The CCGS Samuel Risley is a Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker and buoy tender assigned to the Great Lakes area (Central and Arctic Region). As the lead ship of her class, the vessel is named after Samuel Risley, a 19th-century maritime inspector and the first head of the Board of Steamship Inspectors for Upper Canada and Ontario. Based in the Great Lakes, the CCGS Samuel Risley is tasked with maintaining an ice-free passage between Port Colborne, Ontario, and Thunder Bay, Ontario.
This past week, the Samuel Risley assisted an ice-bound freighter stuck near Buffalo, NY. The freighter was unable to break through the rapidly thickening ice caused by a cold snap that has plunged the Great Lakes into full-on winter mode.
A heartfelt thanks to our friends in the Canadian Coast Guard for their continued assistance!

Can Do Canines graduated 17 assistance teams at our facility in New Hope on Saturday, February 18, 2017. Clients received diplomas in recognition of graduating from Can Do Canines assistance dog program and the dogs received “doggie diplomas” (Nylabones). Various breeds of assistance dogs that graduated help people with a variety of disabilities such as diabetes, seizure response, hearing loss, mobility and autism.
The Graduation Ceremony represents the culmination of a long journey for the assistance dogs and their partners. Beginning with puppy raisers, either in the homes of volunteers or at one of four Minnesota prisons, the dogs are reared and taught basic obedience and early assistance dog skills. After 18 months, they’re returned to Can Do Canines for final training and to begin their new life with a person in need, free of charge.
Thank you to Anchor Bank for sponsoring our Winter Graduation and to Universe of 4 Photography for capturing our event!
