Le porte-aéronefs HMS ILLUSTRIOUS (R06) est la deuxième unité de la classe Invincible.

 

Commandé le 14 mai 1976, sa mise sur cale est effectuée le 7 octobre 1976 par Swan Hunter sur la rivière Tyne. Lancé et baptisé par la princesse Margaret le 1er décembre 1981, ses finitions sont accélérées et il est réceptionné le 20 juin 1982 alors qu'il se rend à Portsmouth pour recevoir ses dotations et partir pour les Malouines, où il arrive le 28 août ; il est définitivement armé après son retour, le 20 mars 1983.

 

Il mesure 206,3 x 36 m hors tout et déplace 20 000 t en pleine charge. Ses 2 hélices entraînées par 4 turbines à gaz Rolls-Royce Olympus TM3B (96 000 cv) permettent 28 n ; la machinerie comprend également 8 groupes électrogènes diesel Paxman et son rayon d'action est de 5 000 milles à 18 n. Son autodéfense est assurée par un lanceur double Sea Dart et 2 CIWS Phalanx de 6 x 30mm. Le pont d'envol de 167,6 x 17 m possède une rampe à 6,5°, 2 ascenseurs de 16,66 x 9,65 m qui mènent à un hangar de 152,4 de long par 12,2 à 22,6 m de large et 6,1 m de haut.

Sa capacité est de 8 Harrier et 10 hélicoptères. Il est équipé d'un radar 3D Type 1022, un Type 909 pour les lanceurs, un Type 992 air et surface, un Type 1006 de navigation et un sonar Type 184. L'équipage et d'environ 700 marins pour le bateau et 350 pour le groupe aérien.

 

Son port d'attache est Portsmouth. En 1993, les Phalanx sont remplacés par 3 Goalkeeper de 7x30 mm et 2 × Canon de 20 mm GAM-B01, le tremplin est allongé et passe à 12°, la surface du pont d'envol est augmentée et la longueur totale du bateau devient 209 m, les Sea Dart sont débarqués, la capacité passe à 10 Harrier et 12 Sea King et celle en hébergement à +120, le radar 992 est remplacé par un Type 996 et le sonar par un Type184. Il participe aux opérations Southern Watch en Iraq, à Deny Flight en Bosnie et à Palliser en Sierra Leone en 2000. Il bénéficie d'une modernisation de 2003 à 2005. En 2006, il assiste les Britanniques au Liban. A partir de 2010, il n'embarque plus que des hélicoptères. Il est désarmé le 28 août 2014. Vendu, il quitte Portsmouth le 7 décembre 2016, remorqué jusqu'en Turquie où il est démantelé.

 

Il est vu ici le 30 juin 2005. A noter à bâbord arrière l'échancrure dans le pont d'envol et le Goalkeeper installé sur son sponçon.

HMAS Toowoomba conducted Exercise Scimitar Exocet with Turkish warships TCG Barbaros (FFH) and TCG Yarbay Kudret Gungor AORH). The exercise was conducted in the Bab Al Mandeb Strait.

HMAS Toowoomba has successfully concluded command of a multi-national exercise with Turkish Navy vessels and French Mirage fighters, contributing to maritime security in the Bab El Mandeb Strait, in the Middle East.

 

Exercise Scimitar Exocet was conducted between the 22nd and 23rd of July 2011 in the vicinity of the Gulf of Aden and involved Toowoomba, two Turkish Navy vessels and French Mirage fighter aircraft.

 

Commanding Officer of HMAS Toowoomba, Commander Andrew Quinn, said the exercise proved the Royal Australian Navy’s interoperability with the Turkish Navy against an air-borne attack exercise.

 

HMAS Toowoomba is presently deployed in support of Op SLIPPER in the Middle East Area of Operations (MEAO), operating as part of the Combined Maritime Force (CMF).

 

The CMF mission includes maritime security operations in the Gulf region, the maritime environment around the Horn of Africa, and counter piracy/terrorism operations in the Gulf of Aden.

 

As the 26th rotation of an RAN vessel to the MEAO, Toowoomba has been on patrol supporting the CMF mission since the 2nd of June 2011.
