This flying suit was worn by Clarence "Dutch" Shankle during the 1920s-1930s. This one-piece leather flying suit was made by Air Associates Inc. for cold weather flying. They continued making this flight suit through World War II.

The Gaybe Lab, under the instruction of professor Gabe Moore, is focused on understanding the biological and sociological factors that relate to healthcare-associated infections.
"In our wet lab, we are cataloguing and characterizing microbes found on the Oberlin College campus, including the student health center," explains Moore. "Microbes were grown on a variety of different mediums and frozen for long term storage. From the microbe specimens we collected, we are able to isolate their genomic information in order to determine the species identity via sequencing. We then determine the pathogenicity, or the ability to cause disease, of these microbes by surveying case reports to see if these bacterial species are present in human infections. We hope to identify novel mechanisms of infection in microbes that infrequently cause disease before they become a problem in clinical settings."

Hair Ice, associated with the fungus Exidiopsis effusa in East Sussex England
Hair ice crystals form on rotting wood on humid winter nights, when the temperature drops below freezing. More amazing is the fact that these candy floss-like wisps are caused by the presence of a fungus, Exidiopsis effusa, within the rotting wood. It is thought the fungi prevents the small ice crystals from recrystallizing into larger ones, maintaining the distinctive hair-like shape
Associate Professor of Computer Science and Business Adam Eck and his Winter Term students Frank Kusi Appiah and Maike Anthony dos Santos Silva, both '28, place sensors in Oberlin College's Pollinator Garden.
"The goal is to explore how we can collect data from indoor plants and outdoor gardens (and possibly scaling to small farms) then utilize that data to automate the management of activities like plant watering schedules using artificial intelligence," explains Eck. "[We want to] visualize the data over time to help us understand the health of the plants and the effects of weather and micro-climates. This Winter Term is really just about starting towards that goal and exploring what is feasible in this space."
