Alongside building the sellers made the most of the smallest spaces. Some spaces little bigger than a meter square where artfully piled with goods. Along this road where also a number of stalls piled high with books. I found the correct one a friend had asked for and also got myself a new Salman Rushdie book. Both around a pound each, and a very friendly stall owner.

Boarding team members from the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Bertholf work to retrieve bales of contraband from the water that were thrown overboard by suspected smugglers in January 2015. The suspected smugglers were intercepted by Bertholf during a routine patrol in the Eastern Pacific during their recent deployment off the coast of Central America in support of Joint Interagency Task Force South counter-narcotics operations. During the deployment, Bertholf’s crew detected and boarded a number of suspicious vessels, locating and seizing more than 2,600 pounds of illegal narcotics and detaining a number of individuals suspected of smuggling. These kids shaved their heads for Neptune Day, the day that we commemorated crossing the equator (even though we had actually crossed it over a week earlier, before arriving in Brazil). Apparently an ancient maritime tradition, all of us "pollywogs" were initiated as "shellbacks" by having fish guts poured on us, after which we kissed 2 big dead fish and the ring of Neptune, who was actually our captain dressed in white skirts and painted green. After that, a bunch of people shaved their heads and donated their hair to Locks of Love (no, I didn't).

Saturday afternoon on board the vessel is pizza day, and everyone tries where possible to come in early for lunch. The chefs do an amazing job and keep the pizzas coming. I definitely felt stuffed today!
