kerlescan, which altogether are known as the alignments of Carnac. Another much smaller group of stones, the Petit-Ménec alignments, can be found in the neigbouring village of La Trinité-sur-Mer. These four groups may have once formed a single group but have been split up as stones were removed for other purposes. The standing stones are made of weathered granite from local outcroppings that once extensively covered the area.
The Ménec alignments near the village of Le Ménec consist of eleven converging rows of menhirs stretching for 1,165 by 100 metres (3,822 by 328 feet). At either end the remains of stone circles can still be seen. The largest stones, around 4 metres (13 feet) high, are at the wider, western end. The stones then become as small as 0.6 metres (2 feet 0 inches) high along the length of the alignment before growing in height again toward the extreme eastern end.
The Kermario alignments consists of 1029 stones in ten columns, about 1,300 m (4,300 feet) in length. At their eastern end, where the stones are shorter, a stone circle was revealed by aerial photography. The Kerlescan alignments are a smaller group of 555 stones, further to the east of the other two sites. They are composed of 13 lines with a total length of about 800 metres (2,600 feet), ranging in height from 80 cm (2 feet 7 inch) to 4 m (13 feet). At the extreme west, where the stones are tallest, there is another stone circle which has 39 stones.
There are several dolmens scattered around the area, like the one of Kermario in this picture. These dolmens are generally considered to have been tombs. However, the acidic soil of Brittany has eroded away the bones. They were constructed with several large stones supporting a capstone, then buried under a mound of earth. In many cases, the mound is no longer present, sometimes due to archeological excavation, and only the large stones remain, in various states of ruin.
At the end of the 18th century, the alignments of Carnac were attributed to druidic gatherings. But just a few years later, it was claimed that they represent stars in the sky. A later theory from 1887 argued for a connection between the rows of stones and the directions of sunsets at the solstices. More recent studies assume an astronomical purpose or support the concept of a geometric megalithic yard. However, the most modern theory suggests that the stone rows belonged to some kind of defensive structure against preternatural menaces originating from the nearby sea. Anyway, a generally valid theory regarding the purpose of the alignments has not been agreed on yet.
Since 1996, the alignments of Carnac – or to be more precise – the Ménec alignments are part of the UNESCO tenative list, a list of worldwide architectural and cultural heritage sites, which are considered to become UNESCO world heritage sites sometime. If you plan a visit there, please be aware that Carnac can be overcrowded by tourists at certain hours of the day. There are also several touristic offers of clever tradespeople that cost money. However, you can still eplore the alignments on your own, although it’s no longer possible to stroll around between the stone rows as they are protected from regardless visitors by having been fenced in for quite some time.
Sephirot [or "enumerations", Sephiroth, Sefiroth (סְפִירוֹת), singular: Sephirah, also Sefirah (סְפִירָה "enumeration" in Hebrew)], in the Kabbalah of Judaism, are the ten attributes that God (who is referred to as אור אין סוף Aur Ain Soph, "Limitless Light, Light Without End") created through which he can manifest not only the physical but the metaphysical universe.
Through a careful study of the Tanakh, Jewish sages identified ten Sephirot (ten being the number of divine perfection) known by the following names/characteristics from highest to lowest:
1. Keter - Divine Plan/Creator/infinite light/Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh - I AM THAT I AM (Supreme/Total Consciousness)
2. Chokmah - Divine Reality/revelation/Yesh me-ayin - being from nothingness (Power of Wisdom)
3. Binah - Understanding/repentance/reason (Power of Love)
4. Chesed - Mercy/Grace/Love of (intention to emulate) God (Power of Vision)
5. Gevurah - Judgment/strength/determination (Power of Intention)

During Krishna Janmashtami celebrations in India, young boys partake in a cherished tradition of adorning blue paint to emulate Lord Krishna, a revered deity in Hindu mythology. Lord Krishna, often depicted with blue skin, represents divinity, compassion, and playfulness. His birth anniversary, Janmashtami, is marked by various rituals and festivities, including reenactments of his life events.
Krishna's mythology is rich with tales of his divine exploits, teachings, and playful antics as a cowherd in Vrindavan. He is celebrated for his wisdom, compassion, and unwavering devotion to righteousness, as depicted in sacred texts like the Bhagavad Gita and the Bhagavata Purana. Through Janmashtami celebrations and practices like wearing blue paint, devotees reaffirm their connection to Lord Krishna and seek to embody his virtues of love, devotion, and righteousness in their own lives.

"I must go down to the sea again, for the call of the running tide, it's a wild call that may not be denied." John Masefield.
Many are the natural beauties that can be found in County Donegal. Mountains, waterfalls, cliffs, and also some of the most amazing beaches in Ireland. "Murder Hole Beach" is perhaps the most impressive of the entire Emerald Isle. The origin of its dramatic name dates back to the nineteenth century, and has different legends behind it, one of the most accepted being the one that attributes it to the danger of entering its waters.
During our visit, on a September afternoon, the wind was blowing hard and large waves were crashing hard over and over against the shore. An amazing natural spectacle, which totally justified the name of this location. Photographing this place in the middle of the afternoon was a challenge, despite the promising sky conditions, we did not have time to stay until sunset. For this reason, I had to wait for the clouds to cover the sun that was located on the beach, since its strong light generated horrible shadows in the scene. Once I got it, I quickly used a neutral density filter to create a long exposure that reflected the dynamism of the water. The figure of a person on the beach helps to give scale to this immense and wild landscape, which keeps calling me to return and photograph it again at sunset.

Easing through Lake Superior & Ishpeming-controlled Empire Jct., Canadian National Train U74281-14 (Unit ore loads, Empire Mine, Palmer, Mich.–Escanaba, Mich.) is on the dynamics as it begins the nocturnal trip through Upper Peninsula Michigan back to Escanaba.
The train's 99 loads – all Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range 24-foot ore jennies in the twilight of their 59-year careers – were loaded at Empire Mine, an open-pit mine that was closed in August 2016 by owner Cliffs Natural Resources of Cleveland, Ohio. Cliffs attributed the closing of the mine to the depletion of high-value ore, a condition that no doubt was augmented by tumbling ore prices and falling revenues across the marketspace.

I know it's totally unfair to attribute human thoughts and feelings onto an animal, but (chuckling) I couldn't help but see pure avarice on this little weasel's face.... definitely determination.
He is getting closer to the suet, but as he absolutely cannot get his claws to grip the hard bone surface of this caribou antler, neither can he grip securely enough to make the small leap to the suet.
Naqsh-e Rajab III, is the secund of the 3 investiture relief attributed to the sasanian king Ardashir Ist. Its execution is less plane than the previous pedestrian investiture at Firuzabad II (on Bijan's stream) , but the volume is less marked than on later reliefs such as Naqsh-e Rostam I. The image is still very static, sign that at the begining of the sasanian dynasty, the carving style is still very influenced by the parthian, as also testify the type of baggy trousers looking exactly like the parthian ones (see this parthian relief at behistun on Bijan's stream ). The scene shows 8 characters with a nearly symmetric and isocephalic disposition (heads on the same level, as opposed to the usual upper disposition of the king’s head on Sasanian reliefs). At the center of the scene, the king gets the power ring (the farshiang) from the hand of god Ahuramazda, king and divinity facing each other. The god has his typical creneled crown and hold into his left hand his barsom (stick , symbol of divine power) the king puts his hand in front of his mouth, as a sign of respect to the god, 2nd finger curved forward. The farshiang is ornamented with 2 ribbons, drawing Ardashir’s symbol (a 2 ribboned circle) that can be also seen on his horse on the relief of his equestrian victory over Artabanus at Firuzabad I. 2 little characters can be seen down the feets of either the king and the god: A child being probably Bahram Ist, son of Shapur and grandson of Ardashir, and a bearded naked figure armed with a bludgeon being probably Herakles (religious syncretism occurred in iran between greek god Herakles and Iranian god Verethragna). Other signs of Greek influence can be seen on many sasanian reliefs through by example the representatuions of Niké, winged victories (see Taq-e bostan on Bijan's stream, or Bishapur III on Rob's stream). Behind the king, a servant and the prince Shapur, future king can be seen. prince Shapur pays respect to his father with his curved finger in front of the mouth, the servant holds an object that can be either an umbrella, a flag, or a stick to protect the king from the flies. Both of them hyde their left hand into their shirt's sleeve as it was already a custom during the achaemenian era when meeting the king. Behind the god, 2 womens are shown separated from the scene by a column, not paying attention to the investiture as they look in the opposed direction. These characters are probably the queen and a servant, first representation of women on the Iranian reliefs since the elamite time (see Eshkaft-e salman’s reliefs at Izeh).
Taken at Naqsh-e Rajab, viscinity of Marvdasht, Fars province, Iran, April 2008.

This "photographic story" ideally follows the previous one, for two reasons, first because in this case too, as in the previous story we talk about "angels", they are the "Golden Angels" of San Pier Niceto (in the province of Messina), and second, because this singular and beautiful religious festival, with its procession, also takes place during the Easter period, specifically during "Holy Tuesday". The photographs that I post (not a few, I wish in this way to pay homage to the inhabitants of San Pier Niceto, who can find themselves in these photos, especially for those fathers, mothers, grandfathers, grandmothers, aunts and uncles, in seeing their beloved and very sweet "angels - angiolette"); if you look closely at some of the photographed subjects, you will notice a "temporal disconnect", in fact in some cases, the same girls are present, with two different ages, they will be dressed differently, this is because the photos were taken during Holy Tuesday of 2024 and that of 2025. The temporal sequence of the photographs does not take into account either the year in which they were taken, nor the moments attributable to the phases of the ceremony and subsequent procession.
In San Pier Niceto, on the Peloritani Mountains in Sicily, during the Holy Tuesday takes place the SS. Crucifix procession, whose roots are ancient. The Church of St. James houses and cares for the precious Crucifix, Which is brought to the procession by the streets of the country preceded by very young children, of both sexes, who imitate little Angels, Angels and Grieving young Nuns, dressed in elaborate dresses covered with many gold jewelery, sewn by handy hands that with pins, necklaces , Bracelets and many other gold jewelry applied to their little clothes, they make real works of art whose designs are reminiscent of Easter symbols. Gold for dressing is collected home from home by people who have to melt a "vote", gold that will be returned at the end of the procession. Everything begins during Lent when parents decide to dress their baby by little Angels, Angels or Grieving Nuns .The Little Angels are usually 3 or 4 year olds, the Angels are a little bigger, the Nuns are little young girls. Thus the preparations for the elaboration of the elaborate clothes begin: Parents during Lent are knocking at every door of the country, among friends and relatives, to borrow bracelets, brooches, necklaces and all the gold necessary for the composition of embroidery . The Little Angel's dress is white, short down to the knee, made up of a gold-plated bodice and a skirt with some golden embroidery; Arms are adorned by bracelets, the head is adorned by a collier, small wings (white dove feathers) sprout from behind. The Angels have a white tunic, on which sacred icons are embroidered in gold, the head is covered by a collier, wings lie on their shoulders. The Nun's dress is black, on which are stitched the crowns of the S.S. Rosary, on the head is placed a white veil, held by a rose crown. At 16:30 on Holy Tuesday, a tapping of bells together with the band's fanfare in the village, set off at the "Crucifixion Procession" of San Pier Niceto: at the foot of the Crucifix there are red roses, behind it are located branches of cypress (at the end of the event the faithful will carry with them a piece of cypress as a relic), finally the red ribbons are tied to the arms of the Crucifix, they will mark the procession of the procession until the arrival at the Mother Church, a century church to St. Peter the Apostle, where the celebration of the Holy Mass will take place (the reverse path will bring the SS Crucifix to the Church of St. James): in perfect order the faithful in religious silence, with votive candles in their hands, walk the streets of the country never crossing the red ribbons as they delimit the path of the Golden Little Angels, Angels and the Grieving young Nuns .

Jeepneys are iconic Filipino minibuses, born from WWII surplus U.S. jeeps. Customized with bright colors and local flair, they became vital public transport across the country. Privately owned and low-cost, jeepneys serve millions daily. While they symbolize Filipino creativity and culture, they also face challenges as the government pushes for modernization to address pollution and safety concerns.
Sari-sari stores are tiny, community-rooted shops found across the Philippines, from urban Manila to remote villages. They offer daily essentials in small, affordable quantities—like single shampoo sachets, candies, instant noodles, or even individual cigarettes—making them accessible to all income levels and a vital part of everyday life.
My friend Pablo lent me this camera, which is a beast in more than one sense (quality and size, to mention two attributes of such bestiality).
On Sunday we went out with my kids to test it and learn how to use it (Marga has the wrapping of an easter egg on her hands). I made all possible mistakes because that's what happens when a camera is bestial and unknown (I am very inexperienced with inverted finders, and that's where most of my concentration went). While I was making these mistakes, I thought aloud a concept that my daughter found intriguing - that each photo was "expensive". She inquired and I explained that this was because they are so big, there are only 10 of them in a roll.
In the end I could make a couple of the expensive pictures. In order for them to be both expensive and good, I would have to practice more.
Oh, the camera is called Mamiya RZ67 Professional II (with the amazing Mamiya Sekor W 110mm f/2.8 lens, which would be something like 55mm f/1.4 in 35mm terms. Film is Fuji Pro 400H).
"Porbandar, Gujarat 1983 - Tailor carries his sewing machine through monsoon floodwaters - Steve McCurry
On the Monsoons - I did a story on the monsoon. One of the dramatic things of the monsoon season is there’s an incredible heat build up. The wind blows, the dust storms come up. So the monsoon is a relief.
I was in the city of Porbandar photographing the monsoon during one of the floods and I was up to my chest in the water. As I was wading through the streets I saw this man walking down with a sewing machine on his shoulder and it seemed so odd and so surreal.
Everyone started alerting this man that there’s a photographer around, and telling him to smile for the camera. He has this rusted sewing machine which is from his shop and it’s destroyed and yet he’s up to his neck in the water with this smile. The best part of the story was that the German manufacturer of the machine saw this picture and tracked him down and sent him a new sewing machine."
I did not take this picture. It was sent to me via e-mail this morning. It and the accompanying poem are attributed to LCDR Jeff Giles, SC, USN.
The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,
I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.
My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,
My daughter beside me, angelic in rest.
Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,
Transforming the yard to a winter delight.
The sparkling lights in the tree I believe,
Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve.
My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,
Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep.
In perfect contentment, or so it would seem,
So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.
The sound wasn't loud, and it wasn't too near,
But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear.
Perhaps just a cough, I didn't quite know, Then the
sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow.
My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear,
And I crept to the door just to see who was near.
Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night,
A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight.
A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old,
Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold.
Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled,
Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child.
'What are you doing?' I asked without fear,
'Come in this moment, it's freezing out here!
Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve,
You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!'
For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift,
Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts.
To the window that danced with a warm fire's light
Then he sighed and he said 'Its really all right,
I'm out here by choice. I'm here every night.'
'It's my duty to stand at the front of the line,
That separates you from the darkest of times.
No one had to ask or beg or implore me,
I'm proud to stand here like my fathers before me.
My Gramps died at ' Pearl on a day in December,'
Then he sighed, 'That's a Christmas 'Gram always remembers.'
My dad stood his watch in the jungles of ' Nam ',
And now it is my turn and so, here I am.
I've not seen my own son in more than a while,
But my wife sends me pictures, he's sure got her smile.
Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag,
The red, white, and blue... an American flag.
I can live through the cold and the being alone,
Away from my family, my house and my home.
I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet,
I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat.
I can carry the weight of killing another,
Or lay down my life with my sister and brother..
Who stand at the front against any and all,
To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall.'
' So go back inside,' he said, 'harbor no fright,
Your family is waiting and I'll be all right.'
'But isn't there something I can do, at the least,
'Give you money,' I asked, 'or prepare you a feast?
It seems all too little for all that you've done,
For being away from your wife and your son.'
Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret,
'Just tell us you love us, and never forget.
To fight for our rights back at home while we're gone,
To stand your own watch, no matter how long.
For when we come home, either standing or dead,
To know you remember we fought and we bled.
Is payment enough, and with that we will trust,
That we mattered to you as you mattered to us.'

Mammoth Hot Springs are a surficial expression of the deep volcanic forces at work in Yellowstone. Although these springs lie outside the caldera boundary, their energy is attributed to the same magmatic system that fuels other Yellowstone thermal areas. Hot water flows from Norris to Mammoth along a fault line roughly associated with the Norris to Mammoth road. (Courtesy : yellowstone.net/)

I'm not really wild about the Winter light around here—lots of overcast grays. I used to joke that "there's nothing out there to see in the Winter," but people take it seriously and lecture me about it. It's just a joke, like the old line that, when you're photographing with a heavy view camera, there are no pictures more than thirty steps from the trunk of the car. (I first heard that attributed to Edward Weston, but who knows. Variations of it have been around forever and I've seen it attributed to many people.) Anyway, I've been taking random still lifes [sic] around the house as a way of unlimbering the camera and fiddling around with it.
I noticed the light on the soap and went and retrieved the camera and tripod. It was almost dark when I took this—note the shutter speed.

The idea of reconstruction and restoration of the old buildings of the Inner Püspökkert/Bishop's Garden is attributed to the Bishop of Veszprém of that time, Baron Károly Hornig (1840-1917). The bishop commissioned the Budapest-based architect, Henrik Schmahl (1846-1912) with the design of the building for the administration of the bishop's estate. The plans were finished in the summer of 1899, and the ornate building designed in Eclectic Style was completed at the end of 1901. Consecration took place 2 February 1902. The Episcopal Estate Administration Building was nationalised after 1945. It was used as a youth centre until 1948 and then as a civil servants' club.
At the end of the 1940s, the Eötvös Károly County Library occupied a large part of the palace. Other offices were also moved here. In 1997 the building was renovated and modernised, and a new wing was added on the opposite side not apparent here. The whole complex is now serves as the Eötvös Károly County Library, and this view definitely represents Henrik Schmahl's original designs.

The eurasian jay is a widely dispersed species spanning much of the Eurasian continents including northern Africa. The territory is so vast in fact that eight distinct racial groups have developed giving this group of animals very different physical attributes. Here is a portait from the leucotis group of eurasian jays.
Baseco, once an industrial dockyard, is now a dense urban settlement where 60,000 people live on reclaimed land. It reflects a broader Philippine trend: rural workers migrate to cities like Manila seeking opportunity, but face overcrowding and poor infrastructure. Baseco symbolizes how the promise of urban life collides with precarity—yet also with resilience and community.
The Akha people, an indigenous hill tribe in northern Thailand, have distinct and colorful dress traditions that reflect their cultural identity. Akha women often wear vibrant, intricately adorned attire that varies based on age, marital status, and ceremonial occasions.
Their traditional clothing includes a headdress adorned with silver coins, beads, and decorative elements symbolizing their cultural beliefs. The headdress's design and ornamentation may signify different stages of life or marital status. For instance, unmarried women might wear headdresses with decorative elements that cover their ears, while married women often wear head coverings with silver ornamentation shaped like horns or wings.
Akha women's attire typically consists of long-sleeved jackets, often red or indigo, adorned with elaborate embroidery and patterns. They pair these jackets with wraparound skirts or pants adorned with detailed needlework or embellishments. Additionally, they wear numerous accessories, including necklaces, bracelets, and anklets made of beads, shells, and silver.
These garments and accessories are not just about aesthetics but also reflect the Akha community's identity, social standing, and cultural heritage. The attire's complexity and colors signify various aspects of their lives, beliefs, and roles within the community, making it a significant aspect of their cultural expression and traditions.
