12 Feb tonight Sutlej Mess 9.30pmI -----------noted journalist, the Dawn .
Yesterday, Egypt witnessed its largest protest demonstration yet against the dictatorial regime of President Hosni Mubarak. M~re than a million Egyptian men and women, from students and doctors to the urban poor, rallied in Cairo's Tahrlr Squa.re agarnst Mubarak's 30-year rule. Effigies of Mubarak were hung in the Tahrir Square as the protesters rejected .
promrses of 'reform' to his authoritarian rule and demanded that he quit. .
. Fac~d by .these unprecedented protests on the streets. both Mubarak and the US government (for whom Mubarak's regrme rn an rmportant ally its agenda of maintaining dominance in the Middle East) have been forced to change their vocabulary. In a clear attempt to diffuse the protests, Hosni Mubarak yesterday claimed that he will ensure that 'free and fair' elections will be held in September this year -and he has also said that he will not stand for re-election in the September .
elections. .
However, it is clear that even now it is the US which continues to dictate terms to Hosni Mubarak. Barack Obama is now desperately trying to salvage his democratic credentials, and to hide the fact that for 30 long years the US government had politically, economically and militarily protected Mubarak's dictatorial regime. The US has therefore been talking of the need for a 'peaceful transition' of power in Egypt. As the pro-democracy protests gained momentum, Frank Wisner (former US Ambassador to India and Egypt) was sent to Cairo to instruct Mubarak to step down: a demand that was immediately followed by Mubarak's speech offering to step down in September I And right on cue, immediately after Mubarak's speech, Obama declared that an 'orderly transition' to a 'new regime' must begin. .
Mubarak's statement that he will stand down by the next election is just his way of trying to diffuse the tremendous momentum of the movement. and buy time for this discredited regime. The protestors in Egypt are not convinced by the US-Mubarak promise of a 'peaceful regime change' -they recognize that for Obama and Mubarak, 'regime change' essentially means that parts of the ruling system will be allowed to survive, at best the president and his closest associates will be forced to step down. Notably, in his speech offering to step down, Mubarak made no mention of his son. It is to be noted that one of the main demands of the protestors is that neither Mubarak nor his son should be in charge in Egypt any more. Clear1y, Mubarak is paving the way to derail the movement and install his son as President in the near Mure. .
.
Other important issues remain: though officially there is uuniversal suffrage in Egypt, only those who names are in the voters list are allowed to cast their vote. And, the only way of getting one's name enrolled in the voter lists In Egypt is through a set of officially recognized political parties! Therefore, all voters have to approach either Mubarak's party or the opposition Muslim Brotherhood in order to be allowed to vote. This provision-wherein political parties have been entrusted the job of maintaining the voter lists · effectively curtails the potential of political participation and universal suffrage. .
US Double Speak on 'Democracy' Exposed Once Again .
.
The recent developments in the Middle East and North Africa have exposed like never before the hypocrisy and double-speak of western governments, especially the US. If the remarkable demonstrations were taking place in the streets of Tehran. instead of Egypt or Tunisia, there would have been a prompt and unanimous response from the Western governments. demanding a regime change: instead. the US has suggested further 'democratic' reforms to quell the demonstrations! .
There is great reluctance by the US and other Western governments to label Mubarak as a dictator, primarily because he has done tremendous amount of work in stabilising the region In favour of Israel, afd keeping Hamas and the Islamic movements inside Egypt, at bay. Over the years, the US has supported severll unpopular dictators of Egypt1 Saudi and the other Gulf States; that is their reward for being subservient to American interests. All this serves as a reminder that US' imperialist interests and not principles of democracy dictate the US foreign policy in the region. .
What we are witnessing in north Africa and the Middle East is indeed an important Juncture in the struggle for democracy, and against imperialist domination. For the first time in recent history, the Arab masses in Tunisia, Egypt, Yemen, Jordan, and elsewhere have turned their anger towards the decadent regimes which were mere puppets of US' imperial interest in the region. There are indications that the US and other imperialist forces are trying to co-opt the opposition forces active in the movement. The regime change therefore must ensure that not just the puppet rulers like Mubarak and Ben All are ousted from power, but their political masters in the US, IMF and World Bank are also decisively rebuffed. The real battle at stake is tor these countries to ensure that their political and economic sovereignty is maintained, and protected against domination and manipulation by imperialist interests. Devastating nee-liberal policies, and the national missions of the IMF and the World Bank have to be kicked out: meaningful political change can only be ensured if the neoliberal economic policy agenda, and its domestic and foreign promoters are thrown out. .
